Title: Ever have a bow?
Post by: bear mike on October 14, 2018, 08:54:28 PM
Ever have a bow you love to shoot and you shoot it very well but it seems to have a bit of bad juju in the woods?

Yes.  Between 1980 and 1982.  It had cams on the limb tips and five pins.

I would shoot out to 50 yards for nickels on apple size balloon targets against a neighbor and clean him out; but in the woods in was one error and mistake after another.  I never did kill a deer with it.  Sold it and haven't owned one since; or any arrow shaft but wood.  I have the recurve gene.

But trad bowhunting does require a proper mind set.  If you think you have bad juju it will be self-fulfilling.  A man's gots to have confidence in his equipment.  No room for doubts.

Give that bow to me for exorcism and get yourself another.

I had a Bill Stewart recurve that I could shoot lights out, unless it was at game. Nice bow 56" and just wonderful drawing bow. I missed 3 deer and one turkey
with the bow(in one week). The big tom turkey was at about 15 feet. I lost my confidence in the bow and sold or traded it after the turkey incident. Bought a different bow didn't have the problem. My mind just couldn't shake the experience. :banghead:

Yes, my LB in signature. I'm 0 for too many so far. I swear if I kill a deer with it, I'll hang it up forever. I did kill a turkey with it though.

Haven't had one yet , anyone can send me an evil bow and I'll do my best to tame it down and get some blood on it. All kidding aside I think the above statement about a particular bow getting in your head as a bad luck bow is true. If I don't have confidence in my gear it will never be right in my head...

Yes, I had a beautiful longbow by a maker I won't name, cause there was nothing wrong with the bow. One of the prettiest Hill-style bows I've ever had, and with dark green glass, my personal favorite. I could shoot it fine in the yard but missed so many deer with that bow it's ridiculous. Finally bought a replacement for it and sold that one to a buddy who was a recovering compound shooter, so maybe it worked better for him and made a convert to trad shooting.

I was fixing to type a response of my one, but Stumpkiller read my mind. Hunting with the "other" bow has left me disappointed and realizing I didn't need to practice so much at 60 yards to miss at 30...

Your bow is an extension of yourself.  If your bow has bad juju in the woods and not on the practice range I'd look to the operator.

I built a bow once from ebony and curly narra it was black and orange I called it my Halloween bow  . A witch must have put a curse on it I could never get a shot with that bow and when I finally did I missed . My friend Ronny kept admiring it, one day he shows up with a 40 # 1958 Kodiak takes my long bow and says here were trading and goes home . I never seen the bow again, great trade an old $200 bow for a new $750 one and what do I do with a 40# bow. And he went out and killed a deer with it !
