I don't get out to bow fish that often but when the conditions are perfect you drop what your doing and make a way to get on the water.
I met up with my cousin ( who has never been bow fishing) and another buddy this afternoon and hit the water. It didn't take long to find our target species!
After we shot our 3 allowed fish I sat and watched over 100+ Gar spawn for over an hour on a secluded flat that is very hard to find. It was a once in a lifetime experience!

That's awesome in Michigan they are the size of a pike.
Randy, I had no idea that you were such a voyeur... spying on all them fish at their romantic weekend at the secluded flat...! :biglaugh: In all seriousness, those are some AWESOME gar! Glad you had a good time!

They are Alligator Gar. You are allowed 1 fish per day per person
Dang, those are huge! That looks like a ton of fun!
Good gosh. Had no idea they got so big. Impressive.
Way to go guys!!!!

Great job, Randy. Making the most of some well deserved down time.
So what do you do with a fish that size after you shoot it? I'm just curious, as I've never bowfished. Around here, they are mostly regarded as trash fish.

Heck of a fish, Randy.
Congrats Randy, you can feed an army!
Wow that is fantastic. Would love to get in on that. Well done.

That is a miss conception around here as well. Gar only eat live or fresh bait unlike catfish and other bottom feeders. They are very good eating when properly processed and prepared. They have two large back straps just like a deer or any other large game. The next time I get one I will get some pictures of the butchering process

Randy gar-scales instead of snake skin on your limbs? Or are they a tad big lol
cool! one is all I would want. especially if the fish was bigger than me.
DANG!!!! If the gators don't get ya, the gar will. Scary Stuff! Guess that's why I do my swimming in Michigan . . .
Nice haul. Any trouble getting them in with your setup?
Those are big gar! I'm not sure if we have Alligator Gar in Georgia, but we do have other types. I think they are considered trash fish and have no limit. At least that used to be the case. It sure would be fun to stick one of those big fish.
:scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:
What monsters!!

Awesome fish! If we get one over 10 lbs on our forays we have done good!
Wow. Great day indeed. Did you use beefed up line, or the stock line that came with your setup?
WOW!!! Those a beasts. Congratulations.
I've never seen 3 that big in one day! Looks like fun.
Not a lot of times when folks say "epic" it is...you win! Thanks for sharing.
Thx everyone!

No problems with the stock set up but it does take a team to get them in the boat. What we do is let 1 person pick the shot they want and after they "stick" the fish and bring it to the surface everyone else with shoot it also to insure the fish gets landed. The fish belongs to whoever makes the first shot.
You can land one by yourself if it is in pretty clear water but it can be a heck of a fight!
Is that roe on the ground in the pic of the one hanging up?

woo hoo! congrats!!! :clapper:

Yes sir, and don't ever try to eat them!
I've heard they are supposed to be toxic but I don't know that for sure. I do know they will take the paint off your boat! Lol
I've seen some big gar, but those are simply huge.

Amazing....congrats!
Awesome fish! I hope you saved some scales. They make very cool looking arrowhead shaped necklaces.
