Title: My arrow setup
Post by: wildgame on July 28, 2021, 02:23:36 PM
Ok got a question ( that I'm sure I know the answer to) but I want make sure I'm thinking right and not getting a false reading. I started out with a 500 spine black eagle instinct cut down to 28 3/4( can't go shorter the outsert is 1/4 inch from riser) and was showing still a slight weak with the 100 outsert and a 125gr point. So I ordered 400 spine in the same arrow , I'm down to 28 3/4 and it's tuned great to a 150 gr point. I was hoping to use a 200gr head was my reasoning for going stiffer.  Am I crazy or am I just over thinking this and need to go to a 340 spine? O yeah my bow set up is a tall tines 50 @28 , 58 inch bow, and I'm drawing right at 28. I've had several bow in this weight range and always got a 500 spine arrow to tune with a 150gr head, just throwing me off a bit.

If those 150 heads are flying straight and true I really doubt trying to add 50 more grains will increase penetration significantly enough to affect it's ability to kill quicker. Plus the arrow is lighter and flatter shooting which always helps too.

Oh, forgot to add, yes you are over thinking and including the above...you already knew that.
Just be sure to show the animals you kill this fall. :cheesy:

I was wanting 600+ grain arrow, with a little more foc, but maybe I read and think another things to much! Lol But I would love to set a arrow like that so I could use it for everything,  from elk to deer and plus maybe make the bow even more quiet! Right now I'm at 540 gr .

Unfortunately I am not a tuning wizard and can't offer suggestions as to which spine to go with.  But, I will encourage you to chase that 600+ grain arrow you want given you can get it to fly great out of your bow.  I too have had a specific goal in mind when it comes to my set up.  I have found that so much of this sport, passion, hobby, whatever it is to you, is mental.

If you're not confident in your setup then doubt creeps in and screws the whole thing up!  Find someone who can help, preferably in person.  I did and have been able to find my "setup confidence".  Don't settle for just ok.  Get what you want in a setup you can shoot well.  Then practice, practice, practice, practice, etc.

Have you factored in the weight of your fletchings yet? I was surprised at how much stiffer they made the arrow. Figure out how much they weigh, add the appropriate amount of tape at the back of the arrow and then see how they fly.
You might get your chance at an extra 50 grains yet

If the 400's with a 150 grain head fly great I would leave it alone. With the outsert you have 250 grains up front. If your chasing a 200 grain head just because you "think" you want that, I believe you are over thinking it ... your 400 set up will kill anything in North America.

Good luck this season
