Title: wood arrows for my setup
Post by: socalmonster09 on August 09, 2023, 10:51:35 PM
I'm looking for new wood arrows for my setup, my draw about 25" bow
43.5 pd. Bow is Holm River Runner Static. I am thinking 5/16 30-35
or 35-40, I also can use 11/32 30-35 or 35-40, What would be the best
chose for my setup. a friend sold me some 5/16 35-40 27.5
3Rivers Firefly Wood Arrows for a good price, these were my first set of
arrows, I know I will have to buy arrows again, I bought some carbon 600
also for hunting but I'm looking for wood hunting arrow to. thanks

With your draw length of 25 and 43/45 pound bow and an arrow lets say that will be 26 to 27 inches long I think your in the ballpark with the 30/35 or 35/40 #s.You can vary the spine by how long you cut your shafts.Longer will weaken the spine and shorter will stiffin the spine. Also you can vary point weight.Lighter will stiffin spine and heavier will soften spine. You can get different glue on points when you order your arrows.Say from 100 to 175 grains and play around.Get some hot melt glue.

Thier are some other factors to consider.High performance bow or more normal performance. How the shelf is cut. Before center, center cut of past center.String type.Fast Flight string or B-50.

I would call an arrowsmith  or 2 who you might get the shafts from and get a recommendation from the info you give him or her.

You can use a heavier spined arrow but make it longer. For every inch over 28" subtract 5# of spine weight and heavier heads, 5# reduction for every 25gr of tip weight over 125gr. Wood shafts are spined for a finished 28" arrow with 125gr point.
How long are your arrows?

The arrows that I bought where 27.5 with 100 gr. pdp points 18 arrows for
$100.00 good deal, they were my friend wife arrows that's she not shooting
any more. they do fly good. I've broken two, loses one, and have to replace
tips on two, going to buy 100 gr points today. when I get good at 30 yard will
be going after hogs. so I need arrows for hunting hogs.

I find that I need to add spine weight for longer arrows with heavier heads.  i.e., for a 65#+ bow in the high performance category, with 28 1/2-29" arrows, 160-250 grain heads I would add 10-15# of spine.  Usually, I shoot tapered and footed shafts.  JMVHO  Currently, shooting a 66# D/R longbow, (21st Century clone) center shot, 90# spine parallel wood arrows at 28 1/2" and 235 grains up front that are flying very true.
