This past Friday evening I was able to take my best recurve buck. I was hunting on my farm in Southern OKLAHOMA and was in a ground blind along an oat patch. It was a really great night to be outside and I was enjoying watching a big group of turkeys feed in the oats. I sat in the same spot on Thursday evening and saw a small buck chase two does around the field. That kind of chasing activity is very early for this area.
Unlike the previous evening, there was not much deer activity until later in the evening when 4 does stepped out into the field. As they fed, several other does appeared followed by a couple small bucks. Like the previous evening, the bucks started chasing the does and before long, it looked like there were deer running everywhere. Then, HE stepped out and I knew immediately that I would shoot him if given the chance. He was about 100 yards away when I first saw him and I was hoping he would head in my direction. I got very lucky in that he came my direction and passed by me at about 22 yards. That is further than I like to shoot at game, but to be honest, this was a bigger target than I normally shoot at :goldtooth: At the shot, I was very confident about the hit. He turned and ran hard and fast and very low to the ground. I watched where he went and then slipped out of the blind and went back to the house to give him some time.
I waited about 2 hours and then took a lantern and went to look for blood and my arrow. I looked for 1.5 hours in the oat field and found neither and started to get very worried that I didn't him him as good as I thought. I wanted to get a look at the arrow to get an idea about the hit before I started in the direction he ran. There is an ATV trail in the direction that he ran and I decided to walk down that trail to see if I could pick up the trail there. That was a good idea and I found him laying just inside the tree line in the trail. He only made it 100 yards total. I had double lunged him. I was using my 54# Rick Welch Dakota and gold tip arrows with a 145 grain, 1.5 inch schmeisser broadhead. Total arrow weight is 430 grains.

Terry, Roy, what are you suggesting?
I have been a loyal member here for a long time. I have many pictures of this buck from Friday night. I can send them all. I can give you the name of the taxidermist who I delivered the buck to on Saturday.
I have shared trail camera photos if this buck with my friend Barry Wensel who has been to my farm twice.
So please, elaborate on what you are suggesting.

It's the internet, for every congratulations you receive, you'll get the skeptics and those looking to downplay your accomplishment. I see nothing wrong, other than you weren't using an android phone lol.

Just weird shadows in the picture. I don't see anything wrong with it. Great deer!
Congrats on the nice buck.
Great buck, congratulations! I have seen that happen before with trail cam pictures. Gene Wensel sent me a trail cam photo last year of a deer with no head.
Great buck! Congratulations to you.
I'm not looking to down play anyone, I'm NOT in that business. That is a great buck like I said..... I DO however see some screwed up looking pics. They look weird and different length shadows, seams, and some things pixelated different than others. And agree, Iphones do take great pics, I don't have an iphone but I've seen enough of Guru's to know.
I took a pick of my antelope at dawn once and the sky was pixelated in a strip just below the dark sky where it started to turn orange....strange....never seen it again like that.
Again, I am NOT knocking anyone, or looking to downplay anyone. Looks like some one might be retaliating at me from another thread today. Someone that was downplaying someone or a method themselves? C'mon Man...Need to think about that.
Texas Trad.....
I wish you did have better pics, for you sake and your photo album. If you do have a really good pic of this buck somewhere, email it to me and I'll fix you up something with it.
:campfire:
Those look much better..
That one looks much better, ....email it to me in the largest size you have.
Thanks...

Some iPhones take great pics, and some do not! I have an iPhone 6 that will not take a pic worth using at nighttime with the flash. Daytime pics with the same phone are just fine. Sometimes at night, if there is enough light in a well lit area, I can get a nighttime pic to work, but most times I have to have someone else take pics on their phone, or drag out my regular camera.

