Well the results are in. Roger Norris and I dukes it out on the Elm Hall Traditional Archery shoot range today and the winner was........not so fast. The original thread mentioned something about some wagers to benefit St Jude's Children Hospital. Well, while Ron LaClair, Roger and I were sitting around after the battle (only Roger and I shot), having one of the finest 'shore lunches' known to mankind, we hatched a plan. Ron has graciously donated one of his signature LaClair Skinner knives, and here's how to win:
1) First, think about who you think the greatest archer between Roger and I are. This will be important, because if you pick the winning archer AND make a minimum $5.00 donation to St. Jude's, you'll get two tokens in the drawing for the knife. If you make a minimum $5.00 donation to St Jude's and pick the losing archer, you get one token in the drawing. I'll post a link to St Jude's and specific instructions below(as in you can private message me a screenshot of your receipt but please also post below your pick), but as your first clue, the winners first name begins with 'R'. Choose wisely and your chances double. There may be some further clues and fun photos released in the next few days. Cheers!!👍
Since the winners name begins with "R" I pick Ray as the winner. In making my pick I used the highly scientific method of alphabetical order of the two names.
Waiting for the St. Jude's link to make my donation.

The above link will take you right to St Jude's and you can pay with PayPal, credit card or electronic check draft. If you select the notify someone and include my e-mail address of raylyon@live.com, I will get notification and will post that I've got it on this thread. Thanks for helping St Jude's

Kevin Hansen confirmed and thanks for the vote!!

Bluegills and Walleye that Roger fried in his old cast iron skillet. Homemade coleslaw and PS from Ray plus the best cherry pie I've ever eaten from Rays cherry farm.
I brought my appetite

Sent you a donation Ray ... glad to see you boys are having fun generating $$ for the Kids !!
elkken
My donation has been sent, but I'm declaring the shoot off a draw since we haven't seen a score card, and the only clear winners are the kids!!!
Jason
Great idea! Did I miss the end date?
Ending will be in about two weeks
Raymond Raymond Raymond....my dear friend, my loyal compadre. Possibly the greatest pie maker in the world. All around great cook....he made me a smoked cisco and sharp cheddar omelet once that I dream about 20 years later. But you remain the 387th best archer in the world. My arrows had eyes, they could not be beaten. Ask ray about the buffalo....he made an AMAZING 35 yard kill shot....mine was closer :biglaugh:
Vote for me. I am an awesome bowshooter, and really really humble. God Bless America. and longbows. :archer2:
Yes Roger I did make a very nice shot on the Buffalo. I was just out of the 10 ring but you did not know it. You said I'm going to hit your nock, thinking it was going to take a Robin Hood shot in the big competition and to beat me you had to split my arrow. You missed my nock and it it happened land in the ten ring. That's how I saw/heard it.
:biglaugh: :notworthy:
(Elk)Ken G, thank you for the nice donation, you're entered.

You gotta admit I can spin a good yarn and that should be worth a vote or two?? 😉
Jason Taylor, you're in, you just gotta admit the winner. Sorry we missed you at the shoot. First time in 15 years since I made it. When Roger was checking in he said 'I was here last year so I should be in the computer'. The nice man said 'it shows you were here yesterday shooting too-we can just convert you to the weekend rate'. You almost got away with your warmup round buddy.😂

If it isn't worth cheating for, it isn't worth having :biglaugh:
What Ray isn't telling you, is that I did most of my shots behind my back. Those that I couldn't do behind my back, I shot blindfolded. The Michigan DNR is currently inspecting my arrows to see if they are legal to hunt with. They are convinced I have inserted some kind of radar target seeking device.
Well that would explain a lot of things. However you forgot to tell the gang how I deftly deflected an arrow off a sapling and into the kill zone. 😘
By the way, our scoring was 10 for small center kill ring, 8 for rest of kill zone and ZERO for anything else.
With all the good natured bantering it's hard to pick a winner. But i'm going out on a limb and going to say that in the end Ray pulled off an upset over Roger. Sorry Roger....

'An upset', hmmm, that's almost a back handed compliment 😉
:goldtooth: Of course it was a compliment :archer2:

You should NOT play the lottery this weekend....your luck is faltering. Ray pulled out all the stops. He greased my arrows with vaseline, and changed the brace height on my bow when I was in the outhouse. He hid my water bottle on the range, all the time secretly hydrating himself. Because of dehydration and leg cramps, I shot most targets one legged, flamingo style. Then he INSISTED that we gorge on bluegill fillets prior to shooting the second leg....forcing me to slave over a hot frying pan while he and LaClair gulped 'gills like sea otters. Yet after all of that, superior archery skills prevailed. :archer2: :biglaugh:

In one corner, we have Roger's Super Shrew Lil Favorite recurve weighing in at 50# with four fletch carbon arrows. In the other corner, we have Ray's Super Shrew Classic Hunter longbow also weighing in at 50# with Autumn Legend cedar arrows made by Paul Jalon. Ron LaClair commissions Paul to make these arrows for his customers and Paul's work is fantastic.
I won't mention the participants weights, but suffice to say we're loaded with blue gills and walleye fillets

Might be a little confusing if we're having an eating contest or archery competition 😉

Here's my own donation to St Jude's. It only takes a few minutes. One of the best places to support. We're only asking a $5 minimum donation to get in the contest.
End date for entry will be August 15!!!
I hate it when someone takes a candid profile picture

Duly noted Wade. I'll make sure your vote of confidence is duly noted when my daughter does the unbiased drawing 😆😆.

