This will be like one Charlie Lamb would tell, but only because it's gonna take me til January 15th to get all the info for it... :biglaugh:
I've been a few times already, only skunked once when it rained me out after 20 minutes in the stand.
I've seen quite a few does and little bucks, the does that offer a shot always seem to have a runt fawn with them so I give them a pass.
The first decent buck I saw was on or about 10/6 , it's been pretty hot and dry here.
He showed up about sundown , but just didn't quite trip my trigger this early in the season. I only have one buck tag til gun season and didn't want to spoil the fun so early.

Now fast forward to today, 46 * and light West wind. This is already faster than my ol buddy Charlie...
I went to a stand on an old levee that pinoaks have taken over. This is not on the river, but at the bottom of hill where bottom starts. They used to build these to keep the hill water from flooding the bottoms.
Anyway just after daylight, I could hear a lot of acorn popping behind me on the hill side of levee, finally saw a small buck and thought what a hog with all the racket he was making. Well it turned out there were 3 bucks and that was the middle one . The bigger one worked a scrape limb and then idled down into the ditch above levee right behind me...
It was really too dark for pics but I took a couple of him at 20 yards
[attachment=1,msg2978454]
14 yards
[attachment=1,msg2978455]
Then the other 2 bucks fed on acorns in behind me and all around me as their bigger bud moved on somewhere else...
Middle sized buck at 10 feet
[attachment=1,msg2978458]
:coffee: :thumbsup:
And then the crowning moment of the morning...
Back in a bit, gotta get something to drink for a couple days... :laughing:
Keep going Kenny - I gotta get in a stand right quick.....
Tim B
Another buck shows up and lays his ears back , and they spar a bit , totally made my day!!!
About 15 yards
[attachment=1,msg2978464]
[attachment=2,msg2978464]
Something tells me Kenny might not have any buck tags anymore till gun season!!!
In!
Bisch
I'm still holding out so far, now if this one happens around in the daytime...
[attachment=1,msg2978468]
Thats it for today, gotta wait for more story to unfold...
Ok I'm in! Great story.
Nice
good start charlie!... oops, i mean kenny. hope this story turns out the way you want it to.
:thumbsup:
:campfire: :coffee:
Short story tonite, they put rain off til 2 AM so I went to back of my place under a huge pinoak. Finally a spike showed up and went by at 6 yards.
My sapper jacket pulled thru again, he had not a clue. :thumbsup:
Keep your feathers dry Kenny.

Keep your feathers dry Kenny.
Rainin this morn so to the shop it is. Got a guy wanting some stuff to build boomerangs ... (no kiddin)
Haven't touched a Boomerang since I was a kid...
Long story short..... I threw it, and it broke the picture window BEHIND me!!! :o
Good Luck, Kenny!!!
Am very much enjoying your hunts...
Good luck to you Kenny! You've been hanging out with Charlie Lamb too much by the way...
Hey it takes me three months huntin to make a three month story, my bud Charlie can make an evening sit last that long, and make it more exciting than my 3 months huntin!! :biglaugh:
I'll be following along...good luck! :campfire:
:archer: :thumbsup: Way to go buddy.
Need another pot.... :coffee: :thumbsup:
I figured I could bait Charlie out !! Now we need a story buddy!!
I didn't make it out tonite , had a meeting on some insurance that went late.
52 degrees in morn and nw wind will find me somewhere ! :thumbsup:
Keep it coming and good luck...
[attachment=1]
How long this story gonna take till ya get ah deer ole timer?
Want me to come out and shoot one for ya?
Best of luck Bro..
:wavey: :thumbsup:
[attachment=1]
[attachment=2]
Right now kinda lookin for the deer not a deer :goldtooth:
Oh this story don't end til January 15 , so hang in there!!
:laughing: :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :archer2: :campfire:
Great thread Kenny!
Be safe and shoot straight. :archer:
I did see 3 bigger bucks together at 75 yards, sparred for 5 minutes. and went on... :goldtooth:
Biggest was an estimated 130ish 10 point , possibly the same one I passed at the start of this thread, but didn't look quite as wide... :dunno:
Good stuff Kenny - I should get your cool weather by Friday eve or Saturday- can't wait this heat is getting old
Tim B
BTW, they are eating acorns and the acorns are falling quite a lot.
Good luck Tim!
Sposed to be around 40 Saturday morn. 56 this morn and they moved til 9:30
What broadhead is that?
Charlie, it's a VPA 200 grain 3 blade, got the third blade straight down.
I'm hangin' :coffee: :thumbsup:
Best of luck Kenny.
I haven't even been in a stand yet. Too dang hot and the mosquitoes are too thick.
Love the VPAs. One tuff broadhead. I'm using the 1-1/4" 250gr three blades. The lightest I could get with the bigger cut and long profile.
Well I'd like to skip this part of this story but it is part of it . I hung a portable yesterday at 2:00 , wind was right so I sat it last nite .
Two ways the deer should come from , they showed up at the best place but seemed to be going to bypass me by a few yards.
Then a big doe showed up from the other way and was gonna pass behind me, got turned and when she made the last shooting lane I shot. Arrow looked good but when it got below her back line I couldn't see it . She bolted and ran a big half circle . Arrow wasn't far and had bright red blood, no gut smell . Just smelled like deer meat. Very little blood, a few drops then specks then nothing.
I hang my head, I've shot a lot all year and am probably shooting better than ever.
Got no explanation to what happened at all but don't think she is hurt much .
Went back with my dog this morn and found nothing else .
Damn it !
Just found this! Wouldn't shock me if you get another crack at her Kenny.
David
Hate that for you Kenny, but it's happened to all of us that hunt very much at one time or another! It just sucks real bad when it happens to you!
Better luck on the next one.
Bisch
She will be fine Kenny...
We all been there done that.
:campfire: :coffee:
:coffee: :thumbsup:
Get back out there and stay after them! It's about 30 degree cooler here this morning and they should be movin...let's hunt
Tim B
Thanks Kenny. Been too warm in Pure Michigan to hunt effectively, so I'm getting my fix through your continuing story. Your recent bloody arrow episode has inspired me to practice my form even more than usual. Hopefully I'll have a full, unruly beard by the end of your 'Lamb-like' saga . . .
:archer2:
I'm still after em , just a bit humbled .
Only saw one doe last nite and this morn the wind was fickle and got winded twice, not enough for a snort session but nevertheless ...
Last nites views , where they should have come thru and where they come from ...
[attachment=1]
[attachment=1]
Hang in there, Kenny!!!!!
(I'm still hangin' lol) :coffee: :thumbsup:
Missed last nite for bro's birthday party, and this mornin because I just didn't want to get up...
Back after them tonite, bucks are on the move now with the cooler weather!! :thumbsup:
A bit warm but is going to cool off nice about any time. Sitting at a T intersection of an old levee and a fence and ditch . Saw a dang nice one here last year...
Warm last nite but went anyway. Had 2 does with a buck following. Never got to see the buck as it got dark before he made it...
This morning, I had a deer blow at me in the dark, then I think followed me to the stand and blew just to be sure I heard correctly.
Saw a few does and fawns and one medium buck on other side of creek following some does...
"This morning, I had a deer blow at me in the dark, then I think followed me to the stand and blew just to be sure I heard correctly." :laughing: :nono:
Thanks for keeping us posted Kenny and keep after them. It's getting chilly up here in PA so our bucks should be getting amorous soon.
Hey Kenny - I may have asked you before - but do you do the bowhunting survey - where ya just document what ya see? I've been doing it for years, I hope it helps them
Tim B
I used to ,but I got cranky about the crossbows in archery and quit. Might start again sometime tho...
Ya I hear ya there - I understand completely - at least they ask if a Xbow was used when ya check them in
Tim B
I'm kinda hard headed sometimes .
Quote from: kennym on October 18, 2021, 03:46:44 PM

