I just got home. I blew off Big Bend,Terry.

I'll start trying to get some photos up.

I'm guessing Jack was the comedy act  and could have been a little of me mixed in there :biglaugh:

I have been on countless  Group hunts, But this one was the biggest riot I have ever attended. I laughed so hard my stomach muscles were cramping the Whole week.  Everyone was part of the act.

Some mornings were so funny it was hard to leave camp to go hunting...... And one morning we didn't go hunting till 10:00 because of!!!

One guy in camp is in the entertainment buiz  and he said he could have sold that material for $20,000!!!

Well as Terry has already alluded to it was a great camp this year. We had people from all parts of the country, and we all got along great. Laughing, cutting up,and drinking! We did do some hunting also as the picture above shows. Everybody was happy about my kill, but Terry could really tell how excited I was when I got back to camp.

Jacob the guide at the camp turned me onto this spot where the hogs were coming in he thought before dark. So I went to sit in some old cattle pens with a water trough that was split between two lots of the pens. I put some 2x6 across the shoot in order to stand on and shoot over. Well the first day I saw a big black and white sow come in with about 8 piglets, she also had a young fifty pound hog with her. She didn't come in the front of the pens which would have given me a perfect shot. She went all the way around, and squeezed under the gate to get a drink. I couldn't get a shot because of the divider. It was funny while she got her front feet up on the trough to get a drink the piglets were trying to suck. I would not have shot her anyway because the piglets were too little. I would have shot the little fifty pounder with them though. I thought when they get done they will come out,and go to the corn, but they just left off to my east :banghead:  I sat there probably another hour, and here come another group of them from the south. There was about 8 hogs in this group, but the wind was blowing right toward them and they never would come in :banghead:

So I go out there the next day,and they had come back, and finished up the corn after I left. I walked around, and jumped a pretty good size hog that was bedded up while I was out stump shooting.

So fast forward to that afternoon. I drive out there, and dump some more of the molasses corn that Jacob had made up,and there was a coyote there getting a drink as I drove up.

There was going to be a cold front blowing in that night so I had all my cold weather gear. I get in the shoot, and started to get cold as the wind was blowing hard. I went to sit on the ground by the water trough because there was some stuff piled up on the other side of the fence that served as a wind block. Well just about dark I hear this really weird sound, and couldn't tell what it was. I see a glimpse of white, and realize it was the sow, piglets, and the little whatever it was. It was the piglets making the noise I heard. They came around the same way they had the day before, and came under the gate. So I was 2 yards away from them while they drank, that was very exciting! I could have shot over the fence as they left at the little fifty pounder, but didn't want to do the old Texas heart shot thing. They did the same thing they had done the day before, and left to the east, and didn't come to the corn. I knew however they hadn't winded me this time because I was so close to them.

I sit there another hour, and then got up and got myself back into the cattle shoot where I could shoot over the corn. The wind had died down after it got dark, but the temperature was dropping fast. I think it was a little after nine when I saw hogs coming in,and running everywhere. I rigged up a deal at the house for my green light that didn't end up working at all,and was too late to do anything else. So I saw three run up to this tire that had the corn in it. I put the light in the left side of my mouth turned it on pulled back and let it go.

Hogs went everywhere! I didn't know how good or bad the shot was because I dropped the light and went to cussing. I get it picked up,and I'm shining around and could see one hog off in the distance running in circles. More were coming up to the corn, but I thought I better see if I got the one,and not try on another one when other people could come and hunt there.

I had to bang on some metal around there to get the hogs to leave that were there grunting and growling in the bushes :scared: So when I was fairly satisfied they had left I got done, and made a run for the liquid cattle feeder, and jumped on it. I'm a little scared of hogs :o As I got over that way I saw my arrow, and thought I had missed, but when I picked it up,I realized there was blood on it,and the tip broke off in the hog. I shined my light around and could see what I thought was a hog,but I waited until I saw it move. I got down and got the other side of it,and put another arrow in it. It let out a squeal, and I ran for cover. I could hear it weezing, and figured that had done the deal.

I took off with my light, and had made a perfect second shot. I loaded her up,and headed back to camp. I got to camp, and Terry,Joe,and Jacob were there. They all congratulated me,and like I said before I could tell Terry could tell how excited I was.

Jacob showed me a neat way to skin them. We found the broadhead high in the off side shoulder, but he also found the entrance of the first shot. It was low and tight to the shoulder. So I ended up making a better shot than I thought. The way he skinned it we didn't open it up so we didn't see exactly where it went.

Yeah Terry I'm bad at posting the pics and resizing them so I always post the pic first and see if it takes and then do the story. It's weird when you do the story, and then you can't get the pic to post :bigsmyl:

I'm not greedy,so after I killed the hog I thought someone else could go over there, and get a chance at them.

I did do some walking around the next day though, and made a good shot on this jack rabbit. I skinned him,and I think I'll try to tan the hide.

I spent the remainder of my time trying to get a shot on a coyote. I took my carcass and tried to wait for some to come in and get a shot, but they hadn't found it by the time we left.

As Terry said it was one of the best most memorable hunts I've been on. We all got along and had a great time.

I'll let Terry post up a pic of the rabbits. He has a really cool pic of that.

Buddy I was pulling 52 pounds with the Ace. I have to say I didn't get a pass through, but it did the job.

I've been looking for the broadhead and this might be it.

Joe and I got on javies everyday....even though the season was closed during part of the hunt.  Those things are a blast to watch and mess with. Unfortunately Javie season closed after the 1st day, but Jacob is going to try and rectify that next year.  Hus season was moved forward due to dive season.

It sure was fun having them around for our amusement anyway....and if the season would have been open, we'd have some extra pics.....

And as Rick said, I would love to have everyone back next year.

More in a bit, and a little 'Hope' story......

We had some sparse action on hogs due to these mammoth articulated trucks running through the property all over dropping syzmic monitors.  These trucks were just short of tanks running over misquite like weeds.  Darndest thing I ever seen.....maybe someone took pics....I should have.

I went back to a pit I'd hunted the day before and one of those trucks had ran between my pit and the water tank.  This activity had a serious effect on daytime hunting.

Hope is the right-handed model of the "Hope and Faith" pair of bows that have a pass around life before being auctioned off for St. Jude's Hospital -- I think this pair of bows will be in the 2021 auction.

Terry shot the bow very well. I was there to witness both rabbit shots, and they were right on the money. The bow is fast and very quiet. It is 50 pounds at 28 inches and Terry was shooting 585 grain arrows.

Be on the lookout for this bow in the 2021 St. Jude's auction. It is a terrific bow.

By the way, the rabbits were grilled with a custom, one-of-a-kind grilling sauce that Terry whipped up -- They were excellent.

I liked walking around, and shooting in the mid morning. Some of the old not used any more pads had some neat stuff laying around.

There were four Coke bottles, and one pretty old Dr. Pepper bottle. I think the 7Up is fairly old too. I can't tell what that green barrel looking one is. The others are some not so old Gatorade.

I like doing that sort of thing, and might get Jacob to turn me on to some more old sites if he knows where any are.

Those green area lights are from Kill Light. They have a three-position switch. There is OFF, and then there is ON -- and between there is a setting that has the light come on a bit dim at dark and then build up slowly to full brightness. They take 4 C-cell batteries and will provide light all night long for well over a week.

They are designed with rings and magnets on the back for mounting them on the bottom of a standard feeder. With a little wire or para cord it is easy to hang them if there is no feeder around.

They really work well.

Those lights work well.  We had a couple munted to the bottom of some feeder boxes but that gives you a very limited area lit up.  That's a nice innovation the way you set it up.

Blano.....that is a green light that lights up the area for night hunting... .comes on at dusk all by itself.

Joe was kind enough to let me borrow his ....I'm going to get a couple my self for next year.

Sounds like a fun hunt!
Our United Bowhunters of Illinois Traditional group was in Texas about the same time. Good weather and lots of pigs. We killed 7 the first week and I hunted with a first time longbow hunter from England who killed a nice boar the second week. I had dozens of pigs and sows come in to baits and in stalking range those two weeks that I passed on. I killed a nice smaller size boar and little larger boar that should eat just fine also. Mine were daytime kills.  Had a 250# plus boar come in 3 times and never offered a good enough shot. Can't wait for next year!

Here's one of mine. I shot him from the ground at 5 yards, when he came in to check out a sow and pigs that were crunching a few grains of corn I had thrown out in front of me. Went 30 yards after hit by a razor sharp Tuffhead on a Sitka spruce shaft from a 45# longbow. [attachment=1]

Looks like a lot of fun.   That's a bucket list hunt for me,  not many feral pigs up this way.

The kill light Terry was using was round, is there another shape available now?

I tried the larger kill lights and sometimes the larger hogs shied away or wouldn't come into the light. I had better luck with a green headlamp strapped to my bow. I waited in the dark until the pigs were at the bait and eating. I then turned on the light while aiming it up in the air. I slowly brought the light down and held it as steady as possible. One or two pigs out of several groups I tried this on were nervous, but came back in. After a while with the green light, I turned on a brighter white light without spooking the pigs. I didn't shoot any with lights this trip, but could see well enough to pick a good spot.

Here is a picture of part of one group that came in just after dark. There were 2 decent boars and 2 sows including a huge pregnant sow with this group. None ran away when I turned on the light. There was a large boar that kept circling and growling that never came in. [attachment=1]

I have a Streamlight Trident Buckmaster model headlamp that has two levels of green light and then a bright white.  Green has not spooked pigs and white is good to kayak down the river.  Green light for sure works on pigs and to some extent deer.
