Question regarding spine selection, I am wanting to get some aluminum shafts but uncertain of the spine needed and wanting to see what you all are shooting or suggest. I am shooting a 45# longbow and have a 29" draw length so arrows I am currently shooting are 30" from nock groove to back of point and 150-175 up front. All the spine selection charts I have seen are suggesting 1916-2016 or 500 spine. Is this in the ballpark as I just don't have the funds currently to "play" around with too many. Thanks in advance!
The 3 Rivers chart has never steered me wrong.
Hearing our opinions can easily send you down the wrong path. Things like a crappy release or the common short draw will bring out some questionable suggestions.
The charts were made for a reason.
James,
I use both of those and work for me . You can try different points and see what fly's best with your bow set up .I even have a few 2018's I can shoot but just change the point . If you have several points in different weights just go try them to see what gives the best flight and go from there.
1916's
A 2016 might be a good starting point but it's hard to say without more info. Is your longbow an ASL or r/d cut to center. Is it 45#@28" and you're pulling it 29", or closer to 48#s? I suspect the 1916s will be too weak in spine, especially if you want to stay with 150-175 grain heads and 30" shafts. I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up with something slightly stiffer than 2016s but that is where I would start.
I'd try 2016's with that kind of point weight
Easton.com has a great chart/calculator.
Thank you all for the responses! Everyone here is amazing at sharing knowledge and I greatly appreciate you all. Looking at the 3 Rivers chart and the Easton link that Wudstix sent as well.
Thanks again!
Chip,
I use a 52" recurve at 45#. My shafts are 31" nock to insert. I shoot 165 gr points. Tried recommended shafts but a 2215 works best for me. Samey-same bare and fletched......and if anyone has 2215s laying around, lemme know I'd like more in my box.
This calculator from 3Rivers seems to be very accurate from my experience using it - https://www.3riversarchery.com/dynamic-spine-arrow-calculator-from-3rivers-archery.html
a lot depends on whether your bow is cut to center or 1/8 before or hill style or hybrid, try 1916s & 2016s , you will find the one for you between those two. thats a 500 & a 600 spine.
Order one or two of each from LAS.
They sell singles...
I'm shooting 2013s out of a 43# ILF recurve. 30.5"L with 125 gr points with a 27" draw. They shot identical to .500 spine carbons, same specs.
