Got the center section glued up last night. Got it layered into day with some maple and rosewood stripes. Center is Morado flanked with Blood Wood and curly maple. In the oven right now.
Looks pretty neat.
Hard to see in this pic but the bloodwood is almost translucent.
Cool 👍

Looks good
Going to get it sanded today and figure out what kind of limbs I want to go with. Longbow, recurve or ILF. Then I got to make some jigs to cut limb pads.
Niiiice.... First riser and you are getting all Fancy Shmancy on us...
:goldtooth: the ideas of endless riser designs and possibilities keep me up at night...
Especially the one with the embedded draw length sensor inside a riser I beam. Small led come on and shines through a opaque epoxy window in the belly of the riser....
LOL
Wow! Very nice.
Dave.
Got it sanded. Now to layout. This is the riser I will copy. It is an OMP Sektor ILF. This is one of the most natural aiming bows I have . Grip angle is perfect. I put my angle gage on the limb pads and it is the exact same as a custom longbow takedown that I have and it shoots extremely well also.
Looking good
Gonna throw an idea at you... Instead of cutting the riser out you may want to wait... Make your limbs and bolt them to a mock up riser made out of a 2x4... You don't need to sculpt the grip, just make the libs pads the angle you want and see how them limbs are bending... If you don't like how the limbs are bending change the pad angle until you get what you like... Then finish the real riser... Put some keepers on the sides of that mock up riser... You don't want the limbs scissoring on you...
Endless riser possibilities could keep anyone up at night
Shredd, that's a good idea. That will also help ensure I have the limb pad machining/drilling technique figures out.
This will be an ILF riser. I have a piece of nice solid ash I can cut to the same dimensions as this riser. That way the mock up and trial run will be the same.
That looks pretty neat. Kinda like those three pieces are floating.
I thought ILFs all had the same pad angle ?
So different limbs could be used and the weight was known before hand by riser length.
The limb pads on the OMP Sektor measured 14.8 degrees. I need to measure my longer 25 inch Olympic style riserpad angles. I have heard of differences in the different length risers and some between manufactures as well.
I have a set of medium 30# limbs rated at 30 on a 25" riser. On this 17" OMP they draw 38#

Nah, they are all over the place. I've measured a number of target risers from pictures and the angles vary as do the position of grips fore/aft. The weight rating on limbs is really more a guide and then you fine tune with the limb mounting bolts to get whatever weight you want. The weight rating will only be accurate for one riser length as well.
AH, that riser block is looking really nice.

My bits came in for the riser cuts. Now just need to drill and tap some 1/2" stainless bolts to center for the limb bolts.
Ready to do some contouring tomorrow a d cut the shelf.
Looks like you did it
Is the string tracking good?

Mad max, it is adjustable. I put in the side to side adjusting screws in the detent dovetail.
All work was done from same side of riser on my milling machine.
Looking good!!
I made exactly one ILF riser with a tablesaw, router , and various other tools, but no mill!! Last one for me!! :biglaugh:
I got about 3 hours in the machining and setup. Half that is figuring out how and setup!
Looking good there, mr. Fancy Pants... :)
I got lots of Fancy ideas! :biglaugh:
We'll see how well I can execute them.
Handle overlays, quiver bolt inserts...
I want to do everything I can think of on this first riser and use 1 riser as the learning platform.
I found some fancy mosaic knife scale pins with deer, boar and all kinds of other designs I can incorporate..

I used a heavy rubber line and a ton of clamps to get the overlays on. It worked!
Used EA40. Got some more shaping to do, but it shoots!
Now got to decide what finish to put in it. Sanded to 400
Looks good from here.
Man that looks great! I am hoping to start on my second bow after Christmas and wanting to dry something a little fancier this time too! Thanks for the inspiration.
Very nice work!
That is sharp...
Looks super!!
Next up is to make some take down limbs. Need to get a thickness sander.

Are you going to make ILF limbs?

I am thinking about it. I know I will be making a standard 3 piece longbow. I have those ILF measurement drawings stashed away.
Got to work out the wedge details for ILF. Probably use G10 for the wedge to get the strength. Could prove to be time consuming, but would love to make some custom wood overlay ILF limbs. Not many people doing them at all.
I believe Greg Coffee might make some.
I want to make some normal limbs first to get the experience of laying up and making a set.
I am getting a Byrnes Thickness Sander after the new Years. He is not taking orders until Jan 1st.
I need a way to make the lams the same consistently.
I got the dark lambs in the riser a few thousand off and you do not notice it until you make a long diagonal cut across them, like on the limb pads.
Looks great Hillbilly
It looks like the limbs don't sit flush on the pads? I know I missed something there?
ILF limbs have a pivot point at the end of the riser and the bolts can change the tiller
Like a compound bow
Riser looks great hillbilly. Nice work
Really looks nice! btw, I bought one of Byrne's thickness sanders this fall to replace my homemade thickness sander, and while it is better engineered than I could have done, imo it needs more fine tuning. The platen comes as dead soft aluminum, which he advises you to wax before use. Ipe scratched the platen right through the wax, so I had to take it apart and flat sand it, then I decided to send it out to get it anodized to provide wear resistance. The rest of the housing is anodized black, why did he stop there, at the area that will see the most friction???? If you talk to him before ordering, maybe he would consider providing that, so you don't have to. I also put an extension on the out feed, without more support out the back I got some horrible snipe on lams. I also replaced the front cover with a piece of Lexan, so I can see better what's going on as I feed. Other than that, I really like it, it is quiet, and the dust collection works well. I have limited room, so this bench top machine beats a full size drum sander for my use.
IlF only touch at the end of the riser and the head of the bolt. The dovetail detent pin only locates it side to side and the dovetail is adjustable. I will get you some closeup pics.
Knuklhead , thanks for the tips! I figured it would need more work, but for the money, looks to be the best option out there. I really do not have time to make my own.
Micro Mark is the only other one I know of. I planned on modifying the table on the byrnes anyway.
Anyone else know of a ready to go thickness sander that will work or be easy to mod?
More pics of your mod to the outfeed please?
Sure, happy to share them. The out feed is 6061 scrap I had in the bin, 3" x 11 1/4", and I used some steel channel underneath with some shims to keep it as level as possible. I only needed the one side, wide enough for lams, and keeps the height adjustment knob visible. I see it is getting scratched up already, too, even though I waxed it. Probably not as important as the platen itself. (Can be replaced easier, too.) And, I also looked hard at the Micro Mark, but was wanting more thickness capacity than 1/2". Other than that, it looks like a decent machine, and has a pressure roller which I wish the Byrnes had.
Thanks for the pics Knuklhead!
I got to shoot it today. Had to make a slight tiller adjustment to my pads. I want it even tillered with the tiller bolts bottomed out.
Had to reduce the grip some and slightly change the shape in the palm area.
Sanded it to 400 and got a coat of Tung out on it.
I absolutely love maple. So many types of maple to play with. Got a bunch of ambrosia and more curly as well.
Got 4 coats of clear on it today. Really liking how this turned out. The bloodwood is incredible! My next one.maybe be Bloodwood with maple inserts.
Looking good!
Dave.
Very nice.