I did the exact same thing in KS...2-3 years of telling them that x-bows belong in rifle season with no response, so I quit responding as well.
No deer tonite, short on time so went to back of my place under a huge pinoak that's been dropping . Long ways from bedding areas but I was out and got to watch the moon come up...
[attachment=1][attachment=2]
"Blend in"..... LOL :thumbsup:
It's a good day when you get to see the Sun rise in the morning
and the Moon rise in the evening...... :archer:
Good luck kenny. Bummer about the doe
:coffee:
That face mask is an improvement, just sayen.
:laughing:
Thanks Roy! You oughta try one! :biglaugh:
Last nite saw a tall narrow buck twice and a doe. Not bad for full moon,70*, and acorns falling everywhere(mostly where I wasn't I guess)
Yeah but he ain't that mask correctly according to the CDC ( crazy deer chasers ).
:laughing:
That's a big tree your in!
Tim B
It's a double pin oak that is dropping, but so is every other tree around. LOL
Still a big one!
Tim you should see some of the White Oaks he has around. 5 to 6' diameters.
Last nite I saw 4 gobblers at 8 yards from my stand, I didn't even try em because they are so sharp eyed x 4. Was just glad they went on without a fuss.
Then saw 5 does total and one nice 10 point who stayed the course at 40 yards. Too far for me...
Great evening to be out tho, steady wind and cool. :thumbsup:
:campfire: :coffee:
Skipped this morn, 0 wind and that never seems to work for me. Feel like I'm in an ever widening pool of human stink .
Goin to back of my place tonite. Wind is supposed to be right and maybe this one will come by ...
[attachment=1]
Wish ya luck, Kenny..
Neighbor guy's son may have gotten that one tonite. They had no blood and are waiting til morn...
I had an interesting sit but no shots presented. My stand and wind direction worked well as all the critters were downwind 6 to 12 yards away...
First off was a 40 mph rabbit at 8 yards with a 40 mph coyote right behind... Then about a minute later a bigger yote came thru just downwind of the chase a couple yards. No shots due to thick limbs on that side.
Tried squeaking them back in but no dice. Not all that hungry I guess...
Then at dark I could hear deer coming , popping acorns , agonizingly slow to get there. Dark when they did, so I sat there til they were quiet for a bit and came home.
No hunt tomorrow due to plans, and 100% chance of rain Sunday, so Monday it is! :thumbsup:
This is a great story. Keep it coming!
Terry , that one is still on his feet, he did kill another nice one with wheels, so no pics here... :thumbsup:
Just found this. That's a good deer Kenny. Go get him. It's good to know I'm not the only nut that sits in a tree all fall chasing dreams.
May not be any hunting for a few days , todays tornado took a neighbors place completely out. So have offered to help with cleanup .
Sorry to hear that Kenny.
Hope they are all ok.
No injuries that I've heard, but a LOT of cleanup...
Well this week bombed, 2 days of storm cleaning, now 3 days of rain forecast. :dunno:
Maybe Saturday, bucks are following does a little , bout time to try an all dayer.
:bigsmyl:
Rain is sposed to be done by noon Friday, so will be back at it. Bro has a new stand spot scoped out(he got rained on looking) , so if it lets up sometime today for a bit, we will move one there. :thumbsup:
Ya skeered yer gonna melt?
:laughing: :laughing: :thumbsup:
Yup, that would be a mess ... :laughing:
Enjoying the read along Kenny. Good luck!
Eric, I sent you an email concerning the order!
We must be crazy(so my wife says) but we went in a light to medium drizzle and moved a stand. Supposed to rain til tomorrow morn, so scent we left will hopefully be gone.
About 5 trails in shooting distance, good cover , good entry/exit down sandy ditch bottom . 4' diameter scrape in timber we are in so high hopes.
Hope springs eternal from a bowhunters breast... Don't remember who said that!
Took this one bout 40 yards from there, now why did we move that stand???
[attachment=1]
That was the biggest bodied deer I've taken, didn't get him weighed and have regretted that ever since.
Had a head like a Hereford bull...
Good luck kenny. I had good sightings in the pouring rain at the north farm on the backside of the wooly.
It should be good but windy tomorrow, after a couple days of rain, they should be on their feet!!
Well, Kenny... Some may call me stupid...?? BUT!!!
I've always had good luck hunting in the wind!!! :thumbsup:
I think a swirling wind, confuses them. They get a wiff... Then it's gone!! Can't tell exactly where it came from??
They seem to distrust their nose, and use their eyes more...
Just one old fart's opinion..... Good Luck!!!!
I like a steady wind 5-10 but you don't always get what ya want but sometimes ya get what ya need. :biglaugh:
I'll take it as long as not raining. Blood goes away real quick when it rains. :thumbsup:
Well, we hunt mountain deer... The wind never blows the same way twice, LOL :banghead:
We hunt from the ground. We walk the woodroads, and sit either above or below them.
(for the morning and evening thermals) :pray: More times then not, ya get set down and the wind changes....
OK, after 2 1/2 days of rain, back at it. Figured the deer would be ready to go, so got on stand at 12:13 pm and sat til dark, 6:30ish in the spot I was in. I leave when it gets too dark to pick a spot(for me) .
Wind was 20 -25 with higher gusts, I can attest to the higher gusts!! The deer were pretty jumpy, any stick that fell , they about jumped out of their skin!
Only saw one decent buck , a medium 8 point which would have gotten a pass had he gotten close enough. He was busy chasing a doe and she went back the other way.
Saw 4 spikes, a forky , 6 big does and a fawn (may need to thin the yotes?)
Just before dark , 3 big does and a fawn ran in from the East right under the stand. I waited , figuring something was chasing them, but they turned and ran back after a couple minutes. Guess they wanted to give him another chance...
As you can tell , I'm not as good at this as the other MO guys! Heck ,they make it look so easy!
Pics in a bit from my phone , computer is better to type on, but phone is better to add pics from.

