Our archery deer season here begins this week on Sept. 27th in the northern zone and on Oct. 1st in most of the rest of the state. Good luck everyone. Please stay safe and wear a harness when in a tree stand. And share some pictures of your hunts, what you see, and some pictures of your deer if you can. And early bear is already open, so show some pictures of some bears if you have them.
Once again, good luck everyone and stay safe! :archer2:
Hope it cools down for the opener!
:archer: It's time for this thread again already ? This last year sure went by quick. It will be fun hearing about everyone's hunting adventures again. Good luck to all and let the bucks beware next Tuesday !
Good hunting y'all.

My NY hunting days are over, but I wish you all the best of luck. Keep the wind in you face and pick a spot!! Share the stories please.
Good luck everyone, many successes to you all.
Good luck guys. I too will not be hunting NY this year and will have completed my move to Indiana this weekend.
83 degrees hereabouts today - was 86 degrees yesterday. This ain't hunting weather! I don't own a camo Speedo.
Good luck, all.
Best of luck to you all!
I'm from NJ but about 100 yards from NYS. Once NY opens I abandon NJ. Like NY hunt format much better. Good luck boys. Shoot straight
Good luck to ALL! Be safe
Good luck y'all! I can't wait to start this season again!
Beoadheads and knifes are being sharpened in hopes to be put to good use.
I wish you guys the best of luck and remember to share your adventures. I'll be out opening weekend for sure (probably down in Howard) and if the weather is decent probably Letchworth opening day.
Wishing everyone a safe and successful season! :archer2: Sure hope the weather cools down soon.
Good luck everyone. Stay safe
Best of luck to everyone and be safe.
Good Luck fellas!...I wish everyone a great season and much success. Be safe out there and have fun
Won't be long now until all you southerners hit the woods. Good luck again.
We got the triple curse this AM-- windy, warm and wet. Not a good start but things are looking up for later in the week!

About like the 20 mph winds and 100 degree heat here. I still enjoyed it.

Good luck to all, miss the NY season as the weather down South here is just too warm for bow season!
Hoping y'all hunt safe and shoot straight!
I was over in the Moose River Plains (Adirondacks) for the opening of early bow. Quite warm, but nice camping weather. No deer sighted, but I did see some moose tracks near an old beaver dam. A rare sight here. It looks like it's cooling down a bit, and the rain is supposed to let up some. So that is a plus.
Cooled down overnight, wind has slacked off as well. Saw some does this AM, and found a fresh scrape. Late acorn drop but they are hailing down now. Lookin' good !!!!!

First sit of my season,
Saturday morning
Weather was cold (33degrees) and still. The kinda still where you cringe at every step you take. Got into the tree around 6:30am. My asbel wool was warm as the sun began lighting the earth below me. The morning was quiet didn't see even a squirrel till after 7. At 7:30 I caught a head coming through the branches to my right. At first glance I thought buck but quickly realized it was a mature doe. She was in my first window in seconds and the string was back. Clicker set as I pulled through the shot she cleared my first gap, she was moving with purpose as she approached my second clearing, she stopped to pee and poop then got to moving again. I still hadn't let down as she entered the second window (15yrds) I picked my spot and the arrow was gone, love to say I hit exactly where I was looking but I didn't I hit a little back but still looked good.
She tore forward and and literally jumped over a ground blind we had build (probably 12' and 7' high) it was impressive. In a moment she was out of sight and it was quiet. Since it was only about 7:32 at this point I decided to stay put, we had a friend and my father on the property and with such a perfect morning I didn't wanna disturb their hunt.
At 10 I got down and found blood feet from impact sight. It wasn't hard to follow her path. Within 10 mins I had covered the 125yrds to where she lay. Liver and lung did her in, 112lbs on the scale no fat yet. She'll feed us well and I'm grateful for her.
Best of luck to the rest of ya, here's to hoping bone shows up later this season.
Nice shooting Kopper! Congrats :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:

