Title: Dumb question
Post by: tmattson on March 31, 2020, 12:47:45 PM
This may seem like a really dumb question, can you take a LB (its a low end one), and add coatings of something, some kind of clear finish, to increase poundage a bit (5-8 pounds)? Its scuffed up a bit in a few spots so not worried about appearance. If yes, is it safe, and what material would one use and how to apply (brush)?

I doubt you could add a finish that would increase the poundage. Is it a straight limb longbow? If so you might be able to cut 1" off each limb tip, reshape it and increase the weight by about that much. What kind of longbow is it? Pics?

Samack Sage 68 inch LB.
I figured such, no desire to start hacking and cutting - LOL

If it's something you really don't care about, don't like in it's current state, and don't currently shoot, why not start cutting and hacking?  Worst case scenario is you end up with something you don't care about, don't like in the new state, and don't shoot.  :biglaugh:

Sounded like you didn't care about it so I made a suggestion. You could sell it and buy one in the weight you want.

No magic finishes; only one magic backing-- real animal sinew.

Thanks all,
Not exactly a handy craftsman, hence the comment about sawing away on it. Backside of bow is black fiber glass so I thought maybe I could order a can of it and apply a few coatings with a brush, top off with a finish. Was just a thought.

You were thinking about ordering a can of fiberglass?

Measure down an inch or 1.5" on each nock and cut in new nocks.  Tape & Clip the ends with a hacksaw and it'll probably be pretty good to go. Not hard. Any tiller questions just ask here. Easy Peasy.

It might work!  Getting sinew to stick to fiberglass is another subject altogether!!

If you are lucky maybe you could trade for a bow with more draw weight.. Most of us end up dropping a few pounds of draw weight as we age.. what exactly do you have and what are you looking for?
