Title: New bow/ New arrow advice
Post by: valleysniper on December 12, 2020, 09:17:15 PM
I just received a Black widow PSA, it is 49# @ 30" and I draw 29 1/4, so I'm guessing about 46# or so. I tried some 500s cut to 30 1/2 that I used in my Blacktail which was 49# at 28. These arrows show stiff. I have a 100 gr brass insert and have tried a 125, 150 and 175 gr tip, still to stiff. Any ideas. I would like to try some small diameter arrows but can't break the bank trying to get even close...Gary

Hmmm.  If it's 49@30, it's probably closer to 48#@29 1/4.  Regardless, the 500s should work.  On what are you basing your assessment of stiff?  What distance are you shooting and are the arrows impacting left or just hitting tail right?

Could be something in your form.  A loose anchor and/or pluck will often throw the arrows to the side. I'd give it a few days before looking for different arrows, again going through the different point weights. Even try 200 grain or heavier points if you have them.

The arrows are flying down range tail left, they got alot better after I switched to the 175gr points. I think my form is decent. Ill keep playing

Right handed shooter tail left arrow flight indicates a weak spine

Well then, I guess I got the answer to my question. I think that widow has alittle more performance than my Blacktail recurve.  It is quicker just by watching the arrow. Maybe ill try a lighter point weight or move up to 400s

Also is the widow more center shot than the blacktail?

That could be. I might have to check into the centershot...Gary

Will the Small diameter arrows  make it even more center shot?

I asked that in another post, it sound as if the smaller diameter will help with that

Widows are known for being cut past center and most guys seem to need a heavier spine than usual. I don't have any advice on your arrow selection except to say 65-70# woodies should work well.

I'm with Orion, if it helped to go 175, try 200 or 250  unless I misunderstood you...

I shoot a Black Widow PTF, 46#@28" and I draw 27'5". Tried 500s with my and they shot weak. A 29" 400 spine bare shafted great for me and shoots well with a pretty wide weight range of points. I think that the Widows may be cut a bit more past center than the Blacktails. Good luck with your new bow.

Seems like a 400 spine with 225 up front works pretty good. Will take some tuning but I think I almost got it