[attachment=2,msg2980514]
I think you're way better than some of us. I can't buy a shot at a doe and it's always nice when a buck surprises you that you're not expecting.
I only know two things about deer, they always come from behind me , and I don't know anything about deer... :biglaugh:
BTW I got skunked tonite ...
6 does and 2 fawns this morn , figured I'd see more as it was a comfy 45 and 14 mph wind
One doe with little fawn came thru at 12 yards but I gave her a free pass ...
Hard for me to shoot a doe with a fawn. Especially a little fawn.
Yeah me too. There are plenty without fawns .
Went home , ate lunch , drank coffee, visited the hunters on the lease and back at it. Two years ago I killed a buck on Halloween , guess what stand I'm in ???
Snowed two years ago too ...
[attachment=1]
Well well looky here ...
[attachment=1]
Me thinks 'dere may be more to dis post!!!
Naw....Kenny don't shoot the little ones!
Tim B
Don't shoot the little ones with the best 12 days of the whole bow season coming up. Then the Orange Army takes over!!
Little is a relative term tho, since I've never killed a big one... LOL
Tonite's hunt, went in at 2:30 for a 4 hour sit. Bumped two does about 20 yards from stand. They just ran off without any snorting.
A little later a doe showed up behind me, you can hear em in the leaves again. I turned my head , maybe a little too quick and she busted me. She ran back about 40 yards and let me know how displeased she was . Only one snort so I was good with that.
About 3:00 I heard walking behind me again, and could see antlers, so I eased to my feet. Soon I could tell he was getting a free pass, young small racked deer...
He stopped and smelled where the 2 does had been bedded, and came right on , passing my ladder stand at about 10 feet in thick brush. Then proceeded out in field road, there he got a hint of something, prob where I climbed the ladder. Calmed down and crossed the field road into the planted oaks and brush. The pic was at about 18-20' from me.
Next a doe and fawn came from the left, crossed in front of me , easy shot that I didn't take. In a minute I was kinda wishing I had, as she winded me a little and finally ran off blowing every jump.
In a bit a single doe showed up and she was looking. She also winded me and blew and took off.
Man this is getting monotonous , but the wind has died, and I'm hopin the thermals start sucking to the creek behind me.
A little later a big doe comes out of the planted trees what used to be downwind before the thermals started trying to work. She comes up toward me like she is hunting me, but fails to get a nose full and turns and walks off in disgust.
Note to self- Don't hunt that wind if its gonna die down before dark! :knothead: :laughing:
Note: The fluffs I dropped early in the hunt went about 6' and then went almost straight up out of sight, thought I was golden...
I've been known to just get out and leave. I hate blowing a stand up like that.
Maybe a shower once a week would help ya?
:laughing:
:wavey:
I almost left but the wind was dying and had 30 minutes left when the snortfest happened . At that point I just stayed hoping the thermals would help and they did. Last doe couldn't get my scent.
Roy, that would double my water bill but I might try it. If it works for you it should work for me... :biglaugh: :wavey:
:wavey: :laughing:
Rain today so I moved a stand, now for a Southeast wind.
:campfire: :coffee:
Dead calm this morn , that's ok cause I have to get some work done in shop.
Here's a couple pics of some I'd like to see...
[attachment=1]
[attachment=2]
[attachment=3]
[attachment=4]
[attachment=1]
Crippled buck , had pix last year and figured he wouldn't make it thru winter , he's a tough sob. Not sure whether to take him or admire him ...
if coyotes havent got him yet, is is tough.
From the bur and mass he's a younger deer no?
Sometimes that antler will straighten out the second year after an injury. I'd give him a pass.
And even if it's always wonky it may be really cool as a 5 or 6 year old.
Top and 3rd one is the same deer. I like the gimpy one! :)
R
Yep Ryan, same clean eight, only diff is he's out in daylight now!! :goldtooth:
Keep at it kenny
This afternoon I got out of the shop, visited the hunters on lease, and grabbed my stuff and headed to what we call the Rut Stand. NW wind is perfect for it, and it was light NW this afternoon and around 50 degrees...
Just got set up in the stand and texted bro to tell him I was in that stand, when a deer across the creek moved. Got my binos out and it was a doe, then another set of legs...
These had a tremendous buck attached. 10 points, dark rack foot long tines. Heck his g4 s were 5 or 6" long.
I don't have my deer measured, but bro and I guesstimate score just to tell each other roughly what we see.
My guess on this one would be 150+
He's walking slowly South along other side of creek at 70ish yards (about 52 past my effective range) , so I grunt when I think he is gonna go on.
Nothing, so I hit the rattle bag a little when he is behind a cottonwood. He stops for a minute, then starts slowly on, Now he is in the open, so what the heck , I snort wheeze.
THAT got his attention, he stands looking hard and mean across the creek for a minute, then goes back North to a cut down into creek and down in the creek he comes. You can't see down in the creek from my stand but I'm guessin he will come up in a second...
Now I'm on my feet and ready, heart rate is around 200 , trying to breathe quietly ...
Oh man.....
Well he outsmarted me , never came out and never went back up other bank .
So after relaxing and enjoying nature for awhile , I heard something to my left...
Now this is where my buddy Charlie would let ya hang for a week or 6 but I'm gonna finish up in a bit.
It's not the same buck and not as big but old and gray looking, coming up the field road straight toward me. I'm in the corner of the field so he will either come right in front at 8 yards or go along field road at 15 yards. He's at 25 yards and I have my fone out to take a pic of him, but for some reason known only to my instincts :o , I dropped it back in my coat pocket and slipped my bow up out of my rubber boot...
Now he is closing and turns to go along edge of warm season grass field. Comes into the shooting lane I cut a month ago when I locked the stands back tight on the tree...
Oh yeah , I got a pic of the seat we use on these stands ...
[attachment=1]
Ok where were we?
He turns and heads up the edge of the field . I'm at full draw and when he is wide open I give a little meh . He stops and the arrow is gone...
[attachment=1]
I watch him bolt thru the tall grass, just before the other edge of the field, he gets behind a tree from me...
Hmmm, figured he would fall before he made it across the little field...
I pick a dead tree on other edge of field where he was headed last time I could see him.
Text bro and tell him I shot one. He said the wind had switched where he was and a doe was stomping a hoof a hundred yards down the timber so he will be over in a bit...
I give him some time since it's early , and while I'm getting my gear together another bigger buck comes from the North, and would have passed in front of me at 8-10 yards if he hadn't seen the big monkey putting stuff in his pack. :biglaugh:
So I follow the blood, even tho I know about where he left the field. Found 2 pieces of my arrow, but not the broadhead, which was what I wanted . 6' tall grass is easy to lose stuff in. He only went about 30 yards past where I last saw him. Just made the treeline.
And bonus, he ran toward the truck!
[attachment=1]
He's a decent 9 point, not huge but a good longbow buck for me. Now I can get a couple does and wait for rifle season...
Entrance pic, exit was back a little, he was quartering to me a bit more than I thought.
[attachment=1,msg2981013]
Sorry I look a bit grumpy, knee has been killing me ...
[attachment=1]
Congratulations! That's a great looking buck, and a nice end to the story.
Great story, pic's, and buck all the way around!
Awesome buck Kenny!!! I love how big and thick the deer get up north. Waaaaaaay bigger than most of ours down here.
Congrats!!!!
Bisch
Alright!! Nice one Kenny. Played your cards just right!
Congrats!
Tim B
Very nice! I want one just like that!!!
That's a beautiful 9pt! Congrats!
Awesome Kenny, congrats...
:thumbsup: :thumbsup:
Way to go Kenny!!!!!
David
:thumbsup: good one! congratts! :thumbsup:
Congrats Kenny dandy buck and always great story telling felt like I was there with you! :clapper:
Good shot Kenny!
I wanted to ask about your arrows, there was a picture you posted of one of your arrows, it appeared to be straight fletched. Do you Not have any twist or was it just the camera angle? Just curious...
Thanks guys!! :notworthy:
I have straightened the helical to a slight offset with a straight clamp. Trying for a quieter arrow.
Sometimes I can hear the arrow on the way to target with the helical, so I figure deer can also hear that and possibly duck.
After much testing, I believe the offset fletch will do the job if you're tuned well.
Good eye there!!
Also, this hunt isn't over til January 15th, I can buy doe tags all day long...
Buck hunting is over til November 13th when rifle season starts, will be using same bow then.
Congrats :thumbsup:
Nice buck Kenny.
Congratulations on a fine buck Kenny. I'd be curious what his jaw looks like. He appears to have a little age on him. Thick bodied beast.
👍
Do you ever send in teeth? That one is like bucks I see and kill on my place in MO, not too far from you. I can never figure if they are 3 1/2 or 4 1/2 yrs old.
R
All right Kenny !! Nice one and good shot.
Congrats nice buck
NICE! Congratulations.
COGRATULATIONS, Kenny!!!!!
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper: :archer: :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Well done Kenny! Congrats, that's a good one!
Thanks folks, I haven't ever sent in jawbones, I guess it was not too important how old they were.
I'm gonna let him hang a day or two and when I get him cut up, the doe hunting begins...
Til rifle season, then back to bucks. Variety is great!!
Congrats! Really nice buck there. Thanks for sharing the story too!
Way to go Kenny! Very nice buck and I'm thoroughly enjoying this thread!
Congrats Kenny, I've been enjoying your posts.
Great job Kenny!!
Looks like a solid mature buck.
Congrats :thumbsup:
:clapper: :clapper: Great Buck Kenny! :clapper: :clapper:
Congrats Kenny. Nice one. Thanks for the ride along.
Congratulations!
Very nice bud! I know you want that 3 blade back. Great story tellin too... though it seems like you are rushing it a little. :goldtooth:
:goldtooth: Charlie I want it and thought about goin back . It's prob on about 6" of arrow . It's in grass about 5-6' tall so not sure I'd ever see it . Plus bro is huntin so I don't want to do anything to mess with him. I'm tryin to drag it out !!
Thanks for all the comments guys!!
Time for a metal detector. :wavey:
Already thought that :biglaugh:
Congratulations nice Buck kennym :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Add my atta-boy to the list! Nice deer there for sure.
Very nice Kenny!
Back in a stand tonite, more to look and enjoy than to shoot another deer today.
One buck and two does , one had very little tail ...
[attachment=1]
[attachment=2]
Nice one Kenny! Headed to Linn County deercamp on Monday for the last week of Civil hunting before orange comes out. Hope to do as good!
Congrats,
Rodd
Thanks Rodd, but you know there are no deer in Linn Co ... :biglaugh:
OK , the work is done so back to the fun ... :bigsmyl:
[attachment=1]
That a Weston?
Tim B
I almost bought a Weston but went with a LEM
So far so good
I splurged on a Weston this year....love it but the bigger LEM I've heard good things about also!
Tim B
This is an 8 big bite stainless
You can spend as much as you want on grinders !!! :scared:
Since I burned my tag I'll be overrun with bucks
LOL
That's 2 of 4
[attachment=1]
[attachment=2][attachment=3][attachment=4]
None seem as good as the one you got.
They were youngins, but have some good potential!
They look good. Hopefully I'll see one or two when I get up there later this week for the general season.
Workin in shop today but here's 2 of 4 bucks I saw last nite
[attachment=1]
[attachment=2]
Got the euro done except a plaque to mount it on...
[attachment=1]
Euro looks good Kenny.
What's your technique.
This year with all the shop work I had so far this week I took it to a buddy!
LOL
Normally I skin it and get all the brain I can out, then simmer it for 45 minutes to an hour with a little dawn dish soap in water . Then power wash it (or car wash) and I have some peroxide the ladies put on their hair that I paint on skull only .
Leave that in sun for an hour or two and wash good.
Be sure to protect antlers from steam or they can crack
:thumbsup: :thumbsup:
Rifle starts Saturday, I bought a rifle tag to be legal hunting with my bow... :biglaugh:
Well buddy after almost 3 years I finally got back out in the woods. I've got a pop up blind about a hundred yards behind the house and morning before last I had a buck coming in. He hung up around 60 yards I away. He wasn't much but I'd take him at this point. I've since done some work brushing it in and think that should help.
Depending on how my back feels I get out when I can. I still plan to get up your way this season.
Dang Charlie, I'm glad you got out!! :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
Bro called a buck in this morn with a can call. Thought about grunting but with the rut this close decided to can him. It worked!! Only once for me in several years so I haven't even been carrying it, guess I should! LOL.
Well done Kenny, surprised I missed this. Congratulations on a great buck
Good Luck Charlie you got to be in it to win it LOL
Bro got r done this morning !! First hunt on that stand , I told him it was worth the 15 minutes it took to move it there!!

Awesome!! Nice bow ;)
You McKenzie boys always look sooo happy in the pics. Lol
LOL, it was a tough track that we finished just before rain started! Stress overload... :biglaugh:
Liver hit buck that we let go for 5 hours and he never laid down til he fell over. Ended up in 7' tall warm season grass. When he went in there I was beginning to wonder if we would find him with the red stems on some of it. I think it was pure refusal to quit on our part that got us there... :thumbsup:
Oh- sister bow to mine. I built them and let him pick the one he wanted... :saywhat:
I hate that grass!!! :banghead:
Intuition , luck and guesswork last 5o yards in it...
John said he wouldn't stop when he came by stand, he bleated once and the buck kept goin ,then made a loud some kind a bleat noise and he stopped long enough to shoot but hit a bit far back...
Congrats to your brother Kenny!!!!
Great buck!
Bisch
A job very well dun!!!
Congrats to bro
Tim B
:thumbsup: :thumbsup:
Way to stay on the track. Amazing how tough they can be.
Congratulations to your brother.
Another really nice deer!
Congrats to Kenny and his brother! :thumbsup:
Gonna be a danged orange sunrise in the morning. As in blaze orange, but I'll be there. Makin a plan right now, then go thru my pack to see what I can live without(most of it LOL) as it will be a long ways in to the stand I want to be in.
Way to go to you and your brother for the tracking job Kenny. Very nice buck! :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
Sitting here in my orange best listening to the guns goin off.
Four does , a fawn , and this guy who was almost enough to trip the trigger...

