Tomorrow is "Opening Day" os NY's Southern Zone bow season!!! :archer:
As I'm retired, the blue jeans are washed and put away, and CAMO jeans are the "uniform of the day"
Tomorrow morning, I will be hunting behind the new house. I've never been able to literaly "walk out my door"
and hunt!! It's like Christmas Eve, and I'm so excited!!
We've gotten some nice bucks on camera.... Only a few are legal though, as we have a 3pts on one side antler restriction. We have a MONSTER 4pt that makes most 8pts look small, and another COOL 4pt that has long spikes, about 15" wide and 2 brow tines about 4-5" long! Unfortunetly, those boys are of limits... :readit:
However, There's a big 8 pointer, and a 6 pt that's almost as big... I'd be happy to tag either one!!
Does get a pass... They're "Buck Bait" for the rut...
GOOD LUCK, Brothers & Sisters!!!
Good luck brother.
Good hunting y'all!
The annual " Good luck NY BOWHUNTERS " thread used to have alot more activity on it but the last couple years many , some who I know are still hunting , have quit posting. I hope they will come back and chime in as I've always enjoyed sharing in their hunts. So far I've been out twice and had several doe with fawns come by and 1 spike walking below me. At least this year its way cooler early season. Good luck to all.
It is still early. Been out four times so far . I am sure things will pick up. Good luck and be safe.
So far..... I've seen more deer sittin' on the porch, than in the woods LMAO :dunno:
My brother lives a bit west of Syracuse. Always been a gun hunter. Never have been able to talk him into a bow even after giving him one.
We grew up in the Adirondacks but I left home day after highschool and ended up in Texas. At least he still hunts.
Fighting non Hodgkin's lymphoma this year so we'll see if he gets out there with his grandson.
Y'all post up your reports. Love seeing them
Well, I've been absent from the scene for a few years now. With other hobbies, family and work I was not shooting my traditional bows enough to feel confident in the field so I was not going out much.
My kids ended up buying me a wheel bow for Christmas which didn't require near as much practice time but in the end I have not hunted much with that either.
Once again I am slammed with work this time of year but I am going to try to find some time to get in the woods and hopefully connect on some venison. I'm down to one pack of steaks and a couple pounds of sausage so I need to make it happen!
Good luck Fellas!
Glad to see ya back, Ken!!! Sent ya a PM...
 :campfire:
Where in the Adirondacks, Gary??
Between Cranberry Lake and Newton Falls. Little Hamlet called Cook's Corner.
I know where that is!! Nice area!
Never hunted that far up... Fishing was great up there!!!
Hunted the Cedar River Flow, and the Moose River Plains. Everything between Indian Lake, and Old Forge.
Gun, Bullets, Knife, and a compass. Park the truck, and head off into the woods.... (I was young & dumb, LMAO)
Funny? Never figured you for a "woodchuck" :dunno:
Lol. I am an old backwoods boy. But there was no industry there and God had another plan so here I am.
Took this doe in Delaware county Saturday evening. Quartering away I ran my 2117 from in from of the liver to the opposite shoulder. She ran about 120/150 yards in a big circle and was dead in with in 10 seconds about 50 yards from my tree stand. [attachment=1,msg3013947]
There ya go Sean!!!
Nice work Sean. Congratulations
That's how you do it Sean; congratulations.
Shick
Atta Boy, Brother!!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS, Sean!!!
:clapper: :clapper: :archer: :clapper: :clapper:
Saw a nice 7 pointer this morning!!!
I was getting coffee, looking out the kitchen window....
He was up behind the pines, following the tree line behind the house... I hatched a plan!!
I'd sneak downstairs, grab my bow, go out the downstairs door...
I'd go across the driveway, into the woods behind the garage, sneak up inside the tree line,
and wait behind the chicken coup....
I peaked around the chicken coup.... He's still there!!
The wind is right, blowing right at me... I watch... and wait... and watch.... and wait.....
Then... He heads up into the woods?? :dunno: Oh well, the best layed plans... LMAO :banghead:
So, I go back inside and make breakfast. Hash & eggs, toast and coffee. :coffee:
After breakfast, I'm doing the dishes, look out the window..... There he is!! AGAIN!! So, I watched him...
God, I love it here!!! Life is Good!!! :archer:
Keep at it Chuck, you will get him!
Thanks for the opportunity to stop by today and for your gift to Sean. Hopefully he will get a chance to tag one with the Tigercat.
Let's go Delco!
It was my pleasure, Ken!!!
The way he was shooting... The deer are in trouble!!! :archer2:
Take care, Brother!!! Talk to ya soon!!
Been out most every day, for a few hours, mid-morning or so...
Mostly scouting, new area, getting the lay of the land...
So far, only Does, and "Spike"... He eats in our yard, and I've seen him about a dozen times in the woods.
I think he wants to be my friend?? :dunno:
This morning, the hound took me for a walk, and I found the first 2 fresh scrapes up behind the pines.
The first, was a real puzzler.... Under a spruce branch?? NEVER, in all my years, have I found a scrape under a pine tree. I have seen them rub cedars, and hemlocks, but never found a scape under one. Let alone, a spruce.
Definetly a scrape, with a "licking branch" shoulder high. That one, was a head scratcher....
The second one, was about 3ft diameter, fresh BARE earth, and a popular branch chewed and beat to hell!! :o
I've been tempted to pull the camera cards, but I'm gonna wait...
Little Bear likes to check them when he comes home for the weekend.
It's getting to be that time of year!!! :archer:
Did a 3 hour sit this morning, passed on two doe, I did see two bucks one close but wrong side of tree. Nice Redtail Hawk who was hunting squirrels was very close for a while. Cold but nice morning and action is picking up for sure.
