It's that time of year again. Our NY early bow season opens next week, finally after waiting all summer. Please post about how your season is going, and any pics would be great! Good luck to all the NY bowhunters, and please remember to be safe. Wear that safety harness when you're in a tree :archer2: :archer2: :archer2:
Hey ronp, if you get a chance to hunt the north country think of me. :campfire: One of the things I'll miss living in Georgia. I will find some hunting ground shortly. :archer:
A little later down here - but good luck to you guys (and gels).
I moved my main stand that was a chain on and pretty much grown into the tree. Swapped it for a ladder stand that's a little easier to get in and out of. Hope to do some still hunting as well.
Good luck guys :wavey:
wish i could say i am ready but i'm not, but still excited!
Saw a pair of bucks standing alongside my road this morning on the way to work just 1/2 mile from home. Three antlerless as well.
As far as I know one of the "big guys" the neighbors and I were watching made it through last fall. He should be a real bruiser this year.
That gets some of the cobwebs moving in the brain. Time to sharpen the broadheads!
yea good luck and be safe cannt wait to be sittin up in a tree thanks
After two seasons of not being able to shoot my recurve I'm more than ready for this season. :archer2:
Forces are conspiring against me to keep me out of the woods on the opener... but I will be in soon!
Dang! I was hoping to get over to the Moose River Plains in the Adirondack Mts. for the opener next Thursday, but it looks like I have to work. :banghead:
Oh well, I am sure lucky to have a job here in central NY! :archer2:
Did a bit of scouting yesterday. Saw a decent amount of deer and plenty of sign. I also practiced shooting from a stand the first time since last season. My shots were more accurate than I was expecting them to be. The opener is in 10 more days and I'm feeling confident.
Dealing with some health issues that may prevent me from getting out but everybody be safe...have fun and I wish much success to all!
Best of luck to you guys! Stay safe!
Was lucky enough to take a 8 point on the second day of the northern tier season. 12 yard shot 70 yard recovery. Good luck to everyone this season.
Rick
Congratulations Rick way to kick it off!!!!
congrats :clapper:
Good job Rick!
Congratulations.
Congrats Rick!
Good luck to all my fellow NY'ers. Sure hope the temps drop soon . It's gonna be 75 degrees opening day afternoon. Thankfully the morning will be a bit cooler.
Good luck to everyone.
I'll be missing opener for 1st time in 15+ years.
Shoulder is getting better every day but couldn't begin to pull 28#'s Friday.
Nice shot on that buck ! Hope you have a few doe tags after ending the season so soon ! The best time of the year is here again. Good luck to all.
Thanks guys, yes I still have two doe tags left and a regular season buck tag when that gets here. It's nice to get one down early but I never put too much pressure on myself I just enjoy being out there!
Well yesterday was uneventful, hunted morning and afternoon and closest encounter was something blowing in the thicket behind/down wind of me. Still beat work and glad to have gone. We'll try again Saturday.
Southern zone opener was quiet in my area-- still not too much movement or sign, heavy vegetation with the wet summer. Sat AM and PM and saw a trophy squirrel! More rain and warmer this week, then maybe a change for the better!
Only got out for a 1 1/2 hours last night but had a doe with fawn and button buck walk around under my stand for 5 mins before finally smelling me. Always fun to watch deer up close.Great to be out again... now if it would just quit raining I would get at it again.
With the exception of a red fox walking under my stand yesterday morning the opener was uneventful. Weather is way too warm and wet. Calling for more rain and warm temps this week.
Congrats Rick
Took an adult doe tonight with my Bob Lee
Congratulations James!
I hunted all day Saturday and didn't see any which puts me to a whopping 0 deer seen in two full days of hunting :help: hopping this coming weekend turn's things around.
Not seeing a lot of movement--too warm!
:clapper: Stone Knife doesn't ever use up much of his season filling his first tag when he's healthy. I've had does and fawns around me about every time out but I've only seen 1 buck so far and that didn't work out do to a branch I didn't think was in the way. I got my miss out of the way now...
Congrats Jim
Congrats James
Way to go James :clapper:
I'm with huntryx. Weather here in my neck of the woods has been crazy. If it's not too warm, it's raining. Tomorrow it's going up to 77 degrees and Thursday is thunderstorms in the afternoon. :banghead:
Nice buck Rick!