Congrats kopper, well done!
Congrats! Looks like good eating!
Congrats!
Way to go Greg, Congrats! :clapper:
They were up and about today--after all that rain-- still early in the season, though. A beautiful morning and evening in the woods!
Activity increased last night..saw 9, including 3 good bucks. they are on their feet. Good beechnut crop this year, has them feeding early. Plenty of apples, in certain areas, and acorns abound. It will be good in the later season too, as they will return to these feeding areas when the snow falls. Its starting to get good!
Nice doe kopper! Beautiful :campfire:
Good job on the doe Kopper. I had a spindly little 5pt broadside for 5 minutes at 15yds last night . He was with a big doe which I would have shot but she wouldn't give me an opening. Weather is great so I'll be out again tonight. I'm not going out twice a day this year until the rut hits as last year I burned myself out hitting it too much before the prime time.
Congrats kopper good luck to everyone else
Anyone out for bear in the Southern / Catskills area?
Congrats Kopper!!! Well done!!!
Nice job on the doe, tell us about your setup. Looks like a homemade bow there?
Shot this doe Friday morning with a selfbow that i made this year. 15 yard shot with a short blood trail.
Osage selfbow 45#@27" , sitka spruce arrows fletched with wild turkey feathers with Simmons broadheads.
Congratulations rick! Beautiful doe!!
Thanks guys for the kind reply's
My set is a homemade long bow 49#'s at 26" with gold tip warrior 600's tipped with 200grn massia Heads
I live for this thread every season !! Congrats on the does guys and keep posting those stories. It is a blast reading all your adventures. :clapper: :clapper:
I saw 5 does last night but none came in close enough for a shot. I watched a a small 6pt and a forkie butting heads a little on and off for five minutes at 50yds or so. Fun night even with no shot opportunity.
Had a hopeful image though all I have seen in legal daylight is does. Five antlerless at one time moving through shoulder-to-shoulder with not three feet between each, in fact! That was a first.
Congrats rick..
Rick, a fine accomplishment. Congrats.
Spent two days up in 8T; saw doe both days, nothing close; and a nice buck when I was leaving around 10am Wednesday. Hope to make it back up after Halloween.
Shick
Congratulations!!!
Well done
Don't know about the rest of you, but the season has been slow here after a promising start, mostly due to ongoing warm weather I expect. However, the woods have been beautiful and it's a privilege to sit comfortably on stand regardless of deer movement. Feels like the end of the week might pick up-- have to get out the pocket hand warmers and longjohns soon!
Keep at it Susan,
Charlie, I hope you see that one in daylight
I managed to send An arrow through a young seven pointer last Saturday morning. Eight yard shot and eighty yard recovery.I hit him high and back with the exit in the opposing armpit. Happy to have him. I also shot a decent hog in July down south. I used my home made take down for both. I have been trying for a week to post a picture but have given up. Not a computer guy. Good luck to all and congrats to all who were successful so far.
Congratulations glen!
Glen's pictures
Thanks for the help Rick
Anytime, I'm not sure why they came out like that?
Congrats Glen!
I had some good fortune Saturday morning.
At about 8:00 along came two does. My good luck was that I couldn't get to my bow without being spotted. I was caught day dreaming and was somewhat unaware. No way I could reach for my bow and not be seen. Especially since the cover, leaves from a small basswood tree, were now on the forest floor since our Thursday blow.
My treestand is probably better for some gun hunter. I don't know who put it up. It was a wooden stand, quite sturdy, but only 12 feet off the ground. The only saving grace was that the tree is probably three and a half feet in diameter, providing lots of back cover. And, for myself, a lefty, in order to be able to draw, I needed to be standing on the side of this contraption rather than sitting on the little bench.
Anyway, I figured since I was wasn't going to get any venison from these does, I might as well get ready in case they were being followed. That took a whole hour, but sure enough, here he came at 9:00 as on a string.
Of course, I knew exactly where he'd pass. But, just as he got in a perfect spot, 18 yards, he turned 45 degrees for a sweet quarter away angle and stopped.
I didn't need a tree limb falling on my head to figure this out. "Wait for your shot" philosophy had just delivered.
I would have taken one of the does because I don't have any venison left. Plus, I don't usually get very particular anyway. So, it was a good thing I had my hands in my pocket an hour earlier.
The eight point ran about 40 yards through the open woods, then walked another 30 before deciding to settle down. He went directly toward my car, so he saved me some dragging to boot!
I hope everyone else does well this season also. The rut is just getting started. So, I think there will be some good stories to come.
I'll try posting this and a picture. This is my second attempt. So, we'll see.

Congratulations Glen & Bob! Well done :campfire:
Congratulations!!!!
Great buck, congratulations !
Way to go bob! Congratulations
My brother took his first buck with a recurve Saturday morning as well! A beautiful 5pt with a perfect double lung.
My Saturday went less than stellar, the morning brought no deer sightings at lunch I got down and took a look around only to find someone had found my honey hole on state land and set up camp think it's spoiled for this year (3 half day hunts no deer sighted).
Anyways my afternoon left me more hopeful. It wasn't long after I got settled in a new spot I had a nice young buck headed my way.
Little back story: a year and a half ago I switched to a clicker and watched my shooting go from ok to awesome, this past week I was smacking my target at 40yards just for fun. Well Friday my clicker broke, wouldn't click any more I tried everything but couldn't fix it. I practiced Friday and shot well, not as perfect as prior but well good enough out to 20 yards to feel more then confident.
Back to the little buck. He came into my shooting lane at 12yards I had to do the super slow draw due to lack of cover. I felt I had hit anchor good I picked my spot and pulled through. In a second I watched in horror as I saw my arrow blow through low and back. The deer sprang forward but quickly stopped at 35 yards behind a deadfall. He stood there looking around for 7-8 min before walking off seemingly unaware. It was then I decided to back out and call in the blood dogs for the morning.
I told the dog handler exactly how it had played out and he was more than confident we'd find this deer. We met at 7am Sunday morning a full 15hrs since the shot we quickly got on track and for the next 1.5hrs and roughly 2 miles we followed this dog before losing all sign in a swamp where the dog could no longer go. Heart breaking, I spend so much time practicing I hit this deer so far back from point of aim I would have missed my whole bail at home. I can't stop thinking about it, I don't know where I went wrong, over drew, under drew idk :dunno: :dunno:the dog handler believes since we never did cross a visible bed and all the sporadicness in the trail the coyotes probably got on him early in the night. Sickening

