Title: Funny how things change.
Post by: Pine on January 28, 2021, 12:32:54 PM
Years back I would not shave so my face would be naturally camouflaged.
When I would get to where I was going to sit, I would take my glasses off and my dark knit hat pulled over my ears I was good to go.
My natural hair color "used to be" dark brown.
I discovered by accident while wading streams while running my turtle trap line that if I wore a dark colored long sleeve shirt, the deer flies would not bother me.
Guess what, I eventually out grew that trick.
It seems that deer flies are very attracted to Silver White Hair.
So guess what I can't do while deer hunting anymore.
Yeah, not shaving turns the light on like a beacon.
Guess that's why face vails were invented.   :laughing:

Ditto! I used to have a full head of hair to go along with my facial scruff.  Now the hair is mostly gone so I keep what's left real short for that military look.  The beard has turned mostly white and while I keep it trimmed during the off-season, I let it grow from August 1 until I'm finished hunting around Christmas (my wife likes it trimmed for Christmas photos).  I haven't shaved in about 17 years or so.

I used to tell my wife that I needed the beard as camouflage, but that excuse quit working when it turned mostly white (I told her once that a white tail is a deer's warning signal).

Then I told her that I needed the beard to keep my face warm while hunting, but now I mostly hunt in nice weather and wear a warm face gaiter on colder days.

So I started telling her wearing a beard made me 'feel like a man' which quit holding water when I turned 65 and officially became a Social Security collecting 'Old' man.

In the last few years I just fess up and tell her I'm too lazy to shave.  Even though she knows I'm a busybody and always hustling around doing something, she accepts that excuse . . . for now.

So Dale, while I cannot actually concur that Michigan deer flies are attracted to silver hair, I do know they think a shaved head is a mighty good target.  I feel your pain brother!   Never go into the forest without a hat!

My husband was a friend of Tony Dean, Tony told him that if one wears a sky-blue color that ticks will not be near as much of a problem if any at all. We tried it pants and shirt, no ticks.  With his white beard, he may not wear any camo when deer hunting, but always a a camo head net.  Now he is talking about going after spring turkeys with his sky blue pants and shirt and wants me to go along.  Then someone told us that turkeys are not afraid of light blue. How can that be true?

Blue is a natural color in turkey heads.  Hunter's safety always teaches not to wear blue as other hunters my catch a glimpse and think it's a turkey.

You're in Michigan.  Half the season no flies and great snow camo

The ticks can be horrendous around here during spring turkey season.  Good point about the blue, even on private land we have had issues with trespassing 'run and gun' knuckleheads.  I think that I would rather go crappie hunting this coming spring.

My older brother always delighted in telling people that my beard was extremely important to me, because  it was the only thing that kept me from being  a bald faced liar.  Guilty as charged!

Well I always knew my bald head needed covering, But thanks dude, now I have to consider my beard as well, and half the reason I give for having it is as cammo. :biglaugh:
