Does anyone have an opinion of the Garmin eTrex unit?
I've used one in the past and it was ok but now I use the gps feature in my cell phone.
I have one but don't use it since changing hunting areas. It works well. I had listed it here for trade a while back but no interest.
I had one for years they work great. They have different models black and white screen and one in color. I now have the rhino which has a radio as well. I use mine all the time. I know some people use their phone with GPS but your limited to reception and battery power in some areas. GPS is nice to have in the back country especially after dark.
The GPS app in my cell phone doesn't use cell tower reception, it works like any other GPS off satellites.
What I like about the cell phone GPS is it shows your location in landscape mode and when you open the app, it shows exactly where you are and it tracks you as you walk ..
I carry a cell phone charger in my pack that is good for about 4 complete phone charges.
But any GPS unit is a good thing to have with you when miles from the road.
I'd suggest spending a few extra bucks for a good one.
I had the basic etrex 10- worked great. You will find your truck/camp/etc for sure. My son now has my unit. You can upgrade to units with more functions such as maps, but for finding your way to waypoints the 10 is as good as it gets.

Which GPS app do you use, Roy?
I also now use the gps built into my phone. I have used several apps In the past but am currently using the OnX App. Like most you need to download a map of the area you intend to hunt before going out. Especially when you hunt areas like I do with no cell signal. With map downloaded the gps will work without cell service. So far I am liking OnX.
Dave I use the Google Map app.....
It's like a helicopter is flying right above your head videoing your movements.
That's interesting, Roy, Google Maps is one of the most common apps out there, and I'm sure that most of us who have smart phones already have it. I never realized it would continue to work independently of cell reception.
Give it a try...
I used the Ettrex 10 I believe... basic yellow unit that just shows the screen and points on a blank screen. Used it for about 10 years or so and really liked it. Until I lost it earlier this year on a hunt. So I bought an upgraded etrex blue unit. Cant remember the number but it has the same basic functions as the first unit with color screen built in maps contours etc. have not used it enough to tell if it is a significant upgrade or not. But I do like the etrex
I down loaded onx maps on to my Iphone and its been a game changer. shows property lines and who owns the land. National forest / unit boundaries you can do everything on it that your GPS does and more
On x . haven't used my Garmin in 3 yrs
However Garmin makes a nice unit and I'm sure you would do well with one either as a back up to the phone or as a primary tool.
Good luck
Kevin.
I use Garmin hand held 64 ST and my phone use BaseMap awesome app.

If it's Google, then there IS a helicopter over your head. :o
Works very well
