Ok
I am going on my first elk and hog hunts with trad gear this year!
58 # at 27 inch longbow... I plan on using a well tuned 650-700 arrow.
What broadheads should I use? I am not keen on 2 blade without bleeders. I have shot many Whitetail's with Muzzy phantoms... but I want something more solid... single bevel, double bevel 3 or 4 blades??? I don't like a small blade either, and I am never concerned with shooting Whitetail's, as I think most any broad head will do. But these are bigger critters !!
I am a 3-blade fan. Look at the Woodsman and the VPA. Both are great heads.
Just my 2 cents worth.
What he said.
I would also add Zwickey Delta 4 blades... if you can find them.
Best of luck on your hunt....we expect to here about your hunt and see pics. :readit:
Snuffer, VPA, Grizzly Instinct, Woodsman all are good heads at 150-190 grains.
:coffee: :campfire: :archer2:
Wensel woodsmans Or zwickey no mercy's or ace standard. Or grizzly's or Grizzly Bruins. Lol. Another words. Shoot what y like :biglaugh: personally I'd go with the no mercy's but I do have some Bruins in order so excited to see them.
Non vented 3 blade vpa's have worked well for me on elk. Shooting a 65# widow. Also killed with slick trick viper trick, pretty solid little heads.
I like the 3 blade 175gr VPA's,but got me some 175gr right bevel grizzly's Im going to try,no other reason but just want to try them out.....
Hmmmm.... all good suggestions, I'm watching to much YouTube broadhead destruction and single bevel videos... lol
Max, heading to Colorado in September for the second time, planning on using Snuffers on some Doug Fir shafts from Surewood. I talked myself out of using my trad equipment 2 years ago, had a bull at 33 yards and could not tell if he was legal or not, so no shot. I have a Northern Mist 3 piece Skanee on the way 55# @ 28" that is going with me this fall...live and learn, trust my first instinct. Good luck with your hunts.

Stick bender... I just got back into Trad....after a many year layoff... too much work, not enough hunting time etc... I felt I was missing something... I had bought and sold so many bows off the Tradgang classifieds for years.... it then i stopped and hadn't been in this site in at least 7 years. even deer hunting had become mundane, and I wasn't enjoying it anymore. I never shot my wheel bow except a day to make sure it was on, then went and killed a decent buck and put it away. Now I am back committed, and loving it more then ever.I have improved and worked on my shooting and use it as my meditation time as well. So goodbye Mattews! This is my best group with my new bow at 21 paces and first Woodies!

I had about the same set up as you are planning on and I used a tuffhead single bevel and the bull I shot didn't live for more than 10 -15 seconds. There are a lot of great heads out there that's just my 2 cents.
Tuffhead 300 gr glue on will work. These stay sharp easier than zwickeys.
VPA 3blade, :archer2:
A 250 gn VPA 3 Blade backed by a 100 gn insert have done quite well for me on larger game.
Without trying to step on any toes or offend anybody ...............
In the beginning, there was Howard Hill and the Howard Hill broadhead .................
just sayn'
The only way to bump weight on broadheads for wood arrows is woodie weights, unless you just want a few more grains them #6 shot pellets are 2.2 grains each. Drop them in a hot BH and tamp them in.
Wudstix: looking at your bow weights and thinking about bumping broadhead weights, I'm always challenged finding heavy spines to enable a heavy broadhead with bows over 65#.
If you don't mind me asking, where do you reliably find shafts spined 85# or higher. I've occasionally seen them at Surewood and Forrester has some in hardwoods - but they get really heavy with a heavy broadhead. I'm limping along on my last 2 dozen laminated birch from Allegheny Mountain (now closed).
Any suggestions appreciated!
Check with Ted Fry at Raptor Archer.... he's been a Sponsor of Tradgang for years and has been making wood arrows for decades. And he sells shafts. I'm sure he can take care of you.
Matt; traded for several dozen. Some Hickory that was just laying around, Cedar and Hemlock that was spined 90-95#. Found some that push 190-250 grain heads very well. Forrester woodshafts is hard to beat for Red Balau, but 29" raw shafts are 660 grains!!! Sent you a PM.

With your bow specs I would shoot whatever you want. Trad gang has several sponsors that have plenty of quality product to choose from. Personally I would do the z delta 4 , wwoodsman, or VPA. Big open holes are nice to have on game animals. Good luck. Start training for your elk hunt now.
I've never had trouble getting heavy spines from Surewood when I wanted them, you might reach out directly.
Based on what you said my suggestion for elk would be a Zwickey Eskimo 4 blade. They penetrate way better than a multi-blade should and are tough. Probably have to trade or scour classifieds for them though. The Eclipse 4 blade would be as good or better but pricier.
Thank you all
I have it narrowed down to... vpa 3 blade, deep six with bleeders, eclipse , abowyer single bevel, Wensel woodmans, and some Zwickeys If i can find them and possibly some single bevel centaurs that I only have 3 of... :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Anyone ever use tricar tip replace type heads? I know Muzzy was invented for trad bows?
Check these out:

Okie Dokie
Yep I have seen them to.... lol.... wondering if they are worth the $$
Max. I have used muzzy for trad. Only deer though.
Those iron will heads don't have the best angle of attack. Too stubby. Way to many other great heads out there that do. I also don't like trocar tips.
Best of luck.
:clapper:^^^This^^^ I have to agree with S.Sapde on these
There are many heads that will work with your combo. I can only speak from experience with woods and aluminum. Wood will tend towards heavier arrows and whatever COC point you go with look at its track record. We all have our favorites from our own experience.
