Title: Cresting aluminum shafts with no cap dip or wrap???
Post by: J. Cook on December 06, 2021, 04:01:17 PM
I'm looking to add some cresting to some aluminum shafts but without a cap dip, spray cap, or wrap.  I want to add cresting directly to the aluminum shaft.  Do any of you do this, if so what paints and methods have worked for you?

I tried the search function and found mountains of info on cresting over a cap dip or spray cap paint - not what I'm looking for.

Thanks for your feedback!

Yes, I've done that many times in the past. Always used Testors Enamel hobby/model paint. Might need some extra coats with certain colors.

I did that back when I couldn't cap dip. I used Bohning paints because that was what was recommended by guys doing it for a living. I did prep my shafts the old fashion way, i scrubbed them with Comet cleanser and hot water. But I did that anyway for fletching them. I still have the pamphlet from Doug Kittridge archery, 1972, on making arrows. You could probably just use Acetone as well. My cresting machine I made from an old copy machine motor. Miss those days, had no money but lots of fun.
