With the east wind in the morning I elected to stay home and take care of a few things. I knew it was going to switch west around mid day. I grabbed a bite and showered around 11:30 and I was in the tree by 12:30. I set up off a big primary scrape that I have had several good bucks using in daylight. With the wind being parallel to the scrape I knew it was enough to make any approaching buck feel safe and it was enough of a angle to work to my advantage. At 1:40 I caught movement and I could see immediately it was one of the bucks frequenting the scrape. I made ready and knew he would pass by at 12 yards before hitting the scrape behind me. I watched him looking at the scrape at around 30 yards from it and I knew he was coming to check it. As he stepped into the shooting lane I picked a tuft of hair behind his left shoulder and let the Douglas Fir shaft go. It blew through both lungs and I knew he was dead on his feet. I watched him stumbling going over the ridge to the south and figured he would be laying not far from the last point I could see him. With the fresh snow on the ground I could see the blood painted on the trees and on the ground from the stand. After giving him time I took up the trail and made the recovery. After taking a few minutes to calm my emotions I knelt with the fallen Monarch and thanked him for the chess match this season and the Lord for these amazing animals and to be blessed with the opportunity to chase them. They are incredible animals and my respect for them will always be the reason Whitetails are a year round lifestyle for me and my family. I was shooting my 55# Tall Tines longbow and a 615 grain Douglas Fir shaft with a 160 grain VPA head.

That's a great buck. It seems 11/9 is a great day to hunt in the mid west. It has lured me away from home many times which is a bit dangerous. Seeing it's my wife's birthday.

Thank you for all the nice comments and support. I truly feel blessed and I am very thankful to have been given this opportunity. I have to admit it was a bunch of work to put myself in the position to take such a great animal. I would like to thank Brian Wessel at Tall Tines Traditional Archery for making a great hunting bow and David Sisamis of Jaybird Arrows for making great wood arrows. These guys are great at what they do and I feel like I was given great equipment which helped put me in a position to be successful.

It's not lost on me that you shot a tall tuned buck with a Tall Tines bow. Great looking whitetail. Congratulations!!👍👍
Thanks again for the comments guys. Just some quick history on my strategy.. This particular area was about 20 yards from a big Beach Tree that is a annual triple scrape. It's a primary used by mature bucks in the area every year. I've never hunted it but monitored it annually over the years and I scout this particular area in Feb/March. I keep a logbook on the weather conditions year in/out as to when these deer use it and why. It's about impossible to get in because of how these bucks use the thermals to check this scrape without even going to it. I picked a Red Oak out last February that I felt would be the spot if the right situation came. Well on this particular day it did and I felt one of these Bucks would move around 2-4pm based on the wind switch that was forecasted that day and the trend with the barometer. I moved in and killed him about a hour after I set up. I have kept records over the years and it seems that these older deer make about 1 mistake a year and I just happened to be in the right spot when he did. Here are a couple pics of him at 3.5 and 4.5.

Thanks Owl.. I agree on the neck. He was like that this year. Genetically he didn't have a big body like the deer we typically have here but he was long. He's a cool buck. I liked his character. This farm typically has cool genetics and he had the split 2 at 3.5 which he lost but both 2's were bladed this year.

Great buck! Congrats
Congratulations on a Great Ohio Buck! It just does not get any better than that.
Glory where it's due! Well said sir.
WOW what a nice Buck! Congratulations.
Outstanding!
Nice strategizing and particularly having the patience to only hunt that spot under ideal conditions. That would be really hard to do, knowing the quality of bucks using that scrape!
Ps - I sure wish you would write up that story with pics for the PBS magazine. We need articles like that for the next issue and soon🤓
