Title: Hunting in Virginia and the rut
Post by: JonCagle on November 30, 2019, 07:15:08 PM
Are there any Virginia hunters on here who had a tough season/rut? I hunted hard here in carrol county and the chasing seemed to be almost nil. What little I saw was occurring at night. I have been browsing a few other forums and have been seeing similar reports of a strange rut and was curious if any members here have experienced the same this year

hey brother, i live and hunt in Greensville and Brunswick co.  I hunted Ohio during the peak of the rut. This was probably my lousy bow season in 30 years in terms of sightings. i know some Va. guys that had a good season. BTW i been going to Hillsville to the labor day sale for years.

I'm in central VA, and I would have agreed with you up until Saturday, November 16th.  That day I saw ten different bucks between 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.   Apparently a hot doe had been in the area, and all the bucks came to check her out.  I saw scraping, rubbing, chasing, and fighting.  It was very exciting to witness all that activity.  Five days later I sat in the same stand and I didn't see a deer all day.
If I'd been sitting 200 yards in any other direction, I may not have seen anything that day.  Sometimes you're just in the right spot :goldtooth:
