I was shocked at how dull the old deadhead had gotten after just 13 days of taking it in and out of the quiver and maybe hitting agains brush or something a few times.
When ever they don't feel sharp.
I tend to hone mine even if they are already sharp. Never let it get dull as it is said.
Terry that's what we should do check them often. I wonder how many like me are walking around with dull arrows in their quiver. I'm not new at this I should know better.
As needed. I figure if I'm sittin around in a tree and not doing anything else why not thumb the edge of my broadhead and see how it is.
Mainly it's the number one arrow that is taken in and out of the quiver and is the one that's prone to edge wear.
I won't put a dirty broadhead back in the quiver or a Judo for that matter. The dirt and grit that is left behind don't do the edge any favors.
usually check and re-hone everything in the quiver before I head out, also keep a Fallkniven DC3 Diamond/Ceramic stone in my pocket to tweak bh's out in the woods or on stand if necessary. Ceramic is generally enough to dust off the edge back to shaving sharp and the diamond side can be used to bring minor blade damage back to life and finish on the ceramic. Takes some practice, but I quit carrying my bh file after using the dc3.
I keep all my broadheads covered while in the quiver. That way, they don't bounce around and bang against each other. After hunting, I check them, and if they don't feel sharp, I touch them up.
I place all razor sharp arrows in my quiver cock feather out, then after a hunt I place it back cock feather in and next hunt gets the next arrow in line. When all arrows are cock feather in (5 hunts) I touch em up. Don't really now how I came up with this goofy system but I got a streak going and I'm not messing with my mojo switching things up.

I carry a little portable 3-sided jewel stick in my pack. I probably touch up each side of my Woodsman on my primary arrow with the fine file every other sit while in stand. The rest in my quiver will get touched up every other week or so. If I don't keep removing them and putting them back in the quiver, they stay hunt sharp for quite a while.
During the rut, I hunt every day straight for about 18-20 days. I touch up my heads every two days or so.
I touch up #1 & #2 arrows before every hunt. Most times these are the only two arrows that ever get used. Going out without touching up would be very unusual for me - can't remember ever going out without a touch up. And generally all my broadheads are killing sharp all the time. I work my sharks with the croc sticks - super sharp. Journeymans I have my own mounted files and I hit the sides of the blades as a touch up - just a few strokes.

when I got my first bow quiver I was surprised how much stuffing them in and out of foam would take away from that hair popping edge. I hone my first 2 arrows before each hunt.
I touch them up constantly, so they never really get dull. My favorite treestand pastime is sharpening and re-sharpening already sharp broadheads :biglaugh:
How do y'all sharpen heads on stand without getting busted? Where I hunt the deer look up. Just this morning 18 foot up a tree with cover behind me, I decided to stand up and stretch my legs. Looking around real slowly and not seeing anything so I stood up slowly. Bam busted I never did see it but it saw me.

Not a heckuva lot of motion slowly running a file over a broadhead edge. Also...90% of my treestands are in thick pines. I could do a disco dance in those branches and not get busted.
Everything I do in a stand is at molasses speed, while keeping my head on a slow swivel. To my knowledge, sharpening a broadhead has never caused me to spook a deer.
I do see guys running climbers up naked trees, with no cover at all. I'm sure they could spook a deer with an eye blink.
I touch up the edges about once per week using a leather strop with stropping compound.
