Title: Flip Pallot on shooting a bow
Post by: mj seratt on July 10, 2022, 09:32:32 AM
I found a you tube video of Flip Pallot showing his friend how to shoot a stickbow.  Check it out if you want to.

I watched that video the other night on Flip Pallot Outdoors. For some reason this quote really struck me:
"The center of an Aspirin is the same size as the center of a barn door."

Excellent YouTube

Just a couple of weeks ago I talked to a guy who had been shooting for a year but was making no progress. 55# Robertson longbow with a few Carbons.
I told him to be at my house 10:20am Tuesday July 5.
Sometimes it is that busy around here; he showed up on time and I had a target, some arrows, couple a bows, and cold lemonade ready.

Watched him shoot a few arrows.
It was a freakin full blown disaster!! I don't know how anybody could shoot for a year and make so little progress? Young guy 34 with access to YouTube, Tradgang, etc.

I was thinking maybe he can't do it? I don't know. Maybe not everyone can? And almost out of frustration I did that exact same demo holding an arrow pointed at his eye - my retina looking into his. (Even though I discussed this with him a year ago along with the suggested 'read Fred Asbells book and watch old film of Fred Bear shooting)

Then I shot 3 quick arrows - they laid into the target perfectly. A group of 3 from 15 yards and you could put your thumb and index finger around them. When he saw that he looked like he was gonna puke.

He gets ready to shoot while I'm almost shouting the reminders of the shot sequence, where to anchor, and where to point!!! His arrow flies PERFECT! At 15 yards he has now for the first time in his life purposely done what he said he has always wanted to do.
He did it again- perfectly
Then again
And again
An epiphany
And a new enthusiasm

All week at work he has really been energized and more confident.
He thinks he will be ready for deer season!

Anyway long winded but teaching a new shooter about the importance of the retina and lining things up to it are fundamental and cannot be overstated.

Shark skin on that Osage bow is brilliant!!

Yes, Flip's show was one of the best. Great stuff about what it's really about.  :campfire:

The link between fly fishing and traditional bowhunting is pretty strong.  Similar influences tend to attract people to each of these pursuits.  I've had the good pleasure to meet Flip two or three times at TBOF events and he seems like a solid guy.  Even if he is friends with Don Davis.    :biglaugh:
