A Javi Hunt has been on my bucket list for a long time. Thx to a fellow tradganger Scott (swamprabbit) I had the opportunity to go with him and a couple other Trad shooters on my first Javi Hunt and it did not disappoint!!
16,000 acres of low fence hunting in south central Tx. It was a bow hunters dream place! We set up on feeders for hogs in the mornings and evenings and spot and stalked Javis during the day. Man was it ever fun!! I was fortunate to get my limit of two on the first day.
Missed a hog the second morning when I hit my top limb on the blind when I shot. :banghead:
All in all it was an Awesome hunt with some really great and like minded guys!
Couldn't have been a better experience!
Well I guess were still having issues with Tapatalk.
Trying to figure out how to post pics from my phone..
Look at this thread and if you still can't text them to me and I'll put them up.

Thx Gary, I tried that before with no luck. I assume it's because it's on my phone and not a pc
Let's try this
Thank you Gary!
Little big because I didn't screenshot them first I guess.
You're welcome!
Also, congratulations again. To you and your fellow hunters.
Great job buddy!!
Congrats again Randy!!! Javies are God's gift to a stalking bowhunter!!!!!!

Who did you hunt with? My former outfitters lost the ranch they hunted, and my wife and I want to go again. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Congratulations !!! Javelina hunting is a blast. Looking forward to it again soon.
Nice going!
Congrats again Randy.
Looks like a fun hunt that I'd like to do someday! Congrats
Awesome !!!
Spot and stalk dream animal. My experience is that their sight is less acute than hogs. If you stop moving you all but disappear to them, but their noise and ears make up for that.

ATTABOY!
Way to go sir!
Congrats Randy.
Sounds like an awesome trip.
Nice job Randy

I can make that happen whenever your ready!
Randy I know that had to have been a blast. I have always wanted to get a Javi. I saw a mount of one in the Bass Pro down around San Antonio and have wanted one ever since.
Awesome job, Randy!
Great job, Randy.

SlowBowKing:NOT !!!!! Cover prepped carcass with peanut butter. Bury in hole with coals underneath... slow cook for 8-10 hours then cover hole with dirt from hole and leave site. Go to Micky D's and have a quarter pounder.

Nice! How are javis for eating?
I haven't had any yet. A couple of the guys I hunted with have eaten some of theirs and they said it's good. And I trust them!
I have recruited some Hispanic friends of ours to make tamales out of mine. I will let you know how they are sometime next week.
But.... from what I have seen the guys that don't like cleaning them say they are nasty. The people that don't mind cleaning them say they are good. So ...
Woo Hoo and great shooting! They are cool looking little dudes. Been in TX for 6 yrs and still haven't chased them. That needs to change.
They can be Great or Horrible tablefare. Truly depends on how they are handled IMHO. If you touch the the hair then touch the meat the musk and oils transfer to the meat and it is all but ruined. The trick I was taught is to :
1. Wear gloves.
2. Use one knife to start the process of making the initial cuts down belly, legs and around legs .
3. Change gloves and knife and skin only touching the inside of the skin.
4. Avoid touching or cutting into the large gland on top of the back.
5. Meat can be soaked in solution of 1tablespoon baking soda per quart of water for 24 hrs. Rinse prior to cooking.
Enjoy!
Congrats and agree w Some thoughts above on eating them as they are just fine if they are handled well. We cooked them in hog camp in tx and they were a little tough but just fine
Ok y'all, after Processing I ended up with 2 whole front shoulders, 2 whole hind quarters, 2 packages of backstrap and tenderloins, and 7 dozen tamales.
And the tamales are AWESOME!!!
I have no idea why people say javelina is bad table fare. My only conclusion is that possibly people are not handling them properly when cleaning them.
Tamales are good no matter what they are made of.
Yep, tamales are good. Any way you can cook that meat so you cover up the taste of javi is OK. Just too much trouble to cover the javi taste up when I have a freezer full of already great tasting deer and pronghorn!!!!
And I know how to handle them properly just fine. I just don't like the way the meat tastes!!!

If we ever meet at a TBoT shoot you are welcome to shoot one of mine.
Thanks, Mr. Cook, if this lock down ever lifts.

Didn't mean to step on your toes there Bisch.
Another update...
I just smoked a backstrap and it is every bit as good as any backstrap I've ever had. :dunno:
One thing I always do is age my game meat for at least a week. I keep it ice and keep the water drained off daily. Maybe that makes a difference, maybe not.
You didn't step on my toes. It's just every time I tell someone who likes it, they always mention that maybe I don't know how to properly dress or care for the meat. Simple fact is, I just don't like it. It's ok if you and Scott, or anybody else does like it.
Now get to work on my recurve limbs....................please!!!

Good things come to those who wait!😉
I don't care for it either. But I have a buddy who has asked me a couple of times if I'm ever gonna go kill one again because he and his family liked the ones I've brought back. I may never kill another one but if I do I'll call him on the way home.
Nice!!!!
Congrats!!!
I'm with Bisch on this one I just don't like the taste and I cleaned them right . We've shot quite a few and now when we see them while hog hunting we seldom pursue . They are kind of a pretty animal ... from the distance. They were fun to sneek up on great for the trad bow, good for you on your success.
Congratulations, Randy!!!! I'm glad you had a good time (and a little jealous). That pic with the Javi in the back of the truck with your logo on top of it is AWESOME!
