I am most likely going to order a predator recurve. I have heard lots of guys comment on the big grip. I generally like a mid to high wrist grip and like them big. My absolute favorite so far is an old Browning cobra. It's fatter than a bear but similar and has a tighter thumb web radius if l recall. I specifically like the small radius so my hand "wedges" up and could literally not go anywhere else and l don't have to grip at all.
Would any of you be able to speculate on if the predator bow is similar to the cobra?
If it's way different maybe I'll just send them the cobra and see if they can duplicate it.

Actually any insight into grips would be appreciated. Just going by looks l've always thought l would like the Black widow asbell grip.

I have tried a lot of different ones from traditional recurve, old recurve, classic longbow, and a variety of high and low wrist. I have big hands and found the classic longbow uncomfortable. Finally tried a Big Stick Assassin and Bob's grip is about perfect in my opinion. It is chunky and has a nice flat for the contact point in my palm. After shooting these, nothing else feels as good. Take a look at his website for reference but I am fairly certain his is similar to a few other bowyers I have been seeing recently.
I have had good luck sending a drawing of my hand to the bowyer and having the grip made as large as possible to fit.

I shot one of the old Browning Cobras for years and still do from time to time. I love that grip and have always tried to find a bow with a similar grip profile with no luck. I will say the closest I've felt lately is on the Stalker bows. The way those grips fill your hand really made me think of my Cobra.
I know people who have built up their own grips with something like Bondo or something better suited to wood. They seem happy with the result, and of course can sand and shape until they get exactly what they want.
I have owned both of the bows you mention and most Predators had that wide grip with the arrow almost riding to low for me [like Fred Bear I guess]
I did have one that Ron P. had sized smaller and liked it alot
The Browning Cobra along with Nomad, Explorer, Fury had that typical grip you describe I think not as high wrist but comfy and hand filling
.
I just bought a Martin Dream Catcher that came with a custom grip, its a larger full grip with a very slight palm swell which reminds me of a Asbell style grip. I have not had a chance to shoot it or tinker with it as of yet. But I can tell its a huge difference from my other Martins that have a high narrower grips with a mild thumb rest in relation to a Fedora style grip. I was raised shooting my dads Browning Cobras and Stalker which had a similar grip without the thumb rest. A matter of fact I almost just bought a Browning Cobra off vintage bows. org because of those memories. I also remember my brother telling my dad that he didn't like the grip on his new Black Widow because it was so uncomfortable. I will never forget the look on my brothers face when he walked in and seen my taking a rasp to his brand new Black Widow,,,LOL. After some fitting, some stain and polyurethane my brother had a perfect fitting custom grip that he still shoots today. Grips is a personal choice, what works for one may not work for another. Best of luck finding what's comfortable and suited for you. JMG
Have two predators and really like the wider grip as it fits my hand and shooting style better. Never could find a widow that felt right to me. Other bows have been hit or miss. Best bet is to barrow one or pick up one used and see if it works for you........
