I have been bow hunting for about 7 years total out of the last 15 years or so, with about a 7 year break until last summer, only ever killing some squirrels and grouse, and never had an opportunity to take a shot at anything full size.
After missing an easy 6 yard shot at a doe about two weeks ago, during the last weekend of bow season, (right over her back, duh), I determined to keep on hunting with a bow throughout rifle season.
Last weekend, I was presented with the exact same set up on a doe, and connected with the arrow going through both shoulders, up to the feathers, and breaking off, with the long part of the shaft falling out the far side.
She went all of about 50 yards and piled up. Got her through both lungs and couldn't be happier.
I have two elk tags still, which I am not even considering rifle hunting for.
I had more close encounters this year with bulls than in all my other time in the woods combined. It would have been a great season based on that alone.

Congrats - what a nice fat doe and some pretty hunting country! I vividly remember my first and it was only 49 years ago.
my buddy had a trail cam set up near my stand and it caught the moment of impact.

That is so cool.
Is that the arrow going out behind her about 8 feet back?
Roy I don't think so; I am up in the tree with the deer underneath it, I hit her in the left shoulder and it came out the right one. I think the angle was pretty shallow because I was only about 10 feet up, so her body is hiding the arrow. Or it may have passed thru already?
I am not a huge fan of technology but it is pretty cool to have my first bow kill recorded. I think I will make a little collage of photos with that one included and my busted arrow mounted below!
Ok..
I made the picture bigger for you.
It's easy to do.
You posted a thumbnail picture, which is fine.
After you select your picture from your PC or phone, just to the right of the little window where the picture name appears, click ( Insert Attachment 1 ). That will make the picture full size in your post.

Roy thanks for fixing my pictures, not sure why I have so much trouble with them!
This successful shot was all the sweeter, as the day before I pulled the trigger on a nice BW PL long bow I saw on RMS gear; as I was buying it I was thinking good job moron, you never even killed anything yet but you need another bow? :clapper:
Congrats Sir. Well done.
tom
it sounds like you have the same affliction all the rest of us have!! :biglaugh:
Tom,
you're on a roll...ride that wave...
you'll never regret it! :wavey:
congratulations!
Nice story. Great to see you wanted to see this thru with your bow even though rifle season allowed you an easier choice. Took 14 years for my first archery deer.
congrats
Great feeling, isn't it? I hunted with a bow during my "rifle tag" hunt.
Nice work. Good to see someone else sticking with the bow during general in MT. What unit? Still have a buck tag? Congrats
Congrats brother!