Great shooting Jim!
:bigsmyl:
congrats Jim way to get it done
Jim... sure would be nice to look at a picture??? :bigsmyl:
As soon as I master the new format :archer:
Too hot this am I didn't see a deer. Decided to clean up a couple of cards for my trail cam to put out later and this is what I found from last year. I had forgotten about this trail camera and it had caught the whole story of last years little buck. You never know whats going to show up on those cameras..even your own ! I hope I can get these pics to post with time stamps.[attachment=1][attachment=2][attachment=3][attachment=4][attachment=5]
That's pretty cool Marvin
Ok Marvin I'll ask... Was that you drivig the Cub Cadet? lol :knothead:
I don t drag deer when hunting near home. I was only a couple hundred yds from my house. The camera card was full of nothing pics so I hadnt gone through it which worked out because I never figured out how to post pics on the old version of this site anyway.
Pretty cool Marvin.
Finally figured out how to reduce the size of my picture.
[attachment=1,msg2824745]
Nice Jim! Well Marvin I'm glad it was you. I wasn't sure if it was the neighbor sneaking through your honey hole :)
Hey guys what weather app do you use for wind direction? I've been using weather bug but wouldn't mind something better... mostly for wind direction . Ty
AccuWeather
I find it to very true it'll say things like "rain in 25 min" and by golly it'll be right close to that.
Thank you Greg, Ill try it sir! :campfire:
Finally some daytime movement
[attachment=1]
The Ol Bob Lee is going to look nice laying on his chest...
I hope so
I saw seven last night and three so far today, waiting for me right :bigsmyl:
congrats Marvin
Well I lucky enough to be invited to a friends property yesterday where I saw 10 doe throughout the day. At last light I finally was provided an opportunity and wouldn't you know it I hit her right in the no go pocket bellow the spine. We tracked her for 300+ yards on a tiny drops of blood maybe every 6 feet. She finally pulled the arrow which had the wet watered down blood on half. After she pulled it we never found another drop :dunno: heart breaking when it happens for sure. Hopefully she'll be fine and nature will provide me another opportunity to right my wrong.
Still waiting for things to pick up here-- acorn crop here is a bust-- rotting on the ground from all the rain. Apples are spotty but mostly poor. A little corn still standing but most of it was cut weeks ago. The puzzle is always part of the fun!
Passed a nice doe last evening, hoping for a buck to come through but didn't happen.
I've been passing on does with fawns and yesterday 2 small bucks; a spike and a 3pt. A lone doe or bigger buck has to come along soon. When I got home last night a young buck stood at the back edge of my lawn and watched me get out of my truck before spooking while I was get out of my hunting clothes on my back deck.Light wasn't good but he looked like a small 6pt.
:campfire: Come on guys we need another picture up on our thread :archer2:

Shot this doe with my BigJim Mountain Monarch and a Centaur Battle Axe head
Congratulations Andrew great shot!!
Nice shooting Drew and beautiful photo sir!
Boy those battle axes leave a hole :)
Is that a pipe and tobacco pouch? looks really cool!
Good deal Drew......
Thanks Guys , yes the pipe was made for me by a friend and the tobacco was given to me from another friend.
Good job Andy.
Did you sprinkle a little tobacco on the deer and say a prayer of thanks? I used to do that when I carried tobacco. Now I shave a bit of chocolate candy bar. :archer:
well done drew!
I like that a lot! Special gear... :campfire:
beautiful doe-- congrats Drew--I'm sure there is a story to tell.......
Congrats again Drew on the two fine deer
Congrats Drew! Nice deer
Congrats Drew, nice shooting!
Thanks everyone , I did take another doe on opening day as well but didn't get a very good pic. I do say a prayer of thanks to the animal and the four winds , leaving some special tobacco behind.
Susan : I was hunting the swamp stand I moved into a big oak this year after a move last year that left me wanting to be a little more down the fence line. I have a camera there and had taken the card into the stand to check before daylight. I found all the pics where before 9:30 a.m. or in the evening so the plan was to hunt till 9:30. I heard some splashing coming from the end of the swamp and knew they where on the way and kept an eye out that way. I watched as the fog rolled in and a nice doe appeared from the fog followed by a smaller one then a medium doe and finally a small buck. Now I'm not one to let a chance slip by but though she was under ten yards and had no idea I was there for about five minutes turning and giving me many shots i just didn't feel it at that moment and let her walk away. Now I am busy watching skweeeerls and such thinking it's almost time to leave and here she comes running back in . I am caught off guard and the shock sent me right into shoot mode without a second thought . I waited until she was broad side @ ten yards and started to draw but she caught me but wasn't scared just looked up then went back to normal , it's now game on . I let her move left a little more and start to draw again and she catches me once more but isn't really spooked. Now she is within 10 yds so its close and the oak i'm in is huge so she can't really make out what that big skweeeerl is doing . I let her move left more and as her head goes behind a 6 inch tree I start my draw again very slow and see her looking around the tree at me but continue to draw as she takes a couple half steps back. She still has no idea what is going on and I make it to full draw as she is standing still slightly quartering away and I release and at the hit I knew she was all in , no question . The trail was short and easy to follow maybe 40 yds and then the work begins but I'm smilling the rest of the day. Thanks for listening. Drew
Congrats Drew, way go go !
 Way to go Drew.
Drew-- your story captures well the surprises deer present to us in the moments we hunt them -- fun! Makes me smile! :clapper:
Thanks again
Susan : That's what it is about , beating them at there game up close
...and being able to get a good laugh out of it when they win!
Had a couple close encounters today including giving a doe a nice shave this morning :knothead: :knothead:
I was finally able to get out on Thurs and two nice doe offered up a tempting shot. I picked the bigger doe and the shot looked perfect. However, when I got the arrow it had almost no blood on it and smelled like gut. I backed out and went back in the AM. There was virtually zero blood, but I knew the woods and after a random search, I found her after about 80 yards. The cavity was full of blood. Looks like liver and lung. She will be fantastic table fare. You can see the exit hole in the photo. The entry was a bit higher. Deer are tough!
Congrats Terry.
It was WINDY hereabouts today. 20 mph with gusts. I stuck it out hoping it would calm down around sunset. No luck. I didn't see nuttin.
Congratulations terry
Congrats Terry :clapper:
Congrats Terry, was just wondering how you were making out.
congrats Terry
Not much movement in the woods hereabouts, though some scrapes are starting to appear. Deer seem to be in the fields (cut corn and/or grass) at sundown.
Not a monster but a solid deer. I was able to get him on 10/14/18 during night watch on state land out of a natural ground blind. I had my 49#Dryad, Beman bow hunter shafts with 125 gr heads. 23 yard shot with a 36 yard recovery. So all and all a great day.
Congrats Jerry
Congrats Jerry !
better than anything i've seen lately...congrats
congrats Jerry
Congratulations Jerry
I'm curious if anyone here remembers Rusty Boos.
Rusty passed away about three years ago now. He lived in Farmington, which is between Victor and Canandaigua.
I just got to thinking of him because he was such a fanatic for Brackenbury bows; he was so excited I'd found a used Left handed Brack on the internet that he gave me an original Brack quiver, which I covered in wool from an old beat up shirt.
I'd love to be swapping lies with him this evening.
Congratulations Jerry & Terry :campfire:
I did something i have not done before. I gave myself a birthday deer and it only took 47 years lol

I was hunting in a neat little spot. I sit behing this rock wall that I modified to be tall enough that sitting i can just see over, only my head showing. When the deer come I slowly duck below the wall and get low on my knees , bow extended out in front of me, bow end on the ground and wait. I cant see them till they pass a lower spot in the wall where i have a window like opening of low wall to shoot over out to 25 yards. With the wind in the right direction this spot is fun to sit. Well yesterday was my birthday and the wind was perfect for this spot.
I slipped in early and only had to wait till 9:15 for 3 does to feed into view. they were making their way off to a thick bedding area. As they came down the trail I watched as the came closer one was larger and two younger. The bigger doe was out in the lead and when they we closer I ducked behind the wall and into position on my knees. I had a brief but suspenceful wait and as the lead doe came into view she was 20 yards out. I slowly came to full draw, let her clear a tree and softly mouth grunted.