Roger, I don't play the lottery, I have so many bows that I'd like to try that I can't afford it!!! Those gill fillets looked delicious!!! I wish I had been there to eat some so you wouldn't have been weighed down so much. :cheesy: I hated to vote against you, but I think it was the cherry pie that did in!!! :biglaugh:

There's a run on Roger ever since the laser guided arrows comment. Better up my trash talking game!😉
I'm a longbow shooter so for this wager, I stuck with what I know and went with Ray. I swear I wasn't paid off with cherry pie.

[attachment=1]
Multi tasking. I think he's calling his archery coach to tell him he's fired. 😂
Hey Ray ... I think thats Ken Gettman not German and I voted for you buddy  :archer2:
Sorry Ken, spellcheck changed it twice on me, and I've signed you up for the L team.😂
So here we are, strolling through an afternoon post official competition on the second course. We made the scoring a little different in that there was no scorecard. We made it real simple, best arrow on a target gets one point, ties were no score. Now I must be honest, I switched bows to a 66" long Blacktail for the afternoon. It was a bow I had won the auction here on Tradgang supporting PBS. Well, we went out on the course cold (although Roger did graciously offer to warm up on the range first). Roger jumped out to a 3-0 lead, including the infamous buffalo shot. So I slowly creep back into the competition until it's all noted at 6 targets each. Then it happens, gimme shot on a whitetail target, Roger had shot first and makes a solid kill shot. I'm thinking just settle in this is another push target, release and POW, arrow goes flying over the target and I thought my bow exploded. Now, there was an overhead pine limb that was nowhere near in the way when I set up. All I know is Roger was standing out of sight behind me and when I turned around to ask if he saw what happened and he said I don't know as he shoved what looked like a piece of string in his pocket. Well, Roger went on to win the afternoon shootoff, but he mentioned something about me flinching on every shot after the incident. Well, I'll let you all come to your own conclusions. 😇
Just tomorrow and Thursday before we draw a winner. Pretty good odds at a LaClair Skinner worth $160 for a small donation. Double your odds if you guess who's the greatest Shrewhaven archer of all time. 😉
Ray,
I have donated and sent you the email
Zach Ruble z_ruble@yahoo.com
I think Roger beat ya! Sorry Ray!
Good thing you all are doing here! Good luck to all!
Zach,
I got your confirmation-Thank you for the donation👌👌
For all, I'll have my daughters do the random drawing tomorrow night (Thursday) at 9 pm, so that will be entry cutoff.
Roger's laser guided carbons or my steeped in tradition custom cedar arrows with their traditional soul. A mans got to ask himself when caught up in all the excitement of a shootout, did I score enough on those last three targets?..........go ahead gentlemen, place your guesses and make my day. 😉

Hey Ray! I just contributed. What you guys are doing is awesome. My gut tells me to vote for you, but I feel sorry for Roger so I cast my vote for him!
"My gut tells me to vote for you, but I feel sorry for Roger so I cast my vote for him!"
Ray brought the fish and he made Roger fry it but I didn't feel sorry for him.
Randy I got your confirmation from Saint Judes, you're in.
TTT. Let's get some more bids for the kids before this is over.

I just entered, hopefully I'm under the wire but if not that's okay.
I flipped a coin and it came up....Roger.

Dave, you're in. Drawing will happen in the morning. First day of bear baiting in my unit and my daughters and my good buddy and I got my stand established. Just got back and too tired to get everything laid out.

Jason Taylor, you are the winner!!!!!!
There were 8 participants and 4 selected Roger and 4 selected me (the shootoff winner). I went down the order of the list a assigned 1 card to those who picked Roger and two cards to the wise people who picked me. I then shuffled the cards very thoroughly and dealt them out face down. Without knowing what I was doing I had my wife select a number between 1 and 12. She selected 2, so I flipped the second card over and matched to the name.
Jason, I'll get your e-mail address to Ron so he can contact you about shipping the knife.
As far as the archery competition, we'll, it ended up in a dogfight seesawing battle. Roger has a couple of close misses on the second and third to the last targets and that ended up being the difference, remember we only scored kill shots so an arrow on the wrong side of the line was a zero. Roger gained redemption in the afternoon and if you take away his 'interference' Target, 🙄, we shot to a draw on the day. Roger is a very good shot. More importantly he's a great person and the best of camp mates.
Thank you to all who played/contributed to St. Jude's. $350 to the kids and a fun time by Roger, Ron and I were icing on the cake. Roger, your t-shirt will be ready soon. 😂
Thank you!!! I may have won the drawing, but the kids at St Jude are the real winners as always. It's always great to be able to help out a good cause. I'll be waiting for next years rematch to see if Roger can redeem himself.