:thumbsup: :thumbsup:
Stay after 'em Kenny!!!!!!

Are his front legs really light color or is that just the way the pic came out? Loving this thread. Keep it up.
Yeah I prolly would've been slinging carbon and steel his way. Especially as windy and cold as it was up here in NW Missouri today.
Honestly can't say about his legs, but I guess they are grey...
This afternoon's hunt >>>------------>
I got in stand on south lease (I hunt the lease during gun because bro has other folks there for gun) at 1:00 pm , after about 20 minutes a buck comes thru north of me , wind is SW so I waited to see, and all good! He was young and moved on ...
Next up a doe and fawn come from NE and all still good. Actually didn't get busted at all and had deer on all sides before I was done.
Then a doe comes from NW and a grunter behind her. Nice 10 I think, dark rack, looks good, gonna shoot...
She circles behind me and he cuts across in front, but now coming straight on as she moves away. I'm at full draw for awhile and he springs forward and I give him the ol TV mehh. Stops just before getting behind the brush(more on that in a minute) and I drop the string. The arrow looks real good, midway up behind shoulder , 8 yards out, I'm thinkin dead deer!! :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
He takes off and runs about 50 yards, and stops, I wait for him to topple, but he snorts twice and walks over the edge of a low spot. Never had one snort on a kill shot but what the hey, all good...
Now there is grunting in the low spot where he went?? Now a buck coming in behind my left shoulder, no blood on this side, he turns and passes on my left side showing his right side, no blood on that side either. It's a different buck and a heck of a lot bigger! I have an arrow on but I'm not shootin with one already dead down there. He goes across in front , then turns and comes back across, 12 - 15 yards , clean lanes. That will test ya!! :laughing:
Finally the buck and the half dozen does leave and I get down to look at my arrow stuck in the dirt. It's clean?? It looked like a textbook shot!!
Then I see the itty bitty dead cedar limb about 1/8" thick that it hit, and turned it down into the dirt. Amazing what my mind was sure it saw but wasn't...
On to the next! Those two were both too lucky I reckon...
Yes Gerald, it was cold all day!! Wore the windproof stuff and it wasn't quite enough this morning! :saywhat:
OH MAN! that sucks. maybe a bigger one tomorrow, :thumbsup:
No hunt today, but will in morning. Then shop mid day or so, then maybe back out tomorrow eve.
Man the gun guys (and me ) get all the good buck movement. :biglaugh:
Congrats John. Keep after him kenny
Congratulations Kenny. Very nice buck!
View this morning...
[attachment=1]
Saw a half dozen does , five bucks , and a couple squirrels .
Had a doe grunting , maybe she identifies as a buck ... :biglaugh:
Well the big guy got gunned... At least it was a young lady who had never gotten a whitetail... :thumbsup:
This one on back of my place may be his younger bro , about a mirror image ...
[attachment=1]
Bummer.
That's quite the chunk taken outa that fellers ear. :o
Should be easy to tell if you have pics of him...past or present.
Brad I bet that hurt!
Here's one of this mornings bucks, no pic of the other one ...
[attachment=1]
Looks like you are in a small cedar tree on the South farm. :goldtooth:
Yep it ain't all that comfy but the deer numbers on there make it bearable ... :biglaugh:
Different stand tonite on a big sycamore , saw 5 bucks, a bunch of does and 21 turkeys . Only one deer close nuff , think he almost had me while I was taking the pic .
[attachment=1]
Good stuff Kenny - the cold front you have should be here in the morning - NW winds and they should be moving
Tim B
Yep, it will be pretty cool in the morning,30 with an 8 mph wind, they are calling WNW here, and I hung a new stand a couple days back for that wind. The biggest buck I saw tonite came from somewhere over that way...
Oh, there was some kinda chasing on one doe tonite... :bigsmyl:
Do tell.......
Low speed chase, but the best effort I've seen so far.
Had a plan for this morning but it didn't materialize. Had a low sugar early this morning and for whatever reason I freeze my arse off for a few hours after those so I didn't figure 30 and facing the wind would be much help...
Keep after em Kenny
Skunked tonite , near full moon. Maybe midday is the time ?
We saw deer this evening. I saw two fawn and a buck. He was 200 yards out and moving quickly.
I just don't think the rut is in full swing in this area of Missouri.
Yep, I wasn't sure if I missed it or it hadn't started yet...
Where ya at in MO Gary?
In southeast mo I saw chasing early this week but haven't seen anything in the past 3 sits - but the morning is young and the K-Mag waits patiently
Tim B
Haven't been out to Missouri hunting my place this year, but here in Western Indiana I've been experiencing the most solid breeding lockdown I've ever witnessed. Passed up around 20 bucks between 25th Oct and 9th Nov. On November 10 somebody turned a switch and virtually no deer sightings till last night. Last nite I had a 2 1/2 year old cruiser come by and saw 5 antlerless. If you are seeing lone fawns and few bucks the rut is into breeding phase.

