How can this happen to someone that has shot a traditional bow for over 50 years?

When I get in a hurry, I frequently regret it...

Will burn me up if I don't wear an armguard

I don't wear arm guards either.  Now and then a new bow will bite me.  Usually when I have the brace height too low.

I have to wear an arm guard. I know it's the way I hold the bow.

That's way higher than than where I get hit.

I make arm guards so it kind of goes with the ensemble like cowboys with Stetsons and boots :-).

It's something to do with turning 62, then it just gets worse every year:)

I don't wear an arm guard because I usually don't hit my forearm with the string.  Like you, it sometimes happens, and it isn't always with a low brace height longbow.  It seems to happen more with some bows than others, and I'm not sure why.  Some bows have a grip that feels better when the bowhand is rotated more into the bow than is optimal, and that may cause string burn.  Now that I know that, I tend to either stay away from those bows, or if it's a bow I already have, to reshape the grip so it feels more comfortable when held with the pressure point between the thumb and lifeline.

Low brace height or wrist rolling on release.

I seldom hit my arm, and when I do, it is because I do something wrong. However, I ALWAYS use an arm guard.

I don't hit my arm very often, but I always wear an arm guard because I don't want to subconsciously develop a flinch. May not make any difference, but I'm gonna stick with my "belt and suspenders" approach.

I haven't used an arm guard in years. The only time is to hold down a bulky sleeve when I'm hunting and that's not very often.

Funny that you brought this  up because i am having the same problem like you and also have shot nearly 50 yrs. without an arm guard but it seems no matter which of my bows I shoot over the last 3 to 4 weeks now I am hitting my arm. I have notice that for some strange reason no matter the type of grip that the bow has they just aren't feeling the same in my hand when I shoot. I have been trying to figure this out on what I may have changed in my form to cause it. Good luck hope you solve your problem soon because hunting season is only a few weeks away.

Just one tenth of your experience and none bowhunting- just shooting.  I have developed the same issue. I found having an open stance and focus of bow hand elbow and grip helps me - but I shoot with a arm guard always!

I wear an arm guard the same way I wear a seat belt. Don't really care for either but I'd rather have it and not need than...need it and not have it.

Strange you should bring this up.  After over 50 years of wearing one I quit doing so a couple of weeks ago.  Tried it without and haven't been hitting my arm so far.

I never hit my arm.

Cept when I forget to put on my arm guard.

So that's why I always wear one.

Depends a little on the bow, but for the most part if I'm not wearing bulky hunting clothes I don't wear one. I use one with my longbow though.
