Title: Metacarpal fracture
Post by: galadriel on August 15, 2021, 09:01:26 PM
Two weeks ago I fell down some stairs and fractured the 4th and 5th metacarpal fingers (pinky and one next to it). Went to Urg care and they put a splint on my hand. Tomorrow I finally see an orthopedist and I'm expecting he/she will recommend surgery bc my pinky finger is rotated and scissors over the digit next to it.  This completely screws up my plans for the approaching hunting season. I can't draw my longbow back but I can use a the release to pull my compound to draw. Has anyone fractured the bones of their hand before? How long did it take for you to heal?  A doctor I know said if I end up having surgery it'll be about 10 weeks. Theoretically that would put me at the beginning of November for hunting..   this really stinks

What you are describing is known as a boxer's fracture. Depending on the amount of displacement, surgery might be necessary. The type of surgery will dictate the recovery. You are probably looking at 8-12 weeks.

Long healing process.  I've had several fractures of the hands and fingers over the decades.  Fortunately many were on my left hand but a few years ago I trashed the knuckle of my right ring finger and in has left me with permanent damage.  Take the time to heal.  I didn't and now have limited movement, it bends atvan angle and arthritis is a pain.