Copper, Congratulations to your brother, Ben. What a bowhunting animal he is!!! Now the whole family has scored with traditional. (never go back now!!!!!).
Greg, I couldn't quite figure just where you hit that deer. But, it sounds from your story that he may survive the wound.
That's the worst, for sure. .... When I screw up, I feel extremely relieved when it's a clean miss....
Most likely intestines bob, like I said I had a solid 7-8min to watch him and look at the hole arrow is covered in small food and brown slime, unfortunately he won't survive, I would pay to have had a clean miss at this point.
It's not the first and until I die I'm sure it won't be the last, Shit happens back to practice
Congrats to your brother Greg. Sorry things didnt work out for you. Keep pushing. Great buck Bob. He is a beauty.
Well, I feel for you Greg. I've been there.
But, something I learned. Next time I have a long track, I'll call you for the tracking dog. About 3 years ago, I lost a deer and couldn't get hold of anybody who had a dog - from searching on the internet.
So, as I say. Good to know.
Was lucky to take this plump 8 pointer this morning. I set a stand last weekend for a different 8 point that I had on camera. I just needed to wait for a southwest wind which we had this morning but when this one came in he was good enough for me. It's been a very rewarding season hunting with my selfbow!
Beautiful buck! Congratulations and great shoot
Rick, way to get it done. Great job. I will be heading up to the Bath area to hunt thru tuesday morning.
It'll be a little colder this time. Hope to show some pictures.
Shick
Well done Rick. I love the bow.
Great buck
Congratulations!!
Cool!
Nice Buck, Rick. Congratulations. I think it's cool with the self bow.
Did my dog-gone-ist to talk my son in hunting the big oak on the inside corner of the soybean field. I hunted that property for the first time this year on Wednesday afternoon, October 30. I saw 15 deer in three hours, including four bucks. I went back on Saturday morning, November 2, hunted for only one and a half hours and shot the nice 8 point which I posted up on November 4th on this thread. In that hour and a half, I saw a total of six deer. This spot is hot!!!
So, this last Friday evening, through text messages, I tried talking my son into hunting that treestand. He desparately wants a buck with his recurve.
Alas, he opted for another property.
So, I couldn't resist going back.
At exactly sunrise this last Saturday, there comes a dandy four point making an excellent 6 yard shot for a right handed shooter. I used my only buck tag on the eight point. But, only a half hour in along comes a nice doe on the same trial. She cut the corner and gave me a nice slight quarter away angle at 6 yards. I put the same arrow though her that I shot the eight point last Saturday. Since the angle was more down than with the buck, the arrow stuck in the ground and snapped off as she ran away. I had about a 50 yard recovery.
For myself, it's been a really good season. With only my wife and I, I'm not sure how much more meat I need for the freezer. And the rut has only just started.
Anyway, I won't have another buck tag until next Saturday for Regular season. I'm debating hunting with a longbow. We'll see.
Congrats on your doe and eight point Bob, well done!!
Congrats Bob. Great buck
Congrats glen on your critters. Is your riser made of wood?
Kopper, bummer about your deer. Congrats to your brother
Congrats Rick, fine buck
Well done bob. You're having a great season
Guys, I saw a big 8-9pt get hit on I-87 S today at 1 pm in afternoon: middle of day, broad daylight, no cover or trees in sight.
Totalled car. Heavy traffic, and cop sitting up there taking accident report. I opted not to pull over and take a picture regrettably.
My secondary funnels today on my walk had brand new trails laid out with fresh tracks moving in both directions, these areas were void all season long.
I would say there is all day movement right now. If I had a tag left, I'd be sitting all day long every day between now and Saturday (if possible). Just pack a lunch, bring more clothes than I need, a good book, notepad, DSLR, and battery pack, and plenty of squirrel arrows!
Also, quite a few other dead deer along 60 mile stretch of highway. I'm hoping everyone has fun this week.
Congratulations bob great shooting! Now to talk rich into listening to the old man :biglaugh:
Kopper, my son Rich got skunked this last weekend. I felt bad for him because he won't be able to get out again until regular deer season.
After missing basically the whole bow season with back problems I got out on Friday afternoon 11/15 & was fortunate to get a 3pt. with a broken antler. . I never figured out how to post pics. or I would