As she stopped and looked towards me I settled infor that fraction of a seckond and released the arrow... The spiraling chartreuse fletching... the graceful arc of the arrow on rout to a deer... the excitment, tension and relief as the arrow flashes and passes through for a clean kill. I rest the bow tip to the ground and wait still soaking it all in as the other two deer come down the same trail looking through the woods for the disturance. Its then I realize the 3 deer changed order while out of sight and I shot one of the younger deer in all my excitment.
I hear a solid thud as the doe drops out of sight 40 yards away... Thunder off in the distance, steel grey sky, cool damp dark earth under my knees... the sounds smells and feels of fall. To wish for it is almost to wish it away as it seems so brief. I try my best to soak it up, take it in, ts simply never enough. Sitting back on my feet I rest my bow down in the colored leaves and lean over to my pack pulling out a crispy fall apple, life is good as I wait.

Congrats to all who have harvested an animal and have been enjoying the outdoors!
Well done socks......... :notworthy:
Congrats James. Happy birthday
Happy birthday and congratulations James
well done James , congrats
Thanks guys :bigsmyl:
hey I wanted to tell you Knawbone ... David from Corning NY wanted me to say hi and good hunting to you boys. He plans on contributing a photo again this year :bigsmyl:
:campfire:
Congrats and happy birthday!
I'm older! My birthday was three weeks ago.
Just saw your doe Drew, very nice and yours Jim you both are great story tellers I love it. Now we need some dead bucks. I'm going to be able to hunt tomorrow evening any wait.
Congratulations to all that have been successful. Nice shooting guys.
I should have had a buck to show you Ger . I was seconds from releasing on a big 8pt yesterday when my phone went off ! I always turn it off before I leave the house but somehow I didn't yesterday. I watched the 8pt with his little 6pt buddy slowly, I mean very slowly ,feed down a ridge towards me for almost an hour. The big guy was at 25yds walking to me angling broadside ,6pt was already past me, I was standing with the bow pointing at him just waiting for a couple more steps to draw, release ! Phone with its screaming eagle sound and music goes off .Not my wife's fault. What are the odds ? I needed a couple seconds at most. It was my second encounter with a bigger buck this year that has failed ; I wonder how many more I'll need .Yikes. :dunno:I did fill a doe tag from the ground on my way in to my stand last Thursday and its been awhile since I got one that way. I'm just cursed when it come to the big guys. Good luck and make sure to turn off the stinking phone.
I know that feeling Marvin :knothead: congrats on the doe though
Congrats Sockrblur! What a great birthday present!
Congrats to all who have been successful and to all who have been able to enjoy the woods.
Sorry about your luck Marv, you'll get one
Ugh... sorry Marv. Gerald is right , this is our week coming up. We need more bucks :campfire:
Congratulations Jim on a great harvest, congratulations to all the other successful hunters. Marvin we all know you can shoot so it was a lucky break for that buck. Hopefully you will have another encounter with a positive outcome.
Boy did we get soaked this morning!!! No sightings, saw a few yesterday but nothing close enough, hoping they have to move this afternoon  :help: :dunno:
Hunters moon is waning so daytime buck activity is going to take off starting next week. It's one of the few old time hunter sayings that I absolutely believe and have observed to be true. Not the crazy rut yet just more movement. Best time to hunt is whenever you can.. but watch next week and see what happens. I will be living in a tree !
I hope you are right Swamp! :archer2: Im in the mood!

Beautiful fox James! Congrats

Dang that's a biggin congratulations!!
Well my brother finally took his first whitetail with a traditional bow...
[attachment=1]
Perfect quartering away shot, entered just behind last rib came up through both lungs and you're looking at the exit
Shot was 8ish yards
Now if I can only find away to keep him from going back to the training wheels :nono:
Great shot on that buck Kopper, tell him congrats from all us NY Trad men.
Tell your brother congratulations Kopper :campfire:
Congratulations everyone!
Good to see some people connecting. I finally saw some movement on sunday. Had a bunch of doe in front of me with a small spike horn. A second buck came in and started running the does around. Never got a good look at the second buck but things are starting to ramp up. These next couple of weeks will be good. Good luck out there.
Kopper - Can't get over that mountain man!!! Where'd you find him? Hahah... Congrats to Ben!!!!! See what happens when we all the geezers get together for Sunday morning Bloody Mary's. The youngen's get the bucks!!!