The truth is the photos I posted are not great. I admit that. I am not a great photographer. It was 11:00 pm, I was by myself and I had to get that buck skinned, meat cooled and the cape ready for the taxidermist. It was dark outside and I had to use the timer and the flash.
Terry, you are the owner of this site and i would expect you of all people to follow the rules of the site which are to show respect to the other members. Calling the authenticity of my photos into question, as you did in your post before you erased it was not respectful. Same for you Roy and Friend.
Paul killed a beast with trad gear and we should all be building him up. Brother is a solid guy and I'm proud to call him a friend. Let's get his thread back on track fellas.
Outstanding!
Congratulations!!!!
That's a dandy with any weapon let alone traditional gear. Awesome! :clapper:
Paul, sorry about the confusion with your first few deer pictures.
Roy
Thank you Roy and thanks for sending the private message with the apology
He's a dandy! Congratulations!
Tex Trad....I did not question your pics, I just stated facts that you have...that the pics were screwed up. I didn't realize at first that your pics were at night.
I 'cleaned up' your thread to get it back on track so it would flow better and any 'questions or confusion' wouldn't linger. Sometimes I just can't win no matter what I do. Funny though, one guy accused me of doing the exact same thing he did only hours before.
Anyhow, that's a dandy buck sir. And truly sorry for anything I did to taint your thread...it was not my intention. My offer still stands....send me a good pic.
That's a dandy! Congrats!

Thanks
I've never met Paul, but we do have a mutual friend who has hunted on his place as a guest. From what I've been told this might not be the best deer on his property. Congrats to Paul for taking a fine deer with traditional gear.. Your patience and hard work has been rewarded.
Great deer, congrats

Thanks Terry. That looks a lot better.
Paul,
Where do I even begin? I suppose saying "I'm sorry" is a start.
I'm sorry.
Looking back, I can't believe that I inputted such a statement without considering its negative implications. It was both ignorant and disrespectful and I was far from acting as a genuine trad brother. Even if I explain my actions, it
still doesn't justify that I contributed to significantly detracting from your own great success. The fact that my actions offended you is most concerning.
I hope you can forgive me for what I did and put this matter behind us. I treasure the Trad Gang family, its friendships, camaraderie and the respect we strive for. I have fallen yet, will get up and begin again. And hopefully, what transpired can become one of those incidents that makes me a better individual.
I'm sorry.
Friend
Great buck, my man! It's tough to get good pics by yourself. I applaud you for taking care of the meat as a priority. It's becoming a rarity these days thanks to social media and insta famous hunters all over the web. Good job all the way around!

Terry. I like the second pic best. Will send address. Thanks!
Absolutely outstanding! What a beautiful buck. Congratulations!
Awesome Buck!!
Congrats!!
Texas Trad,
What a beast! How did that 430 grain arrow perform? Obviously well enough :biglaugh: I know you said you double lunged him, so did you get a pass through? Congrats on one heck of a deer!

I had complete penetration but not a pass through. The buck carried the arrow with him most of the way and I found it very close to where he dropped.
Regarding the arrow weight, I am shooting about 7.5 grains per pound which is certainly below the commonly quoted 10 grains per pound. My bow is 54 lbs at 28" but I draw 29.5" so the weight at my draw is 58 lbs or so. Rick makes his bows so that they shoot light arrows well and this bow is VERY quiet shooting these 430 grain arrows. These arrows are very fast out of this bow.
On the broadhead, I was surprised to find that I had a tiny bit of tip curl which is pretty shocking given how bombproof they look. I am not knocking the broadheads because I am still using them. On a positive front, the broadhead still shaved easily following the shot.
Sounds like some meat missiles! :archer2:
Terry, I received the package you sent today. I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the gift. Thank you.
I am currently having trouble getting my phone to upload pictures to Tradgang. When i get that figured out, I will show some pictures of what Terry sent. Basically, he took one of the night time selfies of my buck and cleaned it up and then had the photo enlarged and superimposed on a very nice 12" by 20" hardboard backing. He sent 3 copies!
Thanks again!
Cell phones take huge pictures.
They have a tendency to time out while uploading to tradgang.
Check the phones camera settings and choose a very low picture size.

Awesome, Paul..
Also sometimes cell phones gets an update, the update sometimes will reset your phone's camera to the larger file pictures again..
So be aware of that..
Congratulations on a great buck.👍👍