Thanks for posting the pic Ted. Ken you're right about me being over the hill, but I'm not under the hill yet. Hope to have many more seasons ahead of me!
Congrats Terry, well done!
Congratulations terry great shot
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper: to all that had a good season !!!!
This is a little late but I took this guy November 10th . Hunting with 43 lb's this year as I have a torn rotator but couldn't think of missing the season. I go under the knife to get my shoulder fixed December 18th and hope to be back full steam by spring !
Bob, congratulations. You always come thru. Good luck with the surgery.
Shick
Congrats Terry. you sure do like giving rides to deer.
Great buck bob!
Congrats Bob, beautiful buck
Congrats Bob, nice buck
Great bucks! Congrats to everyone!
Congrats, Bob.
Years back, a friend told me more deer are killed on Nov. 10 than any other day of the year; plan your prime hunting days around that date and you can't go wrong.
Bullseye!!
Nice buck. Follow the doc's instructions and rehab to the T.

Congrats Bob and Terry. Plenty of season left.
Last day, last 1/2 hour state land 4pt. This is the 3rd buck I've killed from the the same hemlock tree in 4years. Killed him with my homemade hybrid longbow bow named "Fritz".
Nice buck Bob, congrats.
Way to go Bob and Gerald NYS stepped up this year! :clapper:
Gerald, congratulations on a fine deer, and with 'Fritz' no less. Luv the hemlocks in NY. Don't forget to work on that 'Hartung Ramhunter. Congratulations again.
Shick
Nice buck Gerald. Especially on the last day with a home made bow. Well done
Gerald congrats ! Sounds like a you found a great spot , I often hang stands in hemlocks they make for great cover. The stand I shot my buck from was in a hemlock and had only put it up a few weeks prior. I'll see you at the shoots ...
Thanks men to make the spot even sweeter my 15 year old son was with me in the tree only a few feet below me and he's been there for the 2 other bucks as well. He always gets first shot but has always hesitated long enough for the bucks to start and move off. And I don't wait around once there out of his effective range.
Nice job Gerald.
Hemlock provides cover even in November, that's for sure.

I was very fortunate to have an excellent hunting season so far, and it's not finished yet. Today, I saw and replied to this thread on Pow-Wow: "Topic: So, what have you learned from this hunting season?" I believe this is a really good topic this time of year.
I once read from a fellow who was successful in business that he learned his lessons from what he did right, and forgot what he did wrong. Most people, myself included, like to focus on what we did wrong and tell ourselves not to do that again. That's okay. But, when you do something right, perhaps that should be codified.
Anyway, too much philosophy. Hoping someone can get some value from my hunts this year, here's what I wrote:
Excellent thread. Very successful season this year for me. These are some of my lessons.
1) Don't smell up your hunting area by over-exposing to too many visits. My first visit to my (new) honey-hole was Wednesday, Oct. 30. My second visit, three days later, Saturday, November 2, netted an 8 point. My third visit, 7 days following, November 9 netted a doe. My third visit, 7 more days, November 16 and I had opportunities with no tags.
Why stop, right? It's done for the season. Burned out. That's okay.
In addition, this stand was close in, not requiring me to walk past good deer habitat to get to my stand.
2) Back cover is more important that front cover. Huge tree behind, leaves all gone in front, and no problem. Buck was 18 yards unaware. Doe was 7 yards unaware. I say the stand is only 12 off the ground. A friend says 10 feet. Whatever.
3) Hunt funnels. This stand is on the corner of a field with woods on both sides. They come through the woods rather than the field and turn the corner. They come at various angles through the woods. So, this is a pinch point.
4) Treestand is on the inside of the radius. The deer trails all curve around the treestand. The deer, coming from multiple angles, almost never are facing directly at the treestand in their travels. They loop around. I have been spotted in treestands where the deer trail comes directly toward that stand at reasonable distances, say 30 yards and less.
5) Wait for your shot. Wait for your shot. Wait for your shot. Even after I drew on the doe, I did something I never do. I held my draw for several seconds for one reason alone: to see if the doe saw my movement, was alerted, and would react. Satisfied that she was relaxed, I picked a spot, and released. My now passed friend, Rusty Boos, upon learning I was going bear hunting jumped up and down almost screaming at me, saying "wait for your shot." After having too many failures on deer, I decided to internalize his admonishment, "wait for your shot."
Congrats gerald
Congratulations to you all !!
Well said Bobaru I too believe it's real easy to over hunt an area. It's tough but I don't step foot in some of my best areas until November. I also believe resident deer will know where scent is concentrated and avoid it in future years ...