Congrats to Ben
Thanks everyone I'll pass it on
Bob seems you need to still add you picture :saywhat:
congrats :clapper:
Still waiting for some decent action-- windy and wet mostly.....
Three of the last 4 times out (morning/eve and morning/ eve) I've seen good bucks but just couldn't get a shot. I had one come in ,big 8pt , about 2 minutes after I broke a branch so I could climb higher . I was facing the wrong way and by the time I got turned he was in the thicker stuff. I think he was checking out the noise. If I had been ready and seen him coming I would have had a 12yd shot.I pulled a camera card this morning and had a bunch of activity . I want to see this one...[attachment=1]
I love October... Its probably my favorite but come on sweet November :deadhorse: :help: :deadhorse:
Saw a nice one nose to the ground and focused! Ran right by as I was walking my dogs (of course I wasn't in the right place at the right time with a bow.....)
I think I have a better chance of seeing a catfish from my stand than a whitetail buck.
A week ago our Airedale was in the front yard jumping back from something on the ground. I checked it out and he had a crayfish successfully defending itself. We are at 1,800 feet and five miles from a river! I have seen a second one since then in the grass and a third one dead on the road.
I think the deer all drowned. Haven't seen hide nor hair in the woods. Rain, rain, rain.
Stumpkiller-- I hear you-- weather is really windy and just plain wet here, and next week calls for the same. Try to be out every minute I can, but I draw the line at thunderstorms in a tree! :scared:
I had to work until 6:30PM tonight and coming home I had to stop three times on my stretch of road for deer crossing the road. One would have been a 10 point but one side was broken off; but even missing half of one side he was splendid. Stood in the headlights and let me gawk for some time. He was 5 miles from my house/hunting area. They were moving tonight.
Because I had to be at work. :banghead:
What an outstanding weekend!!!
Saturday: I put my father in the hottest stand we have on a property I joined last year. I got the text at 7:30 he had hit a buck!
My dad had been trying for roughly three years to get his first trad bow kill. Up until April he had been shooting a old bear recurve he had gotten when he was 16. In April I built him a longbow and he has been dedicated to her.
We me being the awful son I am I made him wait an hour and a half before letting him track. His arrow entrance was high but perfect center of rib cage. The arrow never exited instead broke off and punched holes in everything as he ran. The blood trail was virtually non existent with the high entrance and rain but boy did that string tracker work beautifully he only went about 120yrds before piling up. I was so excited for him but also bumming a little as I had blown some opportunities early in the season and we (myself, brother and father) have never tripled during bow season let alone with trad gear. Plus I wast seeing much.
Sunday:
This morning it all came together for me! I had been looking around when I spotted a big six who had snuck in on me. He stopped at about 15yards and began to make a scrape something I've never got to witness! After a couple minutes he began his journey again and as he walked under some limbs I found my anchor. I was in the process of pulling through my shot waiting for my clicker and he was cruising through my lane quicker than anticipated as his shoulder started to disappear behind a tree there was a click and the shot was off. The arrow looked great and he took off. As he disappeared over a ridge the string tracker took off on his down hill run then stopped. I started fist pumping in the stand then the string started out again this time way faster!! My heart sank as it seem to never stop! Finally it came to a stop and never moved again...did it break? Is he dead, did he bed? Was the shot to far back?...I gave myself an hour and a half and was pretty worried. It was definitely a dead deer some time so I decided I'd check the sign and determine my next move. The first 40 yards revealed very little blood but no sign of guts as I got to the ridge he went down I caught my first good blood I could see easily the mess he made push down the hill so I decided to push on a little further at the bottom of the hill I found my arrow lodged in a pine tree, now he was taking double line :bigsmyl: I looked up and could see blood and his trail pretty clear 15 yards ahead I started feelinmuch better! I kept tracking and the blood only got better and soon I came upon him. I had double lunged him square on one bottom of the other and he still went roughly 160+yards.
So this year is the first year we have all killed with a bow, let alone all killed bucks! Not only that but my brother and father got their first trad kills.
I'd love to post pictures but it keeps telling me they're to big and I don't know how to size them down. Best of luck guys I think it's just starting to get going!

