Title: What do you grill/smoke on
Post by: STICKBENDER98 on March 24, 2022, 07:29:05 PM
Since Miss Carmen started the butt in #2 thread about Shiftys Seasoning it got me to thinking, what do you all use to do your outdoor cooking?  My go to has always been a Charbroil charcoal grill with a side smoker box, until last year.  My wife and daughters went in together and got me a Pitboss pellet grill/smoker.

Lets see your cookers.

This is my other favorite, my Dad did the fire ring, and made the roll over grill, and the hook for hanging cast iron pots.  I have done everything from burgers and steaks to cornbread on the grill, and have made pots of chili and bean soup in the cast iron pots. Not to mention the countless hours just watching the flames.

I guess I'm a bit old school as I love a Weber grill and have two Smokey Mountain Weber's (18" Charcoal)) for big smoke jobs.

I got into smoking meats rather late in life but it's become a passion. You can't beat a savory smoked pork shoulder for value and a premium beef brisket for flavor.

What ever is available. In this case a big treble hook and some 25 pound braid. Worked like a charm! It's surprising how hot those sunflower heaters get. You just have to flip the dogs after a while or they get burnt on one end and cold on the other!

Weber kettle. The cheap ones from WalMart. I would truly love something a little higher end but for now the Weber is still holding on and when I bought it we were living on love in college. One day it will become a lifetime item for me but I'm not a believer of fixing things that aren't broken yet.

Ate off a Traeger in Antelope camp in WY back years ago... came home and sold my green egg for a Traeger.

Wish I had another green egg to sell.  :goldtooth:

Yeah you can try it, I don't think the CO's would appreciate that too much though lol.
Quite often we see big schools of herring swim through the hole, and you can legally spear those so I would think you could bowfish them too. It's crossed my mind a time or two.

I grill and smoke on an offset barrel unit given to me by my ascended friend's wife, it is called "The Denza" in his honor.  Lump and hardwood for the perfect heat and flavor.

This one is interesting. For many years, grilling, smoking, etc. did not draw my attention due to my Alpha Gal issue. I just haven't eaten meat in a long time. HOWEVER, I just got back the results from my updated Alpha Gal test. Now on venison, lamb, and pork, I tested negative. Beef still registered on the lowest level of sensitivity that can still be classed a positive reaction. This means that this and the Recipe thread are once again relative to me. I have sampled a little pork so far with no problem. Things are looking up.

Currently, I have an old no-name grill, but I am developing interest in the Traeger. I have a couple of friends who really like theirs. Are there any drawbacks to this item? I guess I need to order up some of the seasonings being discussed in another thread.

Pit boss pellet grill for smoking and slow cooking. Breeo fire pit with a homemade grill grate , love being able to cook over the fire pit . Also have a homemade pot hanger that I can hang pots on for soups, stews or chili.

Kamado Joe ( like a big green egg ) for all my outdoor cooking. Can't beat a reverse seared venison back strap finished in screaming hot cast iron pan. Love the versatility  of it, making pizza at 700 degrees to slow cooking a brisket at 225 degrees for 15 hours just blows my mind. Takes some getting use to and not for the set it and forget kind of person. I cook all year long with it since it is so insulated.

I'm not sure what set it and forget it means, but I run a Traeger.

I got an Outdoor Gourmet pellet grill/smoker and a Char broiler charcoal grill.  Stainless steel gas grill hasn't been used since I retired.

Wolf, that is the same Char Grill I have been using up until last year when I got my Pit Boss.  I added the side fire box to my Char Grill, I used charcoal and hickory chunks in it.
