Season is almost over, winter is here, I need some reading suggestions. What have you read lately that you liked?

If you like vintage bowhunting books before the compound these two are a good choice.
Down page there is a thread started by Wudstix about Don Thomas' latest book. It's as good as any he had written. JMHO etc.
Silvertip, One with the Wilderness, any of the Wensel or E Donnall Thomas Jr books you haven't read.

Anything written by David Petersen.
If you fish, or just enjoy very good writing, I have all of John Gierach's books. Had to beat.

There's a start for sure.
X2 on David Petersen. And if you can find a copy, Hunting Alaska's Wild Rivers by Jay Massey is exceptional.
If you are a duck hunter, The Last Market Hunter by Dale Hamm is really good!
Imo best hunt book though not trad archery but awesome read is "Death in the Long Grass" by Capstick. Fantastic grab your attention read
I am reading Saxton Pope's book Adventurous Bowmen.
Not necessarily all trad, but all bowhunting and hands down my favorite bowhunting book is Barebow by Dennis Dunn. It's a big book, but once you start it it's very difficult to put down. I'm on the my 4th or 5th time through it right now.
Other similar books that I've really enjoyed (again not necessarily trad but good hunting story's with lots of diversity) are Super Slam by Chuck Adam's and Adventure Bowhunter by Tom Miranda.
Any of Gene and Barry's books are golden. Charlie's book is great also.
I also have a couple of Fred's books, outstanding as well.
I very much enjoyed Monty Browning's book
Oh, and heaven forgive, Roger Rothhaar's as well! If you want some real whitetail info!!!
If you're looking for some good humor, any of the books by Pat Macmanus.

I loved reading Pat's article and books!
Thanks for the suggestions. I have all of the Wensel books Rothaar books, Thomas books and more, but I did order some off this thread and a couple more from a vintage store. I have an ankle surgery coming up and will be laid up for 10 weeks.

Jay Massey's books are the best.
Bob Kirschner's two books are good reading. :campfire:
Another good book is BOWHUNTING'S WHITETAIL MASTERS: THE TECHNIQUES, SECRETS By Dan Bertalan.
Another interesting and good read is Kenny Morgan's "America, Wild Turkey and Mongrel Dogs" if you're into turkey both that and the "Death in the long grass book I'd mentioned are fantastic. The Capstick book btw is A NYT bestseller. Imagine how it's written that many people bought it
If you are looking for hunting and adventure. I would strongly suggest Bows on the Little Delta. It is my favorite.
If you're looking for some great books that will keep you glued to your seat check out CJ Box - Joe Pickett series. Not archery related though. Joe is a Game Warden in Wyoming (fiction) and involves some wild events. There are over twenty books in the series. I'm absolutely hooked. Any hunter would enjoy these!
Bernie
The Jim Corbett Man-eater Books.
G Fred Asbell's book Stalking and Still-Hunting: The Ground Hunters Bible
Fantastic hunting book, not archery, but a great book by a great author - The Heart of the Hunter by Edison Marshall. Can pick up used on Amazon etc. He would have made a great traditional bowhunter :)

If you like turkey hunting, any of Tom Kellys books
Murray
Best of Tradiional Archery by Gene Wensel. Also Trails End by Jim Doughtery. Both go to books when I have a bit of time.
You would enjoy Silvertip.Paul Schafer Bio.
I'm halfway through the book Return from Lynx Wilden and I can't put it down.
X2 what Terry said.
:campfire: :coffee: :archer2: :campfire:
Empire of the Summer Moon by S.C. Gwynne.
Crazy Horse and Custer or anything by Stephen Ambrose. His narrative histories read like epic adventure novels. D Day, Band of Brothers, etc. are all phenomenal books.
Anything by Cormic McCarthy if you enjoy a darker story.
Shadows On the Koyukuk, by Sidney Huntington. And Last Light Breaking by Nic Jans.
Anything by the late Jim Hamm from Texas. He has a number of books and including some with Tim Baker. Also the late Jim Daugherty from Oklahoma. Jim wrote for Peterson's Bowhunting, and a best of stories can be found in Trails Ending. Marv Clyncke from CO. finished his "Son of the Longbow" last year. Fred Anderson wrote "The Traditional Way" and "Toxicated: A Treasure of Archery's Golden Age". The late John Schulz wrote "Straight Shooting" about bows, hunting and what he learned from Howard Hill.
Since permits are available in ID and MT to hunt wolves, you might like Wolfer by Carter Niemeyer a trapper and adventurer from Ohio that moved to MT after graduating. Wolfer: A Memoir, is his story of capturing Canadian Wolves in Canada for a reintroduction program approved by Congress. It begins in early 1990's with Canadian Wolves that were much larger than the Timber Wolf, that was exterminated by ranchers and others. Read what happens when the Wolves don't follow the governments plan. IMO. Carter new more about the Wolves than the government, politicians and biologist. Paperback 2020.
I second the Jay Massey books recommendation. Good stuff!
Plenty of great suggestions!

Hi Dave!
Monte Browning's Bowhunting, A Passion for Life is great. Any of the Capstick books kept my attention, as well as any of G. Fred's.I like Massey as a writer. I had a book by Peterson on Elk hunting that was good as well. Gene Wensel is another writer I like.
For a novel-Shogun by Clavell. A great book. There is some bow and arrow stuff in there. (Ok very little) Whether or not it's believable is another discussion.
If you enjoy reading about fair chase elk hunting with traditional bows, Dave Petersen is the man. Many books, in particular; Elkheart, Going Trad, and A Man Made of Elk. He's an intelligent, brilliant author. :campfire:
One that may not be as well known is "Teachers in the Forest" the author is Barry Babcock. He is a long time traditional bowhunter from Minnesota. Here is a clip of the review that was done in Traditional Bowhunter Magazine when it came out.
"The teachings contained within this book belong to the author's decades afield as both hunter and self-provider and are also strongly influenced by his close ties to the Ojibwe people and their connection to the land and its animals." —Traditional Bowhunter Magazine
Ye Sylvan Archer. I bought a complete set from Glenn St. Charles at the old Northwest Archery. Richard
Try to find the series of hard cover books called the Legends of the Longbow. I think there are 29 books in each numbered series, by Glenn St Charles. This is a collection of archery history, hunting, instruction, and so on. These were published in the early '90s as a one every month or so, there were 1250 sets published.
Petersons Bowhunting Best of Trails End Book by Jim Dougherty.