Harrison county. Just east of Bethany and Gilman City.
This morning started a little rough, got to the stand in good time but left something in the truck so left my gear and walked back to truck ,then back to stand. Still made it 5 minutes before shooting time. Ahhh...
Soon a young 8 showed up at 30 yards, but the wind wasn't going yet and the thermals took a hint of stink to him and he got nervous and went back the other way. 30 minutes or so , a doe comes from behind me on my right in the field, right where I walked in (twice) but turns into the woods behind me about 20 yards back. Acted like she never smelled me, wonder if she had covid?? She went on about her business and in another 20 minutes I had a feeling and looked back there again. Big 9 point , well past his ears and heavy but not real tall, maybe 8" 2s and 3s . Didn't even see his eyeguards or the 9th point til he turned in same place as the doe and crossed behind me. Too much tangle to shoot, so I watched him with binos as long as I could.
He went down to dry creekbed and then came back up my side but angling away back the way he came.
I've had this happen before, and I think next time a lone doe comes by I'm gettin down and going to where the wind favors me for shooting her trail, prob never be another buck by! LOL
Tonight, I went to bro's to a stand that hasn't been hunter this year, not much happening, saw a buck on neighbor following a doe, a doe and fawn came by at 30 , and 2 fat raccoons . Oh and a half dozen squirrels...
This mornings sunrise, blessed to be able to be there!
[attachment=1]
Tomorrow is another day. Stay on em.
:thumbsup: :thumbsup:
A little behind , Saturday evening I went to the stand where bro got his buck, saw one buck with a gimpy right front and right antler broke off, car wreck?
Also about 10 does and fawns , nothing in range . Couple pics from stand ...
[attachment=1]
[attachment=2]
Sunday morn went to S4 on lease , also known as the gap stand, saw a hundred or so crows and a doe and spike.
Sunday eve went to N3 on lease, wind was crap so relocated to S2 and wind blew hard til almost dark. Then saw 2 does ...
Keep after em Kenny. I think that things are really gonna pick up this week as far as bucks doing some cruising/seeking. They seemed to have been locked down hard with does and aren't going very far to find a hot doe after each one gets bred. It seems that traditionally, this time period through early December is killer for the river farm that I hunt.
After today I'm off work for 6 days. Gonna scout tomorrow and will be back hunting again on Wednesday.
I hope so Jake, but my hunt time will be limited this week. Several things I've been putting off are gonna need done, then family here for Thanksgiving...
Good luck man!! :thumbsup:
Ok Thanksgiving stuffing season over and back to it , went to a new stand location that hadn't been sat yet, 7 minutes in here comes a nice doe .
[attachment=1]
Ended up seeing five more does at distance and a small buck pestering them .
I don't think I could've restrained myself on that opportunity. Missouri deer taste too good.
I know but we are pretty good on venison and the bucks are chasin again :bigsmyl:
Had shop work today but tomorrow is lookin pretty good...
I was fortunate to bring home 3 deer from up there. Freezer is well stocked. I wish you luck on another buck.
Thanks Gary! There is plenty of time left. :thumbsup:
Less bucks after gun season tho, those females will get ya killed no matter what species... :biglaugh:
:biglaugh:
Truth!
North wind in morning, back to a E/W travel corridor from feed to bed. Hoping to see some activity...
Hope the deer read the playbook! :thumbsup:
Passed a 10 yarder this morn on this one. Also saw a better one at 35 ish and 8 does
[attachment=1]
[attachment=2]
[attachment=3]
This afternoon wind is dead calm so not gonna stink anything up .
Sure makes it hard to pass them when they make themselves easy targets. Lol
You have some good self control. Especially when they act like they want to be shot like that. :biglaugh:
He was tempting when he turned away like that . :biglaugh:
4 does this morn with a sucky wind, they didn't bust me but knew something was up and tuned back. So I left before a buck came thru and pegged me. Shop work now... :thumbsup:
About ready to refuse to hunt unless I have a 5 mph plus steady wind. :laughing:
No or swirling wind is definitely a bad deal. Having to count on thermals on those days is iffy at best.
That was the prob this morn I think , 3 mph from wsw and thermals pulling west so it just yo-yo back n forth
We rarely have to worry about winds below 5-10 mph in SD and only consider it windy if blowing more than 30 mph. However, it can make it feel like you're sitting on a telephone pole when the wind comes up as anyone in SD and ND will attest.
I don't need quite that much wind!! :biglaugh:
I've still been after them, but figured you all were tired of hearing about me not killin anything! :laughing:
I did have a close call with a great 8 point last Saturday, he was following does who obligingly came by at 18 yards, but he cut the corner and went by at 40ish.
Hope a super stud presents himself

No sir still interested but we started some management hunts to thin our doe herd so I spend 4 days a week working on boat docks and 3 days a week semi-guiding hunters. Still get some stand time but it's a busy time right now.
They are checkin my resolve at 15 yds . LOL
You have more will power than i do! :thumbsup:
Looks like the same dumb one from the 30th.
I could not pass that test!!
LOL could be same deer , half mile away from other spot
Fun to watch them even when you aren't shooting them.

Fun to watch them even when you aren't shooting them.
For sure, if I just wanted a deer, rifle would be easy and done in a short time. Great enjoyment watching them do their everyday life things.
These two were running buddies and sparred lightly a half dozen times while in view. :)
5 yards from what I thought was a decent buck, but it was so dark I only got a glint off the main beam when he turned. It looked long but it was so dark I couldn't see my arrow much less shoot , was glad the other two does kept me treed long enough for him to chase his 5 does in with me tho. :laughing:
Seems to happen when I really need to go.😧
Sometimes my need for a full freezer outweighs my desire to sit in a tree where I have little or no hope of getting a bow shot.
This year in Missouri that was the case. I haven't had Missouri deer in my freezer in several years. Choosing to bowhunt and leaving my rifle in Texas.
With our deer numbers up some from years past I decided to take both and was able to get a good buck with my rifle. But I did spend eight days passing on deer past my effective bow range even though i took both weapons to stand and relearning how the deer utilize my property following the clearing the gentleman who hays my property did. Next year I'll have options in place that will hopefully make bowhunting an option for success again.
As much as I love Texas Missouri holds a special place in my heart and the smell of the fall timber never fails to touch that spot.
He must be tracking one . . .
Not yet, but with the weather getting colder, there is still hope to run into the one I would like to.
Will need another doe at some point too... :thumbsup:
Here's one I wanna see ...
[attachment=1]
Yeah I'd say he's a good one.
5 bucks, 13 does yesterday morn, 2 bucks last nite. Nothing close except 4 really nervous does in morn.
Keep the updates coming Kenny. With the holidays and family stuff I won't get back out til after Christmas. So I'm getting my fix thru you.
Here is one of four in a bachelor group yesterday morn . They went by at 30 , too far for my liking and I'm still being more selective...
[attachment=1]
Last nite I sat on ground in a brushy fencerow . Just at dusk two deer showed up on neighbors cut beanfield bout a hundred yards out. With binos I could make our a maybe 12" wide rack on one and the other was much bigger bodied . Never could see the rack on it if it had one , had a patch of foxtail behind it.
He looks like he has potential.
I think all 4 were 2.5 year olds , that was one of the better ones, but they will all be bigger next year ... :thumbsup:
I'm gonna be grounded tonite too, for a different spot to be... :saywhat:
Last nite, I misjudged where the deer would enter the woodlot from the planted trees. I went too far in and the ol sniffy does tracked me a ways and decided to leave town...
8 doe and a medium 8 point...
This morning I went back where I saw the real nice 8 a couple weeks back. All the deer were West of me that day so I looped around and entered from the East . I'd never come in that way before so wasn't sure just how to get there. There was buckbrush for a few yards before I got to the stand.
Guess where the two does went? EAST of me and got nervous and went back where they came from. :laughing:
Oh yeah, there were three eagles in a big oak behind me on field edge. Then a murder of crows were on the ground out in field so I checked em out with binos and sure enough , there's a deer carcass.
So when I got down I walked out and had a look. Dead buck with one antler, picked his head up and there was no pedicel on other side, just a hole down into his head???
Think he got in a fight and broke it off deep in there and got infected?
Nature is a tough ole gal on critters.
Here is the buck I found yesterday morn, bro had an interesting thought: we had a tornado awhile back that hit the edge of that farm . Neighbor had some cattle killed . Wonder if the buck was a victim ?
[attachment=1,msg2985453]
This was on North lease , East of N1 ...
This morning I had two does come in just at first light, they were hunting me. I guess they saw or heard me come in because they seemed to know exactly where I was, but I refused to move a muscle. They stayed a loooong time it seemed. At 17* I needed to move but they kept me locked down. Maybe they figured they could freeze me out. Did see 4 bucks, 2 at close range but didn't wanna shoot either. Then a pair of twin 8s about 100 yds sparred around and kept me entertained for awhile. One I might have thought about if they had been close...
When all deer cleared out I headed for the truck, should have had some toe warmers in my boots! :laughing:
Was 2y degrees here in Texas as well. Sitka gear keeps my core and limbs warm just fine. My toes though . . .🥶
QuoteAt 17* I needed to move but they kept me locked down.
At least the bugs left ya alone:)
That's right Roy! He could be a little thankful for that. LOL!
I'd say you were on target the first time....broken off and died of infection. We found several that died of fighting like that over the years. Doesn't take as much of a hole as you would think, if the pedicles get torn up some with some punctures around them they can get infected and die. Usually found them in mid Dec to mid Jan. Seems like the infection takes that long to run em down.
R
I found a heavy antler a few years back with a chunk of skull on it , had a bunch of pics of the deer but none ever again. I always wondered if he lived thru that...
And I was happy there were no bugs, not even snow fleas... :biglaugh:
Toe warmers are one of the greatest hunting inventions ever.

