I'm out of my normal finish and only need enough for 2 bows. I have some EA-40 spare and thought about trying it mixed with acetone.
Have any of you tried it as a bow finish and if so what did you think of it? Durability, ease of application, looks etc
Also what ratio of epoxy to acetone?
How thick do you want it for application?
How long does it take to dry?
2 - 3 coats enough?

As a general rule, you are not supposed to thin epoxy...

This would be the equivalent of the "Massie" finish that Jay Massie popularized as a weather protective finish for self bows. His formula used Dev Con epoxy (slow cure) and either acetone or denatured alcohol mixed.
I used it once quite a few years ago on a board bow. It made a good finish. Definitely out lasted the bow :) It was applied by wipe on. It was said to NOT wipe the surface more than once when applying. That turned out to be correct!! It becomes sticky immediately upon application and a second wipe creates a roughish finish. Still tough and serviceable but not really a "finish" in the usual sense.

I don't know how it might work with smooth on.

.84 oz. to 1/3 cup of Acetone, spray on
You need two .84 oz. to 2/3 cup to get around 6/7 coats, but is gloss
Max, have you ever tried using denatured alcohol as opposed to acetone? Somewhere in the back of my mind I think I used the alcohol. I could never find the dev con and simply used whatever was available.

I would try the part A? (white) with thinner because it thicker and if it thins I would add the other part B (Amber) and spray a test piece
This stuff here thinned may work also.

I've known several bowyers that have thinned EA-40 with acetone for a grain filler, but it's really hard to sand once it's dried. They just brushed it on though.... I couldn't imagine running that combo through a spray gun successfully, or actuall6 finishing a bow with it.....
Those model plane hobby stores sell an epoxy finish formula that is packaged as the stuff Stic showed above. Most of these shops have it packaged under their own name.
