Hi guys!
I was looking at KUIU summit refuge tent to buy for a ultralight hunting tent and was wondering if any of you gentlemen have experience with them. I really like the weight and the option to use a stove. What I dont like is the price. Also would consider other brands with similar weight and features. I already have a tipi so kifaru sawtooth is not high on the list.
Thanks in advance!
Hmmmm. What is it you don't like about the Kifaru? I had a 6-person Tepee and found it a very nice tent. Condensation was an issue in the summer, but that will be a problem with most any tent that doesn't have screen windows. No longer need the size of a 6-person so downsized to a Sawtooth. Will give it some field testing this summer before my western trip in the fall. Certainly light and easy to set up, and can cut poles in the woods to lessen the load.
The Kuiu is roughly the same footprint as the Sawtooth, just a bit smaller, but just a little over 4 feet high. The sawtooth is 6 1/2 feet tall at the tallest point. I've packed and camped in tarp tents about the size of the Kuiu. Just don't like the low height. Always crawling around on my hands and knees. I expect condensation could also be an issue with it. However, I found condensation to be an issue in the moist mid-west. Never a problem when camping in the drier mountains of the west. It is lighter and a lot less expensive than a Kifaru though. The Sawtooth has a stove jack, while the stove jack in the Kuiu is an add on, but I expect much less expensive than the Kifaru.
Afaid I'm not of much help. Good luck on your search.
The price is too steep on the sawtooth and also it is so similar functionally to a tipi I already have that is only a bit heavier and a lot roomier. Thank you for the input, I was suspecting there would be some condensation with single wall setup, so maybe I have to concider the bug net addon also.
Check out Seek outside they may have a setup you will like. The Lil' Bug Out might work for you or the Slivertip.
Check out luxe tents and apply trails. I have a five man appytrails and think it's great, far friendlier than kifaru in the price department.
Tarptent offers some really good options.
You may want to look at some backpacking tent reviews on the internet. There's plenty of info if you look.
Thank you for the input! I'm torn between the KUIU and seek outsides Lil' Bug Out base-tarp-vestibule setup. I like the modularity LBO offers but the price is steep if you want bug netting and floor from SO. I have some experience with camping in areas with lots of skeeters and would not want to sleep without a good net.
The ability to use stove and light weight are whats incommon with the two. I think the KUIU is going to be easier to setup and to use but is somewhat smaller in usable space.
SO with prefered setup is 730$ and KUIU is 520$, so a 210$ difference. Plus being non-US I have to pay a ton of tax and customs fees so the actual prices when recieving will be much higher.
Thanks
I slept under a skeeter net the entire year I was in SEA. I would think you could get a military surplus one pretty cheap. They can be a real necessity in some areas.
I've got zero experience, but I've read good things about the Stoneglacier tent
Thanks again for the input guys. I took the plunge with KUIU. Will report back when I get the tent and have some experience with it.
