Title: TB?

I have seen a few references to deer hunters contracting Tuberculosis from handling deer. I heard of a Michigan hunter just this week. Apparently, it is fairly common in deer and has been known for quite some time. I never heard of this before. Has any one else seen any information about it?

No sir but that would stink.  I get tested for TB everyv5 years.  Bad stuff.

I saw it being discussed on another forum. It is apparently rare but possible. I won't let it ruin my season though.

It's Bovine TB. Biggest risk is transmission to cattle....but guess where the deer got it to start with. Cattlemens association won't mention that. Human cases do happen but rarely....way more likely from cattle than deer. That being said don't ever process or eat a sick animal. Period.

It is treatable with antibiotics. If caught in time.

If you notice...most all the human cases are people that processed a carcass of a sick animal AND the person was also immunocompromised.

I saw this on the news the other day and did some checking.  i think you may have better chance of catching something from the cash register person at your local quick stop on your way out to hunt.

we killed a cow elk in the 80's that had it BAD...when we opened her up the smell bout bowled ya over

the liver was flat and pink with purple spots...the heart was shriveled up and the arteries were crusty...
the lungs were green and all but one small chunk just ran through my fingers like pudding and the rib cage
was just as green as the lungs.

packed out the quarters, heart, liver and the one piece of lung that would stay together...had it checked out
and ended up getting a new tag...took the meat to the dump!!!
