Title: DIY Backcountry Elk Again 2022
Post by: Gil Verwey on June 18, 2021, 07:59:03 AM
Went on a couple of DIY Elk hunts about 10 years ago. Both myself and hunting partner had been under the weather for a while. Whenever we don't feel as healthy as we should, there is only one thing to do - backpack into the backcountry for elk! We went when we were 57 and 58, in 2022 we will be 69 and 70.   https://www.facebook.com/100029963913677/videos/pcb.527575768251216/527572598251533 (https://www.facebook.com/100029963913677/videos/pcb.527575768251216/527572598251533)

You'll be glad you did it even if it kills ya...I'm 66 and chase elk every year...killed a bear last night and it ran down into a typical north Idaho brush hole. Packed it out in one trip this morning (no hide) in my slippers (kinda)...came home and took a nap...now I'm ready to go fishing for a few days before I buy a second bear tag... :bigsmyl:

Take lots of naps and enjoy ur trip....don't forget to share with us other aging one when ya get back...
we all need encouragment

I remember your post well, Elk Paradise or something along that line, between that post and meeting Aron Snyder about the same time, I became inspired and purchased some top end Kifaru gear for me and my wife and we started camping in aways instead of at the truck. Many thanks to you!

Old hunters rock.  I just hit 57 and the elk and mountains keep me healthy and sane.
Looking forward to your stories.
Kevin .

Preparation to hunt elk keeps me working out for 6 months of the year that I wouldn't otherwise.  Living at 860 ft elevation

makes quite a shock to the system when chasing elk at 10,300 ft.  If I only hunted here, other than daily walks I would

never workout.  Still weigh the same as I did in high school 39 yrs ago.  I owe a lot to these elk.

Here is another video once we got to that camp.

Fisherick I need a refresher. I had that thread saved but it looks like it is gone.

I'm 73 now and want to go this year but waiting to see how I feel.  Lyme flares up at times so I play it by ear.  My last years I've gone were 09, 10, 14, 15, 16, and 17.  In 18 I got Ehrlichiosis from a tick that turned into sepsis and almost killed me.  In 2020 my back went out in June.  I plan on going this year but I;m not in mountain shape, I'll just hunt close to camp.