Quite true, and I have a big box of em, but my feet hadn't been cold yet this year. Figured global warming would take care of me... :laughing:
Last night I donned my sapper jacket and leafy britches and went in... Actually went in , fixed my spot and then put my gear on.
Found what I thought was a good spot, and it was. First doe went by at 20, even looked straight at me. Second doe came to 15 head on and decided I didn't belong, so she stomped, head bobbed, and I waved her off. Unfortunately, she went a different direction than she came.
Yup, you guessed it, right down thru where I figured the buck would come from. A few minutes later I saw the buck angling past me at 200 yds. No binos needed to see that white rack! LOL, just another doe encounter!!
QuoteLOL, just another doe encounter!!
Yer just a chick magnet:)
:laughing:
Yup, can't help it!! :laughing:
:laughing:
First time anyone has said that about Kenny. :biglaugh:
Ya got that right:)
Hey now!!
Christmas afternoon I went where I saw the buck a couple nights back and...
Alright, alright, I saw 14 squirrels... :laughing:
No deer, but silhouetted about 20 in a bunch on the way out in a beanfield with wheat planted into it. :saywhat:
Back to feed patterns.
For sure, I have a couple acres of beans standing on my little farm. Waiting on the right wind...
Gonna get cold but no perfect wind in forecast.
May have to take a calculated risk in a few days when the cold hits...
We have one weekend left of general season here. At least in the county we are in. The two weeks of doe and spike season. But we don't shoot young deer and spikes generally are.
I still have a buck tag but with two Texas deer and three deer from Missouri in the freezer I have the option of being pretty selective on what buck that tag goes and honestly I haven't seen one the last six weeks that will do it.
I'll take another doe to donate and hope the pigs come back around soon.
Good luck Kenny!
We have 3-5 " of snow Saturday and cold. Don't look like the wind I need but I will have to probably try it anyway, the beans will go fast...
oh man! SNOW, push some down this way. ive been paitently waiting for some.
Now they say 1-3" ice and snow friday nite and 3-5" snow saturday...
Minus 4 on Saturday nite :campfire:
Deer gonna be out in daytime!! :thumbsup:
Better double up on them toe warmers! 🥶
Last nite, went to a stand at end of a cut corn field. Hadn't hunted it this year, saw about a dozen does and 3 bucks. First does came in as I watched them , lead nanny got to 20 and suddenly looked right up at me. I hadn't moved and didn't then. She went back a couple steps and turned downwind to check it out. Got directly downwind in the brush but couldn't detect me somehow...
Next was a forky and a few minutes later a decent 8 . Could have maybe shot the 8 quartering on at 10 yards, but don't like the chances of a bad deal on that.
More does ad fawns out of range ,then 5 or 6 does and fawns including 2 very large does and a spike that came by at 6 yards.
I won't regret not trying for the 8 point but may on those two big hammer headed does!! :biglaugh:
OH, winter will totally arrive tonite thru Sunday morn. Forecast is 9-14" of snow, 20 mph wind and wind chill at -9 :campfire: :coffee: :o
Just hunt...
:wavey:
-9 ouch!
Tonites spot in a fencerow on ground, there's a gate to left of pic they use sometimes . Hope this dude is still around ...
[attachment=1]
[attachment=2]
Wish ya luck bud.
Skunked tonight, guess they didn't get the weather report... :laughing:
Hopefully you can catch up with that big guy! How late does the season run down there? The buck I was hunting dropped his horns last weekend so my season ended early.
Season ends on Jan 15, our bucks usually drop late Jan thru March . I have a pic of one with a bum back leg that has already dropped ...
Had pics of him last winter and didn't figure he would make it but he did. Rack was screwed up on opposite side of bum leg .
[attachment=1]
It's amazing how hardy of creatures they are.
I'm surprised the coyotes haven't done him in to be honest. Got some pretty good sized ones around...
[attachment=1]
Negative 4 this morn, nice breeze too, but I'm a wimp anymore. Coffee sounds better this morning... :coffee:
Don't blame you at all Kenny.
Negative temps with a wind chill will suck the fun right out of a hunt.
9 degrees tonite and wrong wind for the stand on my place. So I took a little drive and pulled in on the edge of the road where I can see the stand. There was a medium buck in the bean patch when I pulled up. He didn't like the truck sitting there so he trotted off and hopped the fence.
Then with about 20 minutes of light 2 bucks and another deer came out by my stand . One was the one I'd like to see up close I'm pretty sure or an equally nice one. It's hard to be sure with fading light and weeds and beans for a background.
They fed out into the beans and 13 more deer joined them .
I may hunt there tomorrow evening If the wind is right ... :goldtooth:
HA, 15 one nite 0 the next. Can't understand them!! :laughing:

