Let me state up front that I do not endorse this particular idea. When I found this, it reminded me somewhat of the old threads several years ago on TG about "nutters".
While rummaging around in some boxes of old arrows at my dad's house, I came across this strange small game arrow. What you see is an old Herters farbenglass arrow with a golf ball mounted on the business end. I asked my dad (in his mid 90's) what the story behind it was. He said he didn't know, so I asked my younger brother if he knew. He fessed up to being the inventor. While I was away in college (early 70's) he was shooting rabbits, birds, snakes, and foxes in the scrub brush hills and canyons near the house in SOCAL. He was losing and breaking arrows right and left, and looking for an alternative. He didn't have any flu-flu's and didn't have access to the blunts they had at the time so he came upon this idea. The golf ball was put into a vice and a hole drilled the size of the diameter of the arrow shaft. The shaft was then epoxied into the hole. I have not shot it, but he claims it actually flew pretty straight, but admits he doesn't recall ever hitting any game with it. Eventually he discovered he could buy blunts and even tried some of the earlier versions of the Snaro with much greater success.

Should keep it from snaking under grass.
How many grains ya figure a golf ball is :dunno:
Close enough and you might get a "hole in one" 🤨

Probably enough to weaken spine
"Is that a Titleist?"
I've seen lots of seagulls killed by golf balls so I guess on the end of an arrow they would work as well. I think you would probably want a Titleist ProV1. They give you better spin control
If anyone watched Seinfeld.....a titleist almost took down a whale lol "the sea was angry that day, like an old man trying to send soup back at a deli" lol
What's the FOC on that bad boy?
For hare: titleist pro V1x
For squirrels you can get away with Bridgestone
I wonder if you can work your arrow right and left like a golf ball? You know, fade it around that tree, draw it around that rock.
BTW a Titleist golf ball weighs 702.6 grains.
Bet that'd mess up this "stock pile"............
Turns out the ball is a Tru Flite. USGA rules are that a ball weigh no more than 708.8 grains, so I suspect this one is pretty close, minus the material drilled out. Obviously there is some extreme FOC on this weapon. Also remember the dimples on a ball help reduce the drag. Not sure how much it helps in this application. Just for fun, I looked up the speed at which a golf ball leaves the face of a club. The article I read says a perfect center hit from a typical 100mph swing from a driver will impart an initial velocity of 148mph. 148mph equates to 217 feet per second, so certainly faster than my brother's recurve, but not that far off.
Given all the rocks in the area, I'm amazed it didn't bounce off one and return to hit him in the head.
Wow, talk about extreme FOC! I might just make one up, only 'cause I have a lot of shafts and a few random golf balls. Fore! :archer2:
What kind of "driver" did he use with this setup?
Have thought of turning 1 inch balls in hardwood for use on small game. Had considered golf balls but too heavy and made up of wound rubberbands so figured would probably start coming apart after a few impacts..........
Years ago before I was shooting traditional equipment, I found a blue rubber ball in the woods when my buddy and I were scouting. Shortly after we spotted a fox squirrel in a tree. My bright idea was to affix the ball to the arrow like your dealio. I was pretty impressed with how hard his recurve slung that ball up through the branches. He got off several shots with that set up before the fox squirrel got out of dodge.
We both remember that story, but have forgotten I don't know how many deer that we've taken over the years.
Did this a few years ago, called it my "Tiger Tamer"! Found our real quick that it will put a flat out thumping on whatever you hit with it! Downside is, Central Texas is rock heaven! if you miss and hit rocks, that thing will bounce for miles! :bigsmyl: Good luck!
