Who on here has made a self bow and harvested an animal? Pics of said game or didnt happen. Ya'll have gotten me motivated with the recurve and turkey... however this evening my brain got to wandering further and contemplating using the self bow
I have killed more deer with a selfbow than any other type of archery equipment.
Here is my best, osage bow, Magnus head, off the ground on a public hunting area.
I've made lots of successful selfbows but I've never taken a deer with one however there are lots of animals taken with selfbows each year.
I listen to a specific outdoor podcast. The main personality has a brother that hunts also. During one podcast they mentioned that they have a "hunt purity" score. Basically it comes down to them analyzing how the hunt took place, equipment and so forth. They're not casting judgment by any means. But it got me thinking. For me traditional equipment on public land is pretty "pure". But with equipment that I built, i.e. self bow & wooden arrows, that would be the proudest for me. Even if it was a spike or doe. I too want to craft a self bow and kill with it. Thank you for starting this thread, I'll be watching this one for sure!

I don't know how to post pix, but I haven't killed that much with a self-bow anyway. I built a couple of my own and did kill a doe with one. Also killed a turkey with a self bow made by another bowyer. But then gravitated back to glass laminated bows. Still have one self bow on my rack, but don't use it much. No doubt they get the job done, but at this stage, I just prefer glass laminated bows more.
A well made selfbow doesn't give up much to a glass laminated bow, 10 FPs or so and some can actually outperform hill type and other longbows.
This little rig took a few this year and passed a bunch.

I don't have a pic to post but I've killed 7 or 8 whitetails with either a selfbow or a sinew backed bow that I've made.
