Title: Jet 2244 plus drum sander
Post by: Appalachian Hillbilly on June 28, 2022, 08:39:44 PM
I picked up a Jet 2244 Plus drum Sander with the cabinet stand that has not hardly been used.

Anyone got one of these and how do you like it?

I've heard a lot of folks that have the 16/32 that love them. I haven't had one but would sure snag one if the price was right...

Prolly be great for stuff that wide.
Never used an open end sander but hear they flex some. Might not be a big deal for cabinet stuff but for lamps I prefer a bearing on each end of the drum. And they say a wide belt is better than drum but can't afford that.

He said it has only had about 20 board feet ran through it and it looks new. New one with the cabinet is 2700. I got it for 1100.

I will also use it for cabinet making as well.

Seems like Kirk made a bracket on the open end to lock it and prevent any play.  Maybe he will check in...

I thought those open end sanders had an adjustment to keep the drum parallel to the table?

I had a Grizzly widebelt that was open end, it had an adjustment but also a cast iron frame so never needed to adjust and it stayed pretty equal side to side.

I used it today to sand a riser after gluing it together and to rough in some lams.

Man! Made it so easy! Should have done this a long time ago. Really spread up the process  a lot.

I have the small Grizzly. It comes with a fixture to lock the open end, but I don't use it. The sander's frame is heavy cast iron and if it flexes at all, I can't tell.
I use it for lams, but I also build furniture, so I like that it can take larger pieces.
Dave.

Still have a Jet 16x33 and have hundreds of lams run through it- Like crooked said it flexes so I constantly have to adjust it to make sure my lams are uniform. Just got a grizzly baby drum thats closed ended but haven`t set it up yet-

I have the little Jet 10-20 drum sander.  No problem with flex after i added a support strap on the open end.  Has worked great for me.  I would probably upgrade to the 16 32 if this ones craters.

Did you check the thickness from side to side??

No, basically used it to hog the la.s down to size for my thickness sander. Got to change the drum paper tonight.  I loaded it up on some Bloodwood from a riser when I got in a hurry.
That stuff is oily and turns to rock hard deposits if you rush it.

I think a new sand paper does better for oily woods.
I use new sand paper to grind Bocote and it does a lot better.

I have a 16 x32 I have had for about 25 years and it gets used about every day, with a little practice you can get very accurate with it I can get my lams to a thousandth of an inch . You cant adjust the drum to make it even I've tried many times but it just wont get exact but it does get close just keep flipping the lams .

What are you using for a thickness sander?

I would strongly recommend building a side mount bracket you can tighten down to keep it from flexing. both my 10/20 and the 16/32 i've had for about 8-9 years have /had the lock down bracket. I just used a couple pieces of flat metal to make mine and tapped one for a knob to tighten it.

These are great sanders.

here are some photos of mine.   Kirk

BTW..... i think you can buy one of these at Grizzly tools and adapt it to yours rather than fabricate one.

Does it have Velcro or glue the sand paper to the drum?

The 10/20 and the 16/32 Plus Jet has a spring clip on each side of the drum. Insert into one side, wrap it tight, then plug the other end into the spring clip. Smooth drum, no velcro.     Kirk

I changed the paper in just a minute or so. The sprung clips make it so nice!

I love being able to rough in a whole set of lams at one time! I did a set for experiment 2.0last night and got one lam glued up.

Kirk, thanks for the pics. That is simple enough!

If I was looking for a new sander and was spending nearly $3000., I don't think I would be happy about having to modify the machine to make it function properly, no matter how simple the fix.

I got it for literally a 3rd of that! Plus I wanted the open end for cabinet doors.

You did it right Hillbilly    I just wonder how many people get home with their new machines and find out
its not all that and a bag of chips.

I just can't justify the cost of the high end double sided large machines for my hobby.  Even the cost of one of these new is steep. This is the first one I have saw come up for sale used in a year.

A lot of time, hobby machines leave something to be desired and you have to find a work around. Lam grinders are a specialized item and no one makes a ready to go setup .

Most items are not going to care if one side is a few thou thicker than the other.

I will do add a DRO to this just for faster reference,  but not for the "gospel " finish measurements.

I do understand the bag of chips...My large Laguna bandsaw is awesome...except for the dust removal portion.

I bought my (Grizzly)Baby drum sander years back and ripped off the hook and loop on the drum and I glue on my sand paper. I would sand my riser blanks to thickness and found out they had a dome in the middle, that did not work well on the pattern sander.

I bought my 6" x 80" edge sander a few years later and modified the table and table brackets to my liking.
Todays "Hobby" machines are  made cheep and need some modifications.
Back in the day machines were made with cast iron and machined flat and square.

There is angle iron under the table where all the carriage bolts are.

And turn buckles to keep the table square to the platen.

Now I can square 2 or 4 sides of a riser block before I get started.
I was a Tool and Die and Machinist  for 28 years back in the day so I can't leave things alone.

You can still buy Cast Iron wood working machines today for big $$

Wow, you really did beef up that table
That must be nice when you have to lean into the work.
