My Grandfather preserved these years ago, and I was wondering if there is anything I can use them for for bowhunting.
Any ideas?

I can think of a couple times hunting under oak trees on a windy day where one of those would have come in handy as a helmet :knothead:
My grandpa made slate calls for turkeys out of them.
I've seen hip quivers made from them.
You can stitch suede in the openings and at the front make a tube of suede with a draw string.
And attach a shoulder strap or neck strap.
Would be kinda like a medicine bag to carry things like spare string and small impliments.
Cap on bottom of quiver for decoration
The little one at the top is a box turtle. I have seen turkey slate calls made from them.
I have a possibles bag made from a large shell. A good friend made it for me.[attachment=1]
Those shells are beautifully preserved.
Dave.
Those look great, your grandfather had a nice collection.
I have also seen slate calls made out of turtle shells.
Good stuff guys!!!...keep it coming...
How cool are they!
Those turtle shells look really neat Terry.
We'd get hung, drawn, quartered, shot and blown up if caught with turtle shells over here. Prohibited wildlife products I believe they would be called.
Very interesting Possibles bag there wood carver 2, nice.
Would like to see the Turkey call made from the shell too.

I saw a cool hip quiver made out of a snapping turtle shell once. Ive got some shells from buddies that noodle for them. Id like to put together a hip quiver made out of one.
I mean, the first thing that comes to my mind is cutting into one of them and making an awesome custom bow quiver with the shell as the broadhead cover. That would sure beat the plastic or leather quivers, no?
Yep...I thought of that right off on the smaller terrrapin.
Pretty good ideas, nice shells.
I have a buddy who also makes turkey calls out of them mounting different chert and jasper slabs to the bottom of the shells. He also carves a turtle head on one end of the striker and stores it where the turtles head would normally be.
Not mine but 2 cool ideas

They look great just the way they are, nature hard to improve upon, that said I do like what the guys above have done....
I made a slate call for my pops. I ordered the slate from a supply website along with a striker. Works well.
Attach handle, feathers, beads, and some fooferall and make a ceremonial American Indian rattle for your pre-hunt ceremony.
Ive often wondered if turtle shells could be used as limb tips or handle inlays on a riser?

For the hunt:
- slate call
- pouch/possibles bag
- bottom of a tubular back/side quiver
- make the hood for a bow quiver or GFA side quiver out of one of the larger ones
- you could use them as inlay work for knife handles, limb tips on a custom bow, and POSSIBLY overlays at the limb bolts on a 3-piece bow
For the home:
- add them to a pedestal mount to build the scene to include your him ;-)
- native American styled rattle for decoration
- make a bowl from one to put your keys/phone/wedding ring/etc in at night or have a woodworker build you a custom wood box and use the shell as the lid
- incorporate it into a bookend to prop up all your Traditional Bowhunter Magazines or bowhunting books
- sit it on the shelf with a photo of him to remind you of him
- If you wind up cutting one up, save the small pieces and make little dangly earrings for your woman. When ground thin they let the light show through with a beautiful marbled look and can be polished up nicely. My wife is not a hunter by any means but has gotten lots of compliments from earrings that I've made her with animal ivories, bone, and even fishing lures over the years from folks. It can be done in a classy and feminine way for sure.
I found this on another site and thought it was pretty slick...I'd share the link to the build-along..but I don't think that is allowed..
