Title: PBS Davis Mountains Hunt
Post by: JamesD on March 04, 2021, 10:20:22 AM
Hello All,

I recently returned from a PBS members group hunt in the Davis Mountains (West Texas). While our group only took one javelina, we all had a great time, and everyone had at least one stalk and spook occurrence on a javelina, wild pig, or Aoudad sheep. On another note, I quickly proved the value of the investment in my camping gear. The first day of the hunt brought 4-5 inches of snow and a low of 4 degrees. My 15 degree bag struggled to keep my feet warm the first night. Other than that, it handled lows in the twenties and one night at 14 degrees with no problems. There was also a tipi on site with a wood stove that three of the other participants shared as sleeping quarters. Without it, we all would have been miserable at breakfast and dinner time each day. I was impressed with the tipi and how warm it was inside, not to mention dry even with five inches of snow on the first day of the trip and another 2-3 inches in the middle of the trip. I highly recommend that anyone who isn't a PBS member already, to join, and that any current PBS members who haven't been to one of the group hunts plan to do so. I will upload photos I took during the hunt shortly.

I'm not a PBS member yet, but I think I would love to do that area hunt. Tell me more about it please, as much as you dare or care! Thank You!

I guess that those native americans must have known something about tent design : ).
You guys must been saying some very nice and polite things when THAT storm system came through.  It is really great to see that you were prepared sufficiently to "weather it out" and to be able to complete the hunt with good spirits and camaraderie.  So much planning and anticipation goes into just such a trip that a blow out is just a kick in the a..
Thanks for letting us know how it went, and providing some very illuminating pictures.  It was almost like being there...but warmer.

Nice write up and positive spin on what must have been "an exciting and challenging "experience.  Also, a thanks and a great idea for using it as a promo for PBS.

The best part of the PBS is its membership. Bubba Graves is my Alaska moose hunting partner and he's as good as you can get.

Jack, the hunt was on a 9000 acre ranch, that I have been asked not to name. The terrain was very rugged and some of the hunting areas were quite steep. Lots of animals to hunt. The January group took four javelinas and everyone had shooting opportunities. Our group had fewer shooting opportunities, but we all saw hogs, javelinas, and Aoudad sheep. It is a popular PBS hunt and it is often full one to two years in advance.

It was a backpack trip. It was a two mile hike to the campsite. Most hunting areas were another two mile hike on average to get to.

I went on the first PBS Davis mountain Hunt in 2016. Bubba is a great host and it's a great adventure in very rugged country. It's worth being a PBS member just for this trip!

Yes Bill.  A lot less cactus. Preston and Sean are spot on. Bubba was a great host and is a great guy.

I was the lucky one who found a javalina willing to stand still, watch my warning shot bounce off a rock ledge in front of it, and then take a perfectly placed arrow thru the lungs.  I love animals like that!

I also love the PBS membership hunts, and have been on them from Texas to South Dakota, and from Virginia to Alaska.  Get to hunt with my old buddies and  cool new members like James.  Fun!

The PBSers in the group photo are (l-r) James, Paul Ladner, William "Bubba" Graves (host of this awesome hunt), a homeless man who stumbled into camp looking for food (aka Bill Dunn), and me (Lucky Jeff).