I know the feeling, happens to me more than I care to admit. I've still got a statewide tag I'm trying to fill, just not having much luck (or time) to do it. I'm hoping that the rain holds off for Saturday so that I could at least get a hunt or two in for this next weekend.
Keep after em Kenny.
Wind chill below 0 this morn , so shop work is the deal of the day. See what afternoon looks like but supposed to be stiff winds then too.
Yeah that makes for a tough open stand watch.
I'm gettin old I guess, -10 wind chill just doesn't appeal to me anymore...
Single digits all day today, and breezy too. :campfire:
I understand:)
Hope you finish strong kenny
Hard to be mad at them in conditions like that.
Wind chill is up to - 8 now, still ain't goin... :biglaugh:
Does gonna be on menu now tho when it warms a bit. :thumbsup:
Yer just a dainty little flower:)
:laughing: :wavey:
True that, but still got my seeds... :laughing:
LOL
Ya otta be in the shop making bows....
I gotta get back out there, makin jewelry boxes today. Makin 2 for a relative, but word got out and have orders for 7 more now. :help:
Did glue up a new model bow couple days ago... :thumbsup:
7 degrees in St. Louis this morning. How cold is it up there Kenny?
2 this morn, 5 now... Gonna be 18 this afternoon so will be somewhere out there... :thumbsup:
:thumbsup:
Hunted the west end of my beanfield last night, first deer out was the crippled buck. Too far, by 100 yards.
Then over the next couple hours, about 20 deer of various sizes, and when it was too dark to be shooting, 4 came by at 20. Didn't shoot...
Other plans this morning and possible rain this afternoon , so may be tomorrow before I get out again.
Could use one more in the freezer...
:thumbsup:
From the stand , not much goin on yet
[attachment=1]
Last night I saw a dozen does and a couple bucks, no shots...
This morning I didn't feel like facing into the 15 mph wind at 19* :dunno:
Last night I saw at a distance 7 does and 10 toms , lots of squirrels ...
This morning had other things going but plan on going in a few minutes... :thumbsup:
Stick one dude....
:archer2:
Slow tonite, 1 squirrel and 1 hawk. And he wasn't even chasin the squirrel. :laughing:
Got word tho that the deer were moving all day so they were prob tired this evening . Thats what ya get for workin in the shop.
Will miss tomorrow morning too, the snow is so crunchy I'm thinkin they can hear me walk in from the next zip code. Also have to get to town and try to get a package sent to the proper addy. :knothead:
the fat lady is backstage, tuning up to start singing..just sayin... :biglaugh:
Dang this is turning into one of those hard luck stories:)
:wavey: :laughing:
I can hear that big girl, but she don't worry me, I've had a blast, seen a lot of deer and different bucks, and I have some headphones with radio in em... :laughing:
Roy, not hard luck, the most hunting I've ever done and loved every minute of it!! :thumbsup: :wavey:
Sounds like a successful season.
Yep, Kenny, it's good to see the whole season picture! Mine went much like yours, shot a doe early, passed up a bunch of bucks, but the big one zigged when I zagged. I laid eyes on him 3 times but turns out he's smarter than I! 😀
If this was really about food, then a guy would be WAYYYYYY ahead of the game to go get a part time job at Walmart instead of hunting.....and buy all the groceries you need plus end up with extra change vs "wasting" all this time in a tree!
Good season, no regrets!
R
Absolutely guys! I still have thru Saturday but if no deer I'm still happy as can be!
I got to see 3 bucks bigger than any I've gotten up pretty close but not in my range, that right there makes a successful season for me!!
One at 100 , one at 35 ish and one at 20 but couldn't make the shot due to brush... :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :goldtooth:
Last night I went to a spot on back of my place on the ground by a cedar tree with home made ghillie. Had a gobbler fly up in a tree about 30 out. After while he moved closer a couple times ending up about ten yds out but 20 up in the tree. Not shootin up there!!
Then five deer came along but passed at forty yards
Beautiful evening to be alive!!! :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
Wind no good by feed fields this morn so slaved in shop ... :biglaugh:
:campfire: :campfire: :campfire:
Tonight I sat the end of the cornfield again, at 4:10 had a big doe come behind me (as usual) at 10 yards, she stopped but had limbs between us and when she took off , she sprinted across the open part. HA
Then had 4 gobblers at 60 out in the corn but they exited stage left and roosted...
Then looked down the edge of brush behind me and there stood a deer , a big deer...
It stood awhile and I glassed it , no rack. Then it started my way and I notice it has a front leg on the left about 6" long and hopping on the other front leg. Looks pretty painful. I'm gonna shoot it if it gets here before dark.
The deer never made it the 200 yards before dark and I don't know where it went, looked out in the corn and was 2 deer there, glassed them , small bucks, and when I checked back on the legless deer it was gone?
Well I'm going to my place for the last weekend of our doe/spike season tomorrow evening. Have three hunters coming in but I will also have one of the ranch partners to help shuttle hunters so I'm hoping I can find time to sit and maybe get a chance at a big doe.
Regardless of how the last few days play out for you Kenny I've really enjoyed your thread this season and appreciate you taking us along with you.
I agree w Gary, I've enjoyed your thread Kenny and have followed it, just didn't wanna hyjack it with my uneventful stories lol
I've got a few more hunts planned before it shuts down when the sun drops on the 15th

looks like you might get some snow up that way, thanks for letting us follow along.
hope a good one wanders by. :thumbsup:
Good luck Kenny! Thanks for taking us along on the ride so far!
Thanks guys !!
Different scenery tonite, this stand hasn't gotten much love this year but have seen some deer come from down in here ...

Get em bro..
Did have some bad luck this morning, listened to weather forecast . Sposed to be freezing rain this morn, hasn't happened...
Last night, I went to a stand 200 yards east of the one the night before, guess where I saw the 5 big fat ladies, I'm sure they were singing too... :laughing:
Saw the three legged buck, he has dropped antlers, kinda what I thought the night before. He never got closer than 60 yards, if he makes it thru the winter , he is a tough hombre.
Kind of a half arsed blizzard this morn with snow and 25 mph winds but snow is sposed to be done and wind down to 12 mph this eve so will have the last hurrah for 8 months!

I'll have to see if road needs cleared here in a bit...
Good luck this afternoon Kenny. I saw the 2 bucks yesterday evening that I've been after all season. I'm gonna give em one more go this afternoon too.
Good luck Jake ! Hope you let the air outta one!!
Well, came up almost empty on the final day of season. It was a hunt full of cold, snow, 1 buck, and 11 does.
We had several inches of snow with pretty good wind last night, so I plugged the tractor in this morning and cleaned a few driveways, ending about noon.
Took a little nap and got my hunting stuff on, toe warmers in boots, and a couple stuck inside my coat on the back . They are adhesive and work great, but I have to have a couple layers of clothing between me and them. Otherwise my safety harness pushes them in tight and gets too hot.
Planned on getting to the stand at 3:30 but was in at 3
Good thing, because a real nice 8 point showed up at 3:30 and caught me off guard. He just materialized at 35 yards, and I stood to be ready when he went behind a bunch of trees. Stand made a krinkly noise with the snow and ice frozen on it and he stopped for a minute. Then came on but staying 30 yards out.
He stops with head behind a big tree, and I draw and concentrate. But I'm not 100% sure on the shot so I let down and he goes on. Would have had to shoot between two trees a foot apart halfway there. Just didn't feel right...
Two things I hate are long blood trails- and long blood trails...
Ended up seeing 11 does after that, none close enough, almost, but not quite.
Got a few last day pics on my fone I'll post in a few...
All in all it was a great season and thoroughly enjoyed!! :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

I wish we would've got the snow, but we just got wind and rain. I never had anything closer than 80 yards and of course never saw the bucks from the previous evening.
