Title: 2019 Shed antler thread
Post by: Bvas on December 23, 2018, 03:09:05 PM
I know I'm a week early, but unfortunately I've got one to get this thread started. This guy has lost both sides already. He lost the other side about a week ago. Last pic is this year and last year. Gained some good mass, but not much else.

What were the dates you think he may have shed last year and how close did he shed geographically this year compared to last year?

Last year I only found one of his sheds. It was within a quarter mile of where this one was found. Last year he dropped one side the middle of January and carried the second side for three weeks before dropping it.

This year it was a little over a week between dropping the sides. The other side can't be too far away. I have pics of him 5 hours apart with full rack and dropping the first side.

Me and a bud went for about a four hour hike today. One from each buck I was chasing. We each found one. They were about forty yds apart. Planning on scouring the area again Sunday.

Not a monster but a good starting point. Got to fling a few arrows while I was out too. Hopefully I'll have a few more for you tonight.

Been putting in a lot of miles looking for the mates to the big sheds me and a bud found. So far, no luck. Have found a few small ones. Couple of which have been out there a year or two. This is #6 for the season.

[attachment=1,msg2854882]I found the other half of the last posted pic a couple weekends ago.  Real bummer though. I had to kick it off the skull. Perfect 14 point. He would have been a real one next year! I cant get the damn picture to load for me.

Yep Brad, hasn't been a bad week. Wish it would warm up so I could find a few more. This one just dropped the last couple days. The other side is a clean 5, I picked it up today as well.

I enjoy seeing the early shed finds almost as much as I enjoy seeing the leaves and grass in the photos.  Been real 'white' on the ground for a long time here in Michigan.  Pretty sure the Jeep wouldn't make it down the deep snow covered two-tracks I hunt up North in the Manistee National Forest.  Shed hunting will have to wait a spell.  Come oooooon Spring!

Found this one yesterday and I'm pretty sure he dropped it after I jumped him. I was following the escape route tracks and found this one about 150 yards from his bed (on a south facing point where I find sheds annually). I'm pretty sure he just shed it because there was a deer tick still crawling on it when I picked it up.  Hopefully he'll return and lose the other side. He will be a good one next year and is in a very huntable location.

Great finds gents!

Here is one I found behind the house about 2 weeks ago. It is half of a 4 point I saw a few times this past season. I  found the shed in a thick area I had seen him bedded in numerous times. The picture is how I found it hung up in the Y of a little sapling.[attachment=1]

That's cool when ya find em hanging!  I found one hanging in woven wire a few years back. Also found remnants wedged in trees by squirrels.

I believe it! I've found eight so far this season and have walked about thirty miles. I started early, before a lot of bucks had dropped. Only because there were two bucks sheds I was specifically after.

I still have a couple big areas to cover.

I'm jealous of the bare ground! We just got another foot of snow on top of the 40 to 50 inches we have on the ground, even better it came with 60 MPH winds.

On mice and squirrels chewing on antlers. I have a deer skull with some small antlers sitting on a stump outside my hunting cabin deep in the MO woods. I have watched a squirrel chew on these. Once he had an antler chip in his mouth and  just ate it in small bites.
