Title: Picture of my Arizona Coues buck
Post by: azhunter on September 08, 2020, 09:27:05 AM
Had such a great time hunting and in camp with two of my best best friends. The area where we hunt a lot had been burned by a recent wildfire so we did some scouting in a unit that we had some experience in but didn't know that well. A friend had told me about a general area to scout but it didn't pan out to look as good as I had hoped. We ended up scouting a different area and found some great Coues deer country. We new it was going to be a good hunt but had no idea that we would see as many big bucks as we did. The second day of the hunt I was sitting a blind with my friend and I was able to watch him take his biggest Coues deer to date. He made a terrific shot and I knew he wouldn't go far and thought I heard him crash but we gave it an hour anyway. Just being there with him and sharing that experience meant so much to me. I was with him while he shot his last two Coues bucks and this one was by far his best buck. I am not going to add a picture because he was not using a trad bow. It looks very similar to my buck. My friend left to take his buck to the taxidermist and headed back home. My other friend and I hunted another day but he got a call from work and had an emergency and needed to go back home and so I headed back to take him home. I headed back up a couple days later but didn't get to hunt because I had truck problems and had to come home. I didn't get my truck back for three days. We headed back up and it was obvious things had changed due to a recent storm and a decent amount of rain in the area. Did not see near as many deer but my buck came into the water hole right around 1:00. He was a wise buck and was very hesitant to come in. We could see him coming down the hill but lost him in the trees and it took him a while but he circled and came around the back side of the water hole. He didn't like something and he went back up the hill. About 45 minutes later he came back down to another spot. We couldn't see him until he he was 3-4 yards from the edge of the brush/trees. He backed out and didn't come in.  Maybe 30 minutes later he decided to come in straight across the water hole which was the worst place he could have come in which meant he would be facing directly at me with no shot until he turned to leave the water hole. I have seen them too many times quit drinking and quickly turn 180 degrees and walk away. I was fortunate to get an opportunity as he turned broadside to walk away. He took a step forward and ducked as I shot so my arrow hit slightly back and higher than I wanted but at a good angle forward. We waited a couple hours because I was afraid that maybe I got only one lung. Come to find out the arrow had gone through both lungs and the broadhead was stuck in the opposite side shoulder bone. Come to find out the buck had only gone 75 yards and died quickly.  It was so great to share the experience with my friend. This is my biggest Coues buck. I was using my favorite bow a TimberGhost black pearl G3SS 42# at my draw and a single bevel grizzly broadhead. Having dropped down in bow weight the last couple years due to a nagging injury I sure appreciate the efficiency of the TimberGhost with those large hook static limbs. I really believe it is comparable to having 5 more pounds in bow weight.

Congratulations.  I hunted those guys for 20 some years down in the Huachuca's. Bow or rifle that's one the finest I've ever seen taken. With a trad bow that is absolutely amazing.  Good job!  I sure do miss that place.

Thanks for all the comments. I was thinking today that it is all the things that lead up to the hunt that makes hunting so special. Shooting your bow and fletching and tuning arrows, sharpening broad heads, making plans and scouting with your friends. Texting back and forth during the scouting season. Making trips up with hunting partners to set blinds. Sitting around the campfire at night during the hunt. I don't think the hunt would be near as enjoyable without these other components. I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to take such a nice Coues deer. It's not often that you get one that size in stickbow range.
