Title: Hunters Lingo
Post by: Terry Green on February 16, 2022, 06:36:13 PM
This should be fun....

"Loppers" = pruning shears as per Steve M.

Got any other slang phrases you've learned over the years?

DINK

When a buddy gets a nice buck, us guys all say it's a dink, meaning little buck:)

Even if it's a really big buck, we call it a dink:)

Horns vs antlers.  I think we all know the difference between horns and antlers, but don't be surprised to hear hunters calling antlers "horns."  (I've never heard anyone calling horns "antlers"). I think this is something hunters do on purpose, like when we were in the Marines and we called all Navy ships "boats" just to pi$$ the sailors off.  Is this just something that happens in California, or do hunters all over the country call antlers "horns"?

Bird dogging.

The act of wading through unholy briar thickets for my dad and his buddies when we were kids hunting rabbits or pheasant. It was a right of passage me and all my friends went through. Those were bloody and fun days!

Getting flagged.

The view of a whitetail tail or several waving to you after you kicked them out of their beds. Getting flagged was a bummer if you were still or sneak hunting but OK if you were bird dogging for a deer drive LOL.

That sure is a big bodied buck. "MN nice" for a buck with a small  rack.
Swamp Donkey- I know what they are saying, but I'd never use the term.

One I do not like is: run-n-gun. Aggressively going after elk with a bugle and bow

Back in Maine a small buck was sometimes a "little dubber" or dubber.

I've heard all of these. Never said any of them myself out of a sense of self-respect.

"Coal Hearth" vehicle sized flat spot found all over the mountains in central Pa. I'm sure they had something to do with logging on mining limestone but that's what I was taught to call them. They typically have scrapes on them...

Rocking chair head -a buck they had antlers akin to a rocking chair on top of his head

Chop stick head - spike

Key chains -mythical 5 year old or older buck with less than 3 inches of antlers on each side.

Patrick effin Kelly- legendary hog hunter know for the amount of hog death left in his wake

Lucky penny- penny that is found during the hunt that if blames for success of the hunt

Pawldcast- the best of the best bowhunters have a platform called pawldcast where they can create their own echo chambers for what makes a great Bowhunter (not to be confused with podcasts)

Ashby haters-typically pawldcast hosts who make up studies that are designed to create a narrative to detract from the Ashby Studies but in reality are useless random andectotal information that more than not actually validates the Ashby Study

Jansport-a hunting back pack thet does not cost $800-1000 to carry 400 feet to the deer stand.

Michigan 11 point - spike buck
Were they bald or balled? - my question whenever someone tells me they saw a deer
Way back in the Gankas and Gudus (probably spelled that wrong) - term I heard from an old timer up here at school. Means to go way back into what I would call the boondocks. Not entirely sure what those terms mean, all I know is that you go over the gankas and you go through the gudus haha

Cutlery - Knife
"Where's your Cutlery?"

Cloth Ear'd Doe - Big old long nose doe
"Only saw a couple of Cloth Ear'd does"

Cashews - Refering to an immature male deer, i.e small testicals
"He only had Cashews"

You're right Terry, good fun thread.

The longer a deer lays on the ground after you shot it, the smaller it gets before recovery.

sit---Period of time spent in a stand or blind.  "I didn't see anything on the first sit, but the second was something special."

covered up--surrounded by game that is often not what you are after.  "I couldn't get out of the dang tree because I was covered up with does."

tater diggers-drop tines-an antler point that grows down from the main beam as opposed to up.  "That buck he killed had a tater digger on his right antler that was nine inches long!"

Management Buck-A buck that you wanted to kill, but were worried that your so called "buddies" would mock you about so you created a reason to do so based on dubious rationale loosely linked to genetics and herd potential.  "I know it's small, but I had to kill it because there is a black mark on the left eyebrow that I don't want spreading through the herd."

For the record, I absolutely hate the term "dink".  I much prefer, something less derogatory like "little 'un" "young feller" or "youngster".

Basket Rack - a younger,  usually not mature buck that has a nice looking rack,  but 1/3 scale......he's not ready yet,  still inside the ears and thin bones.   Most times he's a small 6 point it seems.

Shin Tangles, pretty much anything with thorns that wants to hook into and not let go, or will get wrapped up around your ankles and feet and try to trip you.

Hoss = OMG buck!!!  We had one beast in IN that me and another fellow hunted for six years until he "evaporated" nicknamed him "Bullwinkle".  Good solid 8x8 or better amazingly typical and 23"+ spread.  Creek bottom were he spent much of his time flooded at least once a year and we never found a shed.

In a similar vein, we used to call it" letting the sunlight in."

If you let the sunlight in, they die, the more sunlight you let in the quicker they seem to die.

Elmer Fuddin' around - term referring to someone not really having any idea what they're doing and messing up everyone else's hunting. Very common here on opening day of rifle season on public land.

Grey Beard, an old buck that is grey in the muzzle
Stump Sitter, someone who sits in the same spot day after day
Post, where a Stump Sitter goes to sit
Highway, a clearly defined, well used deer trail
Drive, when several hunters try to push deer towards other hunters who have posted further away.
Raisinettes or goobers, deer droppings used to trick unknowing, nubile hunters.  Not nice, but very funny.

Only funny cuz it's true. I hate this term along with cull deer. These terms should be left for game farms because one guy sitting in the woods outside of high fence will not impact the herd by culling a healthy deer. Nor are they changing the genetic pool.

"Damn Bastard" The Buck that shows up as you are getting ready to draw on a doe, snorts and chases her away from you
"Nosy Bastard" The Buck that circles around you and sits there watching you without you knowing it and snorts while all you can do is watch
"Surprise" The buck that was bedded down 10 yards away from me with a huge wide Oak separating us, neither of us knew we were that close until I stood up to head back to the car
