Title: Traditional Bowhunting Starter Kit
Post by: Whitetail_Maniac1105 on January 05, 2021, 01:47:27 PM
I am new to this forum and I want to start shooting a traditional bow. I would like to get feed back on what a good starter bow is, arrows, and anything else I need to get started. Interested in a recurve. Looking to start hunting next season so I can practice endlessly this coming summer. Thanks for your help ahead of time.

Welcome to the forums! For gear, you should take a look at 3 Rivers Archery. They have a "new to trad archery" tool that takes the info you put in and gives you a new bow package that gives you pretty much everything you need to get started. For about $430, you'll get a takedown recurve (if it's not a Samick Sage, it looks a lot like one) with the weight of limbs appropriate to your archery experience, string, stringer, string silencers, quiver, arm guard, shooting glove, 6 carbon arrows, field points, and broadheads. The arrows and points/broadheads will be close to what you would need for tuning purposes as far as spine, length, and point weight go. You might be able to find all of this cheaper by piecing stuff together, but 3 Rivers will take care of you!

Besides that, I would suggest looking up resources on how to shoot a traditional bow (there are plenty here!), maybe consider getting a shooting tab as well as a shooting glove and see what you like better, don't be afraid to start shooting close to the target (5 yards or less), and before you fall down the rabbit hole of arrow tuning, make sure your form is spot on.

Don't be afraid of asking questions here and good luck with it! There's nothing quite like taking game with a trad bow!!

Welcome to tg.

Ty just above gave you some good advice.

What part of Ohio are you in?

Check around your area for traditional archery clubs, also there may be guys in here who live close to you, they would welcome you with open arms and help you on your journey.

Don't be shy in here, ask anything you want.

Check the 2 links below.

Might help to have some background information. Any prior experience with archery, hunting, etc?

Hi and welcome, if you're just starting out I wouldn't get a high end bow, not yet wink wink.
Look at antique or thrift stores for an inexpensive bow.
I just picked up a stemmler Turk recurve at our local shop. 30$.  It's in great used shape.
You can upgrade as your knowledge grows.
Give us your draw length if you know.
Good luck. Kevin

You may have already read it, but the greenish link towards the top of the main page that starts with INFO, is a good place to start as well.

Welcome to our campfire, Noah!!!!!  :archer: :archer: :campfire: :archer: :archer:

One thing to remember... The only "stupid" question, is the one you didn't ask!!
With the folks here, you should have a pretty good handle on things by fall...

Coaching is huge.

The trad bow may be simple, but shooting it isn't as easy as it looks!

Tom Clum (Solid archery mechanics) has a fantastic online course- wish I would have started with it. I'm learning a ton, going to take some work to un-do some bad habits, but it will pay dividends down the road!

Good luck  :archer:
