For those of you who have food plots. Is there a seed that you can seed over an existing field with??
My son's yard, is 7 acres and a mix of grass and clover. (LOTS of clover!!)
The upper end along the woods and around the pines, we leave knee high or so.
I was wondering if there was a seed that we could seed over it with,
to provide a "mix" without tilling it all up and completely reseeding.
Anything you try to overseed into a yard will be outcompeted by what is already there. Roundup followed by cereal rye would give you a quick plot but it won't look like a yard anymore. One option if you want to promote clover over grass in an area could be to spray with clethodim (that's a grass specific herbicide) and overseed more clover - after a season you'd have mostly or all clover and you could continue to mow it like a yard, just less often and not as short.
Summing up, trying to food plot onto an existing grass yard will be a waste of seed.

Thanks Ryan!!!
Actually, the deer are already in the field quite a bit.
Maybe we'll focus on getting the apple trees pruned up good...
I over seed my clover plots usually early in September. I use seed wheat and I mix in a bunch of turnip seed. I put my seed out before I mow, mowing puts a little thatch over the seed to cover it and help maintain moisture.
This has worked pretty good for me the last few years. The wheat grows all winter here and really takes off in the spring and helps keep the weeds down in the clover. The turkeys like it to. The turnips usually get hit hard late in the winter after they have been frozen..
Has anyone tried that "Throw & Grow" seed they advertise...??
Most of the Throw and Grow that I've looked at is mostly perennial rye grass, not rye grain. If you just got a small area you want to play around with it might be ok.
I bought a bag from Walmart(7 Card Stud) for less than $20 with clover, tritocale, oats, chicory, winter peas, beets and daikon radish. I had already sprayed Round-up the crabgrass in our old 1/4ac garden area then spread straw over it after seeding. We've had lots of rain lately and I got great germination.
Generally I keep Ladino and red clover and over-seed with seed rye each year. I sometimes add beets, radishes or turnips too by over-seeding.
