This will be my first deer season hunting on public land in Nebraska, I usually hunt a few pieces of private in Indiana but work has me in Colorado and Nebraska for this season. Trying to find a good mobile set up for tree stand hunting. Something I can hike in with and hike back out with fairly easily. What do you guys prefer? An actual climber or a hang on stand with tree steps? Also can any of you Nebraska guys can tell me if I'm wasting my time on the east side of the state trying to hunt public?
Lone Wolf hang-on or climber will work just fine, if you can find trees to put them in. Hang on and sticks are probably a tad more versatile i.e., you can use them in crooked, branchy and/or large trunked trees, but do weigh a little more and take just a tiny bit longer to set up.
A straight tree for a climber can be hard to find in that country. Would go with hang-on.
Trees can also be few and far between in a lot of that country (eastern/front range Colorado and western Nebraska)....so there is a good argument to be made for a pack seat.
I have both the LW sit and climb and the Assault hang on with steps. If I could only have 1 stand it would be the LW hang on. Very versatile set up , I feel it's quieter than a climber. Plus if nature calls or you need to get down for some reason it's no problem.
Hang on would be my 1st choice as well when picking one stand between your 2 choices.I would combine that with some climbing sticks personally.You can bungie everything together.The sticks bungied together and then bungie them to the stand and get some comfortable wide backpack straps for the stand.You want a tight quiet unit thats not too heavy.
I have used tree steps and they work.But I prefer the climbing sticks.Some times a couple tree steps for the bottom of the tree and then climbing sticks is good depending on how you want to hunt.
Or if you want to shave some weight and streamline your pack 3 steps and 2 climbing sticks will get you up high enough most the time.
I like my Loc On Limit treestand with 3 Leverage steps or 4 Hawk Helium tree steps and 20' of life line is only 17# and packs in well. I prefer it over any climbing treestand.
Lone wolf alpha 3 lone wolf steps one adder. Up tree 10 minutes max about 15 to 17 to base , Very quiet . I usually have some trees already with steps in them legal in my area so then just hang stand even faster and quieter. I have used climbers through the the years they can be effective but have trees picked out in advance . Summit makes good one very comfortable for all day sit (Viper) .Hammock seat . They are noisy if you do not take your time and mine has shooting rail you must shoot over .
Depends on trees in area I would say. But the hang on and sticks will be more versatile.