Been out a few times the Covid kept me from the woods last week. Had a four point and six point sparring around the base of my tree Saturday morning. The six came back three times and sniffed my ladder but never detected me . Hopefully the big boys get moving in the light pretty soon , I have my eye on special one ...
Good Luck, Bob!!!!
Congrats Sean. Good luck fellas. Go get em chuck. The 3 pt rule is good but that tool should be used ocassionally and not as a permanent fixture.
Politics Charlie, that's all it is..... :readit:
From the 2022-23 Regulations Guide
"This program will continue as the DEC encourages hunters elsewhere to practice voluntary restraint.
Over time, as more and more hunters in the broader region opt to pass on young bucks voluntarily,
it may be appropriate to lift the restrictions."
Key words being "elsewhere" and "broader region"
When NY turns into a bunch of "Boxblind & Foodplot" deer hunters.... Things will change. :readit:
This whole QDM Big Buck mentality, is killing traditional deer hunting.... :help:
Shot this nice doe with my selfbow on October 14th. Osage orange bow, 64" ntn 46@28". Sitka spruce arrows.
Nice bow Rick, and good way to break it in.
Excellent!! Nice doe with the self bow.!!
Congratulations Rick; nice sized doe with any bow.
Shick
CONGRATULATIONS, Rick!!!!!
:clapper: :clapper: :archer: :clapper: :clapper:
Been out a number of times and had a few does and a couple of small bucks in close but no bigger bucks yet. I missed a mangy coyote the other day as he trotted by . They never seem to stop moving and only run faster when I try to stop them. I think its a later rut this year as I'm not seeing any cruising yet and the normal spots that get a scrape every year are not opened up yet. Last year by now I had scrapes everywhere and had a buck down and a lot more sightings. Good luck..
Give it another week Marvin....
Full Moon is Nov. 8th, and the woods should explode!! :archer:
Congratulations Rick. Nice work 🏹
Sitting on the porch tonight, having a beer after dinner....
Just before dark, I see a big Buck in the laneway, heading to the field. Too dark to tell, but I think it's the 7pt I saw before? I watched him feed in the field for a bit and I'm trying to sit as still as possible...
Then, he slowly walks across the field toward the pines. He stops at one of the openings leading into them...
He paws the ground... He puts his hind legs together and urinates on his hocks.
Then, he rubs his forehead and antlers on the branch above, and proceeds to lick and chew it.
I have just watched a big buck make a NEW scape, in my son's new yard!!! Under a Spruce tree!!
(I walked the hound this afternoon, there was no scrape there)
He walked through the pines and up to the tree line behind the house, where I think (It was getting pretty dark)
He made another scrape? I was about to slide forward in my chair to get a better look, when I caught movement in the corner of my left eye.... It was "Spike" and he was eating about 5 feet from the porch steps.
So... I just set still, and watched him.... He never knew I was there. Or didn't care?? :dunno:
God I LOVE it here!!!! :archer:
The hound took me for a walk this morning....
Found not 2, but 3 new scrapes that he made last night!!!
Getting to be that time.... :archer:
Sounds like you need to grab a couple sticks and get out in the woods Chuck!
Was able to connect on this 6 point this morning. Used the same Sitka spruce arrow that I used on the doe a couple of weeks ago. Sitka Spruce has been my favorite shaft material for quite a few years now! Good luck and stay safe everyone!
:clapper:
Way2go Rick!!!
Well done on both deer rick. Pretty bow too.
I hear ya chuck. We can go on and on about how awful the DEC is. I know how cool it is to see deer in the yard while driving king coffee/beer on the porch.
Keep after it.
CONGRATULATIONS, Rick!!!!!
:clapper: :clapper: :archer: :clapper: :clapper:
THE CHASE IS ON!!!!! :bigsmyl:
Had an 8pt chasing a doe around the yard this evening...
Where's all the buck pics ? Should be on by now. I've seen a bunch of sunrises in the tree stand but haven't made it happen yet. This morning I had a good buck come at a fast trot just as I got to the top of my climb. No arrow on no tab on rushed the shot and my top limb hit a branch. 3ft miss on a 17yd shot . Yesh. Don't know how many more small ones I can let walk with the clock running out.
Spike I shot on the 29th with a very special bow made for me by my 83 year old bowyer mentor and friend Marc Lauver of PA
Congratulations Gerald, well done!
Nice work Gerald . Happy for your success
CONGRATULATIONS, Gerald!!!!!
:clapper: :clapper: :archer: :clapper: :clapper:
A fine deer, Gerald. Congratulations.
Shick
Thanks men, not the biggest deer in the woods but the one who gave me the shot. I rarely let an adult deer go by.
Congrats longrifle! Marc's bows are awesome and he is a great guy!
Good job Ger . I lost a few days this week due to the death of my brother inIaw. Ron Kleiber was a well known wildlife artist and will be missed. Anyone interested in viewing his work can google him . I'll be hitting it the rest of this week and with the cool weather hope to see a pickup in buck activity. Good luck to all.
That'll work longrifle. He's gonna eat just fine
Congratulations Gerald ! The season is winding down quickly and starting to question the ones I let walk waiting for mr big ... to ad insult my wife let me know there's no more venison burger in the freezer
Hmmm???, Bob's got an empty freezer...?? :dunno:
Not like you Bob, better get after them brother!!! :archer:
I feel the same Bob. 10hrs in a cold stand the last 2 days has me regretting a couple of 6pts I've let walk. Had 2 small does and a spike at 15yds today but I want something a bit meatier.
