Well, my long awaited Iowa trip has come and gone but won't be forgotten.
My buddy Preacher and I had been putting in for 4 years and decided that this would be the year. Many deer were seen. I few younger deer were allowed their pass, but in the end, I was able to take a nice 10 point and a doe. Preacher enjoyed sightings of some very nice deer and even enjoyed having a good 8pt at under 15 yards from the ground and a basket at a mere feet. Preacher came home with some fine memories, but left all the deer in Iowa.
Nice work Jim glad you got to get out 👍
Nice buck! Congrats! Were you hunting public or private? I have two points and am thinking about a zone where I have a friend that owns a farm but also has some decent public ground nearby. My buddies farm is all in CRP so it is decent pheasant hunting but not much timber ground for deer.
Nice one Jim!
We hunted a small private place in NE Iowa. I know it wasn't the famed SE, but we did see some good bucks there.
Really beautiful country with lots of ag... very very hilly and not what I had expected.

Good job Big Jim! Always a good trip when you go with a good friend!
Congrats Jim. Yes, Your beard makes your buck look small. Lol.
Seriously though, congrats on both deer. Time to play catchup in the shop or maybe teach some pigs that nothing in life is free.
Fine buck Jim. Congratulations!

Way to go big guy.
You deserved a good hunt.

JusPassin, I was prepared... or so I thought to hold off for something bigger. I had passed on two nice mid 130's bucks at 15 yards the first night.. an 8 and a 10. I had a bunch of time to look at them before I passed.
At about 8 am, I looked around hard and saw nothing so I decided to put my coat on.. take off armguard, put on coat... crap, here came a single adult doe on a mission.
I didn't plan on shooting her at that time, but didn't think about a buck being right behind her. When I tried to finish getting ready to shoot, this buck pops up and already in range!
I had to get my cloths right first and he was moving quickly. I judged him without my bino's and dead he was! 30 minutes go by and here comes an 8 point, way outside his ears and following the same trail.. He was a good bit bigger than what I had shot. It didn't matter what he was as I had spent my only tag. He was fun to watch even when he jumped from snuffling the arrow I had shot my buck with.
Very happy with my buck. BigJim
My deer were shot with a Thunderchild I finished just before this hunt. It is 66#@32" and 58" long. The arrow was a full length Dark Timber 340 with 300 up front.. tipped with a Bear razer head. My buck likely turned as I shot. The arrow entered in front of his shoulder, but punched through his offside leg. When he ran off, he broke the arrow then ran no more than 35 yards where he tipped over doing a face plant! I was amazed at the short retrieval! Upon finding the parts to my arrow, I discovered that the first half inch of my broadhead broke off during the process. BigJim
My doe came in straight under my stand. Somehow, I convinced her that I was a burl in a tree or something as after doing the head bob thing for a bit, she relaxed. I was hunting out of my tree saddle and leaning way out, but in no way had I considered shooting her that close. Finally she walked out to about 5 yards and looking the other direction when I sent another Bear razer through her heart.. this one also punched out her offside leg.
I'm sure the leg bones impeded penetration as neither arrow went more than half way through. The effect was devastating though. I wasn't so sure about the buck at first, but the doe leaving out and the arrow sticking out her leg left me no doubt as to the outcome! BigJim
Thanks for the writeup & pic BJ. :clapper:
