Title: Red Wing Hunter question
Post by: kekorn on January 14, 2022, 03:39:02 PM
Hope this is the right place to post.  I have an opportunity to purchase a Wing Red Wing Hunter.  Based on my research it is one from the Wing Archery started by Bob Lee.  That said, I can't find any information on the specific serial number or logo.  I have attached a picture of the logo and serial number and would be most appreciative of any information I can get.  This would be my first recurve and want to make sure I'm getting a bow that will serve me well.  Thanks in advance.

Based on the serial number, it might have been made in 1966, although Wing serial numbers did not follow any definite pattern.  The bow was probably made before the introduction of fast flight string, so you should use B-50 or B-55 string on it.  You may want to ask what string is on there now.  If they say it is fast flight (anything other than B-50 or B-55), that might be a good reason not to buy the bow, as fast flight string puts undue stress on the limb tips of bows that were not designed for it.  There is nothing wrong with string that isn't fast flight, it's just that fast flight is 4-5 fps faster.  In fact, some people prefer to use the older strings for various reasons.

Wings were good bows.  I have never owned one, but I like Bob Lee bows.  The ones I own now are my favorite recurves.

I am no expert, but I believe that is a bow from later in the Wing archery timeline.  Probably from the 1990's.

If it was made in the '90's, it may well be fast flight compatible, although many bows made in the '90's weren't, and even some made today aren't.

The Wing name was sold to Dr Bob's Archery Co in I believe the 1980's.
I think the bow is a production bow marketed by that company.
Again I am not an expert so I may be incorrect.

You may wish to PM Medicae Bhtr...he had a Wing franchise during the time frame suggested.

That bow was made in Korea and by the company who bought the Wing Archery name at the bankruptcy auction. This is the only time the Red Wing was a takedown.

Thanks, Kelly!  Do you have any idea what year that was approximately?  Thanks again!
