Briefly, it all started last spring when I received an email telling me I drew a once in a lifetime Colorado bull moose tag. After reading the email several times and confirming everything thing I could, it seemed true, 19 years of applying finally paid off. A few summer scouting trips and arriving early for the season opener and I still hadn't seen a moose. A little concerned, my buddy and I decided to try a new basin for opening morning. It was getting light as we reached the basin at about 11,000+ ft, right near timberline. In the morning light a bull moose antler stuck out like a sore thumb in the marshy willowy swampy beaver ponds in the bottom of the basin. I dropped my pack and began sneaking in. About 50yds into the stalk I noticed a second set of antlers near the first. Two bulls with good wind and good cover for sneaking in. I got within about 20-25 yds of the bulls and was not going to be able to get any closer. With an arrow nocked I waited for a shot. I had made up my mind that whichever bull gave me a shot I would take it. I waited and waited while the bulls fed hardly moving, thinking of everything that could go wrong. After a long 30 minutes one bull finally started moving. Finally getting a clear full body view of the beast for the first time and let me tell you they are a big beast. Somehow I managed to stay calm and focused. After another 5 minutes or so he finally turned broadside at 20 yds. I drew back and made a perfect shot. The bull was dead within 60-70 yds. A lifetime dream come true. My buddy Eric got to watch the whole thing and thankfully he got to help me deal with the beast and get it the mile and a half or so back to the truck. It was a long tough wonderful day.