Good work all around! Great that everyone could share in the hunt and success. :clapper:
Yes congrats. Weather here (Southern Tier) has undone me this year, and another warm, windy and wet week ahead. Least sightings I have had in years........will keep at it, though. 2 more weeks until the guns start, crossguns started last Saturday.....
Nice shooting Kopper and father. Tough bucks to go that far with those shots. The weather hasn't been helping but I let a very small 5pt walk by yesterday and that was all my wife and I saw all day. Time is winding down and I won't let many more smaller bucks get a pass. I'm waiting on the rain this am but will head out later. Good luck to all. Anybody seeing any chasing ?
Congrats Kopper, Kopper dad, and Kopper brother. Awesome!!
Congrats Kopper to both of you!
congrats boys  :clapper:
Congratulations guys :archer:
Congrats kipper to you and dad
Spent most of yesterday in a tree and saw three bucks cruising . Only a little spike came within my 30yd circle and I let him pass. They're moving , its gonna be cold sitting now ,but they will really show up if this snow that's coming down now sticks.
Snowing pretty good now going back out after lunch. Saw two does this morning had a shot at one from the ground had a deflection, I'm in a thorn apple thicket so tough shooting.
Still waiting to see some consistent movement in my area......high winds today
Finally starting to see some movement here. Winds gusting here to 40mph. Next week should be slot better weather wise, cool temps less wind.
Ground blind fail.
My wife went out for the first time this year, so I took her to a spot a little different and got her set up. I moved down the hill for a location but happened upon a dynamite trail with thick goldenrod to the south side. So, I cut two shooting lanes, and a whole in the center and made a home.
Saw three. The last, 8 point, game me a shot (I think). I saw the antler tips coming along the top of the goldenrod, and came to full draw. He came to a stop at the shooting lane, and I released. Super!! (not really). Just as nice as you please, he ducked that arrow and then went about his day!!
I believe this ground blind had two problems. 1) the worst, my shooting lane was perpendicular to the trail. If it were at an angle, I would have had a quarter away shot and he wouldn't have been alert (2) when I cut the goldenrod, I should have cut higher, and I should have replaced the removed material with brush that was lower.
Anyway, there's still plenty of goldenrod to build a successful blind. Twenty minute idea to completion almost netted a nice buck.
Dang bob sorry but I believe your first fail was you're to dang y'all to be hiding in goldenrod  glad you got to share it with Linda, Better luck next time buddy....still waiting for you to post your doe :campfire:
Lucky afternoon, got a 6pt. using Waldrop Pac Seat & my new Galaxy Ember longbow. :goldtooth:
Congratulations Terry!!
But ya know what they say....."no pictures, it didn't happen"
I guess I'm too old & dumb to know how to post pics. I've tried but I'm puter' illiterate. :dunno:
Finally saw my first buck this morning, a 5 point that I figure was 18 months old. He was a good looking deer. He was 10-15 yds away. I would have had an excellent shot on him, his nose was to ground and no clue I was there. I have only gotten maybe 5-6 deer with trad equipment. I am 71 and been at it a long time. I consider any legal deer with trad gear a trophy... sooo why did I elect to not shoot? I just watched after I picked my spot. I suspect that killing isn't as important as it used to be.... I hope I get over this soon...
Good job to all successful, and and I hope good times for all the rest of us.
I think this is the first year EVER I did not see a deer while bowhunting. Zip and nada.
My game camera shows them well after dark, so I just chose the wrong area to sit. Oh well. That's why it's called "hunting".
Congratulations Terry
[attachment=1]
There you go Terry. Congratulations
Thanks Ken! :notworthy:
Congrats Terry.
So It DID happen :biglaugh:
Congrats again terry great shot
congrats Terry
Good job Ken!
Good for you Terry. How do you like the seat Thanks Dan
Sticker shock at first, but like the old saying "ya get what ya pay for" I haven't seen a seat more comfortable & with the different options for setup(seat angle-free standing or leaning against a tree. Also pivots with you as you lean forward to shoot) I haven't found any area that I couldn't use it. Easy to carry-like a backpack & light weight. (You can easily shoot even while wearing it if you need to)
Nice work
It seems like you guys have been seeing numerous deer and even taking a few. Congratulations.
