It's been a long long time since I've posted on here, hopefully we can keep this one going.
I moved up to Alaska in October, so the the brown bears are safe until my 365 days in state are up. That said my goal this spring was to get brown bears on bait, and shoot a few black bears.
I set my first bait 2 weeks back.
Adam, Please bring us along on your adventure....little one driving the boat already too!
She's a champ, she's been on hunts in Alaska Nebraska and Wyoming. I shot a Muley doe in Nebraska, stalked her with the baby in her car seat (compound kill) was also next to me on a rifle antelope.
She was also with me while my wife shot a doe in Nebraska, we all stalked it together.
She loves ice fishing though, she's done a lot in 18 months lol.
A few more of the kiddo growing up outside.
Back to bears, what I found checking the first bait.
Can't wait to read the rest of this !
Bears!
:campfire: :clapper:
When the ears look that small, those are some big bears!
After bait one getting hammered by brown bears, we decided to put a second bait out. We are allowed 2 per person here (running 2 baits is a lot of work). I found an area off a secondary slough that seemed promising. A pic from where I tied up my boat.
Carried in a 30 gallon drum, cabled it up, an filled it with dog food, sweet feed and cooking grease, about 150lbs in total. It took 2 trips to get it dialed.
7 days later and 1367 pictures on the game camera. Here are a few
Man that is awesome! Those are some great pictures , looking forward to your hunts
Freaking awesome great photos and story thanks for sharing. :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Great thread...thanks for sharing.
I would be nervous maintaining baits with brown bears like that.
Yes, this is a great thread. I love bear hunting, I love every aspect of bear hunting so please keep on updating with your experiences.
I can't imagine being within bow shot range of a big grizzly. Wow what a rush it must be. I have been on the ground within 12 yards of a 7.5 ft black bear and that was enough. I should have shot this one.
But I did shoot this one๐
Your effort is already proving to be most rewarding.
Thanks everyone for the kind words. We are headed out tomorrow to re bait and sit. Hopefully there will be one or two bears down.
Good luck to you guys and girls!
WOW.
Great stuff keep it coming.
This is an exciting thread :scared: :scared: I agree baiting bears is not as easy as it looks, lots of hard work and sweat. When baiting was legal in WA and I was your age I used to pedal bike in on an old logging road with a 50# box of salmon heads in a waxed box strapped to my pack frame .. those were the days :jumper: :jumper:
Good luck and be safe :archer2:
Been a good few days, been seeing bears every sit. Had a good brown in two nights ago, and had blacks in the other nights. My one stand is slightly out of place, the bears are catching our wind when they come in. They stop 30 yards away and most of the time catch our wind. They are in a spot that we could just shoot them right there, but we decided to hold off until we can get them to commit to the bait. A few days back to work and back in the stand Wednesday. Going to adjust the stands Wednesday midday before the sit. Fingers crossed!
I've enjoyed this thread! Looking forward to seeing your success! :jumper:
Don't know about Alaska bears but here we take the first good shot they offer cut once they know they are being hunted they will win the bait every time and your sol :dunno: wish you the best
Honestly this spring is more learning about the brown bears. We have so many blacks here I could probably just stand by the bait, next to a tree. The only thing I've seen keep them off a bait is brown bears. The blacks have smelt me seen me holding a bag of dog food, just to return later that night.
A few pics from the stand.
This guy came in the other night.
Is that a brown bear?
Yes sir
Man. I am jealous. Those brown bears have been warned.
I can't get videos to work, but he walked by the other night.
That is one big punkin head :scared: :scared: is that a trail cam pic or were you on a sit ....
Good luck, be safe
That last ones from my phone video.
Very cool.
Loving this thread!
Great Stuff right there!!!!
Wow, thanks for sharing. Great family time for sure. :clapper:
Checked the bait today, been raining a fair amount. Had a big black bear show up, going after him tomorrow (or tonight depending on where you are or your shift)
Thanks for keeping us updated, care to share what bow your using? poundage, arrows, etc. Thanks!
I was shooting a Stalker Fxt but it was killing me tossing it in the boat. Right now I'm running a older sky 17 ilf riser with stalker short ILF limbs. I'm also setting up a blackwolf riser but still trying to figure out a limb combo. Both rigs pull 55lbs give or take.
Arrows are something I'm considering switching, I've always shot lighter arrows (450-480 total) for everything elk on down. After seeing the first few brown bears I hadn't even considered switching, after seeing a few of the big ones I'll probably bump it up a little.
The area I'm hunting is in predator control, so I won't be too picky next spring on the first tag. After I take a few browns, I'll make my decision on what's actually needed. The bears on bait make it pretty easy to shoot something heavy since the shots will be close. I just hate heavy arrows for what most of my hunting entails.
Two browns came in last night. This guy came into 5 yards. https://youtu.be/bmXhAokqjQk
Wow! That is so amazing!
Awesome video...he really wanted to come to that bait!
Did some relocation of baits to help with the winds. Also put a new bait out on another stretch of river. The baby supervised ๐
:campfire: Awesome thread!
A few big ones I forgot to post, seen them both out of the stand now.
cool pics.
is there a way to locate different to attract more boars and less sows and young'uns?
Not really, without sows your not getting the boars.
