Title: My latest limbs and trials
Post by: Appalachian Hillbilly on August 03, 2022, 11:53:58 AM
Trying to refine my limb design for a 60" bow. Getting close. First one is black glass, action boo and maple back(I flipped them wrong in form) and straight taper canary wood wedge at 10" long with 3.5" tip wedges. Taper starts 8" from limb butt to 1/2" at tips. 7 3/4" brace height

Draw force curve"
27" 37.2
28" 39.6
29" 42.1
30" 45.2

With 10 gpp this bow was 168-171 . Shooting fingers with Mark on arrow. Not exact I know, but all I got right now.

Iimb #2 is 10.5" Wenge wedge, taper starts at 6". Stack was 250 thou using 50 thou clear glass, canary wood with actionboo core.
7 1/4" brace height.

Draw force curve:
27" 46 lbs
28" 49 lbs
29" 52 lbs
30" 56 lbs

Stacked in that last inch. This bow with a 500 is grain arrow was 172-175 fps. With a 450 grain it went to 178-179. Never saw 180 on the fingers.

Would have loved to hit 180, it might if I removed the yarn puffs but this is how I will shoot it. X99 string with 2 decent sized puffs.

Both bows were tillered even, shot with X99 string, 2 yarn puffs and off the fingers.

My natural draw to anchor is around 27.5"

Would like to refine these designs a little more to get 180 at 10 gpp but both of these limbs are shooting very well. May hunt with the heavier set this fall.

You don't need .050 glass, I believe it stacks quicker.

Nice work :bigsmyl:

Yea, the other set of limbs I made that had more of a "hinge" were 40 thou....and faster.

I got to order more 40. All I got left is 50. Enough 50 left for 4 more bows....

You could run it threw the thickness sander down to .040 if you sander is consistent in thickness

Duuhhh, I should have thought of that. I did run some clear through once that someone gave me because it was wavy. Worked good!

Looks like I need to start on another set of limbs!

If you happen to use the same stack but diff thickness glass, please let us know how the weight comes in?

Thanks!

Will do. Kind of curious about that my self. Will probably do the heavier stack. The 40 lb bow above was 140 thou wood, 100 glass. The 49 lb was 150 thou wood and 100 glass but a half inch longer wedge.

Did some more testing this evening with a new X99 string and no puffs. I am not sure what the string is I was using. I thought it was and old one I had made, but I believe it may be a B55 string. The 49lb limbs were in the mid 180's with 450 grain arrow. A few shots were 187 and 188. Going to add more weight to get to 10GPP. If it hits 180, I will be happy with this design.

Learn and use your decimals  ;) you have the rest going good.
FYI
.050 glass
.140 wood
.001 taper
.002 taper
.003 taper
